A LETTER from OUR CHAIRMAN & PRE SIDENTWe are pleased to share the highlights of 2013, anothersuccessful year for the Wisconsin Center District (WCD).Between our three amazing venues – the WisconsinCenter, U.S. Cellular Arena and Milwaukee Theatre –we delighted audiences with numerous events, fromBroadway shows to bone-crushing roller derby bouts tonational business conventions. We’re proud to operateMilwaukee’s premiere entertainment complex andthankful for the opportunity to make fans of such adiverse audience, comprised of both local residentsand out-of-town visitors. In 2013, WCD operated under a balanced budget andproved to be a boon to the city and county, helpingto generate visitor spending on Milwaukee-area hotelrooms, meals and entertainment. We also helpedstimulate community pride and economic developmentin downtown Milwaukee and neighboring communities.Even more impressive, WCD operations are fully fundedby our own operating revenues. Special sale taxes onhotel rooms, car rentals and prepared food anddrinks sold in restaurants and taverns repay our bondissues, help fund Visit Milwaukee, and pay for capitalimprovements. We receive no property tax money orfederal, state or local subsidies. Of course, our goal is todo more than simply breakeven. So we were pleased atthe findings of a recent economic impact study, whichshowed that WCD generated nearly half a billion dollarsfor the local economy. We’re eager to move forward withthe Phase III expansion, which will add 100,000 squarefeet to the existing convention center. It will no doubtprompt more people to consider Milwaukee as theirnext convention destination.Looking back on 2013, we have many successes tocelebrate; a sold-out performance from the legendaryLeonard Cohen at the Milwaukee Theatre; a chance toshow off our facilities to industry peers at the U.S. Institutefor Theatre Technology Annual Conference & StageExpo and the return of UWM Men’s Basketball to theU.S. Cellular Arena. The team is coming off an impressiveyear after earning an NCAA tournament berth andcapturing the Horizon League title, so we wish themall the best on a promising season ahead! After nearly 18 years with Wisconsin Center District,President and CEO Richard Geyer retired in April 2014.Under his leadership, the WCD has flourished and heleaves a legacy of happy employees who feel morelike family. We recognize that the success of the WCDis due to the collective hard work of each and everymember of the WCD team and are proud to employnearly 300 people in both full- and part-time positions.Richard would like to extend his gratitude to the 40 board members with whom he’s had the pleasure ofworking during his WCD career. He continues to workwith us in a consultant role following his retirement. The Wisconsin Center District’s relationship with U.S.Cellular is coming to an end following the 2013 season. We’d like to thank them for their many years of supportand their continued dedication to the city of Milwaukee.A special thanks also goes out to Visit Milwaukee, who works tirelessly to secure major convention andtrade show bookings that supplement our own sports, entertainment and business events. We’d also like toacknowledge Levy Restaurants, our exclusive foodand beverage partner, and Universal Audio VideoProductions for providing a world-class experiencefor each of our guests. In closing, we’d like to thank the people who live, workand visit our fair city.
