Why Oscar? An OSCAR is an Orbiting Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio Built for non-commercial purposes Originally built by Project OSCAR members in garages in SiliconValleyNow built by and/or funded by members of AMSAT and AMSATaffiliatesOriginally a “bleep sat” but now carry sophisticated repeaters ortransponders Are encouraged to carry sensors and other scientific experiments AMSAT-OSCAR designations granted after launch

A bit of History Sputnik 1 was theworld's first Earthorbiting artificialsatellite. Launchedby the SovietUnion on October4, 1957.

From small beginnings OSCAR-I , which had abattery powered 140mwtransmitter operating in the2 meter band.Transmitted it’s message of“HI” for three weeks andre-entered the atmosphereon January 31, 1962 aftermaking 312 orbits.

To the very ambitious OSCAR-40, a High EarthOrbit satellite with anapogee of 60,000 KM.A set of lineartransponders, transmitting andreceiving on selectedfrequencies.Data modes still in usetoday.Experiments includedGPS for orbitdetermination.

How Many Now?Info from http://www.amsat.org/status/

Some important terms

Satellite Orbit Tracks

Low Earth Orbit (LEO) LEOs are satellites that are orbiting theearth from 400 to 2000 KM altitudePass times range from 12 to 22 minutesLinear transponder (SSB/CW) or FMrepeaterTypically operate in the 2m / 70cmbandsPolar / high inclination orbitSO - 50

Inclined Orbit

Satellite Coverage

GEOIn conjunction with AMSATDL, Qatar’s Es’hail 2 satellitewill provide the first amateurradio geostationarycommunications that couldlink amateurs from Brazil toThailand. The satellite isexpected to launch in the 3rdquarter of 2017 and will bepositioned at 25.5 degreesEast.AMSAT-UK Link
