The truth of the matter is it is great advice for gettingalong in life (unless your dream isto be a hermit). In particular, it is excellent advice ifyou hope to thrive at Electric Supply and if you are committed tomaking our business the best company in the world to our people, our customers and our suppliers. The goodnews is that showing how muchyou care is the accumulation ofnumerous simple, almost effortlessrepetitive acts.Such as, when seeing team mateseach day, we should greet themwith a smile and “Good morning”.This simple but powerful courtesyis a great daily start. When encountering a team mateyou have not met, do you stop andintroduce yourself? Saying“Welcome to Electric Supply” and“Nice to meet you” will help a newteam mate feel more at home andit also makes your first impressiona positive one. If by chance theperson you meet turns out to be acustomer or a supplier, your gesture will speak volumes regardingthe quality of our workplace. All of us experience major negativelife changing events on the level ofsignificant illnesses, loss of a lovedone, or dire financial challenges.Do you show empathy to teammates who are going through adevastating challenge? Somethingas simple as a sincere “I’m sorry”can go surprisingly far in liftingone’s spirits. When a team mate is facing a significant challenge, being available tolisten can move someone towards abetter emotional place. If a team mate expresses a need totalk or vent about an issue, even asmall issue, are you going to bethere to listen? Personally, there aretimes that my challenges initiallyseem huge but if I talk through theissue with a confidant, solutionsappear or, at the very least, my challenge seems smaller. All it takes is arespectful listener.Speaking of respect, does your behavior reflect being respectful to allteam mates? While quirky habits ofothers can easily get under our skin, being aware that all of us have ourown annoying moments shouldserve to keep us grounded andmore accepting of others.Being respectful includes not gossiping. Even if the gossip is factual, only repeat it if you are certainsomeone else has a legitimate“need to know.”If a team mate receives a promotion you hoped to receive, can youswallow your pride and congratulate him or her? While these and the many otherlittle things that each of us can domight seem inconsequential, it isthe accumulation of hundreds oflittle positive and repetitive gestures that strengthens our culturewhich is the foundation for amore sustainable future. If wetake these positive, small steps, another outcome for most of uswill be feeling better about ourselves which strengthens our outlook, discipline and well-being.Please allow me to share an example: When I went on active dutyin in the US Navy in 1969, I wasundisciplined, homesick, miserable, and hoping my two-year stintwould fly by. My shipmates and Iwere living in cramped quarters;enlisted bunks stacked three highwith zero privacy. Clarification:Life was actually pretty damngood but I was too immature toappreciate it. By luck, I stumbledupon an idea that might make mydays pass quicker. I decided to tryto go out of my way to be extrafriendly to every sailor I encountered on the ship. This was diffiContinued on page 2.

March of 1971 arrivedsooner than expected and I wasdischarged from the ship. In myseparation papers, I was surprised to read that my divisionofficer commented that I displayed “unassuming leadership.”Not being senior in rank andbeing far from the most skilled atworking on our radar systems, this compliment shocked andconfused me. When I asked, Iwas told that I had earned therespect of the sailors and hadunassumingly become a leader asa result of my behavior. I amconvinced that being nice builtfriendships, improved my outlook and helped me mature.Have I been able to consistentlymaintain a friendly attitude? No,but it is something I should striveto do every day. For all of youwho have helped me be a nicerperson, thank you!together to see that our ESOPwill be a valuable asset. Certainly, building value and maintaining sustainability requiresmuch more than showing otherteam mates that you care. However, showing that you care byproactively being nice is simple, easy and most importantly, it’sthe right thing for us to do.You’re the best!As my shipmates and I were in ittogether, so are we as ElectricSupply team mates because wemust try to succeed in a rapidlychanging, challenging and competitive world. The Supply LinePage 4ESOP Update“I’m not retiring, why doesESOP matter?”Ok, it’s true that technicallyspeaking your company’s ESOPis a retirement benefit, but youare probably enjoying advantagesfrom ESOP ownership today.Decades before you see any financial distribution from theplan, you can gain these benefitsfrom being part of an ESOP.Stable company ownership isgood for all employees. Oftenan ESOP is part of a long-termsolution for ownership succession. Planning for future ownership is good for the selling shareholder and it is good for currentemployees too. Sale to an outsidebuyer or a competitor almostalways changes the character andcomposition of a company goingforward. It can bring painfulchanges in direction and elimi-nate jobs. Conversely, when aselling owner transfers ownership to an ESOP, it enables thecompany to continue to moveforward with its plans for thefuture without missing a beat.Someone else pays for some ofyour long-term savings. Are youdoing well saving for the futureon your own? If you are likemost people, you are not savingmuch. The good thing about anESOP is your employer is helping you out with your savings. The ESOP is an additionalwealth-building opportunity thatyour average employee in the USdoes not enjoy. Nearly half of allemployers do not provide anycompany-paid retirement and52% of Americans have no personal savings for retirement.Eventually those who are notsaving will need to catch up –Profound Reflections-Steve JobsStrike out on your own. Try new things. Take somerisks. This is exactly what Steve Jobs and Apple did tobecome so successful. They broke the mold when theycame out with the IMac, IPod, IPhone, and IPad.Instead of following others they did their own thingand it obviously paid big dividends for them. Theircompetitors have been playing catchup for years.Quality Quote“When you are kind to others, it not only changesyou, it changes the world.”- Harold KushnerWork with people who have avested interest in your success.Your co-workers have one morereason to care: they have a stakein growing value in the ESOP.Engaged employees in an ESOPdo the things right for the business, go the extra mile for customers, and help their coworkers. If they fully understandhow the company builds value, your co-workers will want you tosucceed. This ownership mentality can create a positive differencein the work environment –which is an advantage that youcan feel today and in the years tocome.Just Married!with Shaker Brock“Why join the Navy if you can become a pirate?”and that’s going to limit their lifechoices in the future. YourESOP can provide added freedom and flexibility that manyother people do not have.Congratulations toChristianand TrinaWilliers, theywere marriedon April27th!
