It is as simple asthat. You can come from any Christiandenomination and any part of the world.“Our first intake have been here for threeand a half months and it’s been anextraordinary journey. It’s been beautiful,it’s been challenging, it has been of Godand I am deeply humbled, very excited forwhat the rest of this year will hold for thecurrent members.”Shannon Preston, a residential memberfrom Minnesota, USA, said: “Having twohours a day to pray is unreal and I’m notsure where I would get that outside of thisyear. I show up and trust that God is thereas well. It’s such a gift.”You can find out more about TheCommunity of St Anselm by visitingwww.stanselm.org.ukPage 4JANUARY 2016

FIRST STEPS9TH DECEMBER 2015CHRISTMASMy goodness, it’s that time again. Christmas isalmost upon us and our naughty little sheepand his friends are getting more and moreexcited as the days go by. It is a lovely blueskied afternoon for our walk up to church forour First Steps service. We’re going to tell theChristmas story and our naughty little sheeptells me that it really is his very favourite storyand he never gets tired of hearing it. Andneither do I! Into church and our naughty littlesheep and his friends makes themselves comfortable, ready for everyone to come and joinus. Our naughty little sheep is so pleasedbecause Linda has knitted him his very ownSanta Claus hat and the glittery dragon has gota very smart red and white scarf. They bothstand so proudly on our little altar, knowinghow very festive they look!First in today is Barbara with granddaughterCecily. How lovely to see them again. Gradually the church fills up with Mums, Grandmas, children and babies. It is new baby Abigail’sfirst visit to us. She is only a few weeks old anda real sweetie! When everybody is sitting comfortably we begin our service. Some of ourbigger children help me to tell the ChristmasStory by bringing up the different characters aswe go along. First come Mary, and Joseph anda very tired donkey. They’ve had a long andtiring journey and a very difficult time findingsomewhere to stay. And to make mattersworse Mary has got a baby in her tummy andit’s decided that it is time to come out! PoorMary! They have had to shelter in an old stableand when baby Jesus does arrive Mary has towrap him in cloth that she has brought with herand lay him in a manger that is full of straw forthe animals to eat! Our naughty little sheepChrist Church Milton-Next-Gravesendtells me that it always comes as a bit of a shockto him, each time he hears that. Baby Jesus, wrapped in white linen and lying in a manger isbrought up to our altar. Then an angel appears to shepherds on thecold dark hillside. That must have been a bit ofa shock! She tells them about the wonderfulbirth of Jesus and urges them to make theirway to the stable to see for themselves. It willchange their lives! The angel, a shepherd andtwo sheep arrive on our altar. Then it’s the turnof the wise men. They, too, have had a longand difficult journey, following a beautiful star. They knew that it meant that a special king hasbeen born, not in a palace but in a lowly stable.Who would have believed that God, the creatorof everything, would come to earth to be bornin a stable? So last but not least three kingsjoin the little group on our altar. The childrenhave been very good and helpful. We havesung some of our favourite songs, “Away in amanger”, “ Little Jesus sweetly sleep”, “ Jinglebells” and “ Twinkle, twinkle little star” The bellshave been jingled beautifully, then everybodyis really quiet for our prayers. So many thingsfor which to thank God, not least for His loveshown to us in the coming of Jesus. Then it’s time to go into the hall for mince piesand shortbread biscuits, yum! Our naughty littlesheep is keen to show off his new Santa hatand the glittery dragon wants everyone to seehis new scarf. They are bothso happy and proud, thanksto Linda and her skill! As wewatch everyone having agood time together, theyand I want to wish everyonea very happy Christmas andNew Year. We look forwardto seeing everyone again onthe 13th January, when it won’tbe quite such a New Year!God Bless,Rosemary AustinPage 5JANUARY 2016
