TECH NotesFlorence-Darlington Technical CollegeWinter 2016V. 2 no. 4Florence, South CarolinaAutomotive and HVAC Technology CenterNears Completion As The New Year ArrivesThe new Automotive and HVACTechnology Center located between the 600 Building and theSoutheastern Institute of Manufacturing and Technology (SiMT) is nearingits completion.The roughly 37,000 square-foot building is taking shape as constructioncrews work feverishly to finish thebuilding by early 2017. It will serve asthe home for the gasoline and dieselautomotive programs, as well as forthe college’s HVAC Program.The current Automotive Program isloacted in the 600 Building, whileHVAC is housed in the 200 Building.With the two programs being in suchhigh demand, Florence-DarlingtonTechnical College is constructing thenew building so that each programcan expand and serve more students.The new Automotive and HVAC Technology Center is just one step in the 55 million Academic Master Plan.In May of 2016, the land began to becleared, and by June of 2016, construction was underway“The first building of the ten-year Academic Master Plan is the Automotiveand HVAC Technology Center,” saidFDTC President Dr. Ben Dillard. “Wedecided to contruct this facility firstdue to the high demand for classes.With the exception of the SiMT, theAutomotive and HVAC TechnologyCenter marks the first construction ofa building on campus in more than 30years.”As you walk through the eight-footdoors of the new building, you willwalk down a single hallway that hasoffices and classrooms on each side.Automotive will be located on the leftside of the building, while HVAC willbe on the right.The extra space inside the classroomsnot only allows extra room for stu-dents to get hands-on experience butalso allows for more necessary equipment for the programs to be added aswell.

FeaturingMessage fromthe PresidentAs 2016 came toa close with themany festivitiesassociated with the holiday season,it was a natural thought process toreflect upon the many blessings thathave been bestowed upon FDTC andits employees.We are all privileged to have the opportunity to work at a place that playssuch a prominent role in workforceand economic development in the PeeDee region of the state. Our studentsdepend upon us to help them preparefor exciting jobs or to continue theireducation at a senior institution.FDTC enrollment continued its upwardtrajectory in the fall of 2016, toppingout above 6,000 students and exceeding the number from the previousyear. We have been extremely luckyto maintain our enrollments when thenational trend has seen a decline inenrollments for community and technical colleges. Proceeds from the eventwent to the FDTC Educational Foundation to help with student scholarships.The Grill Master Challenge featuredfour competitors who prepared platesin a head-to-head battle for a grandprize of 1,500. In the three rounds,the competitors received a “mysterybasket,” and they had to quickly concoct a recipe that would appeal to thetrio of judges’ taste buds. One competitor was eliminated in each round.Chef Latasha McCutcheon was thecelebrity judge of the night. She wasthe winner of Hell’s Kitchen Season13. McCutcheon was joined by LakeCity High School Culinary InstructorCoco Floyd and Baker’s Sweets OwnerJennifer Baker.Chef and Lake City High School alumniCadejah Stukes won the event andtook home the cash prize.Stukes is currently a Cook II HMSHost at 1897 Market in the CharlotteDouglas International Airport. The stout competition producedintense head-to-head battles, andthere was plenty of drama as the clockticked away during each round.Lady Stingers Receive Their Region X/District F Championship RingsOn Friday, November 4, theFlorence-Darlington TechnicalCollege Lady Stingers softballteam received their championshiprings for winning RegionX/District Fduring the 2016 season.The ring ceremony took place at RedBone Alley Restaurant & Bar locatedin Florence. In the last three years, thisprogram has grown from around 250students to more than 1,250 studentsthis past fall. Students, parents, andemployers are realizing the value ofthis program since it allows studentsto leave high school with significantcollege credit that will transfer to justabout any college or university. Thiscredit also helps students to enter theworkforce earlier.We have made significant accomplishments this year by investing in theentire college family, our students,and our facilities. This year we will seethe completion of the new Automotive/HVAC Technology Center. It isscheduled to open in 2017. This newfacility allows for the expansion ofthese programs since waiting lists exist for both programs. As the Automotive and HVAC programs move intothis new facility, other space will befreed up to expand our Caterpillar andWelding programs, both of which alsohave student waiting lists.In looking back at last year’s accomplishments, it gives us pause to beexcited about the many possibilitiesfor 2017. In addition, a new facility to replace our current Lake CitySite, is now in the design phase andshould be under construction by July2017 with completion scheduled forspring of 2018. We are also excitedabout another project that will beginin February of 2017. This project willinclude an athletic complex with fieldsfor both men’s baseball and women’ssoftball.As you can see lots of activity is takingplace at FDTC, and 2017 promises tobe another exciting year. FeaturesFrom Around TechSouth Carolina Virtual College of FDTC Launches New WebsiteThe South Carolina VirtualCollege (SCVC) at FDTC recentlylaunched a new website alongwith its rebranding.The website (scvc.fdtc.edu) waslaunched on Monday, November 21,2016 ,with the goal to better assiststudents with their online needs.During any given semester, 35-40% ofthe student population at the collegeis taking online courses.“The main reason why we developedthe SC Virtual College of FDTCwebsite, was to support studentsuccess here at the college,” saidDirector of the SC Virtual College atFDTC Derk Riechers. “This websitehas a student-center design whichallows for easy navigation to differentlinks and pages. I’m stilllearning!At the South Carolina Associationfor Higher Continuing Education(SCAHCE) conference during the firstweek of October, Lakischi Livingstonwas given the Outstanding ContinuingEducation Support Staff Award.“The award was given to meat Trident Technical College inCharleston,” Livingston said. “Mysupervisor asked me to go alongwith her because she needed to goon the last day. I read my bio, andfive minutes later, I was called upto receive the award. It took mecompletely by surprise! NewsFDTC Foundation Hosts New Orleans’ Preservation Hall Jazz BandThe world famous PreservationHall Jazz Band from New Orleansvisited the Southeastern Institute of Manufacturing and Technology (SiMT) on Thursday, November 3,2016.The FDTC Educational Foundation’s“Let’s Get Jazzed” event at Club SiMTbenefited the non-profit organization’s important mission by helpingdeserving students with their collegeexpenses.“When you purchase your jazz tickets,your funds will go directly to makesure a young person continues theirdream of getting a higher education,”said Vice President of the FDTC Educational Foundation Jill Lewis.The Preservation Hall Jazz Band’s visitto the SiMT was their second appearance. The band dazzled the Galaattendees in 2011.The night began with the President’sreception at 6 p.m., followed bydinner at 6:30 p.m. and the band’sperformance at 7:30 p.m.“The Gala was a fantastic event,”said Director of Development CelesteKahn. “The Preservation Hall JazzBand is the best there is, and theyhave awesome energy! I love to swingdance, and there were lots of peopleout on the floor. The band had a greatrapport with the audience, and everyone had a lot of fun.”Thomasena Thomas Presents Project at Inaugural Honors Forum at FDTCFInstructor Marjory Hall. “The presentation requirement is intendedto help students acquire a senseof ownership of the authority theygain through research and study.irst-year honor student Thomasena T. NewsFDTC Foundation Joins the Global #GivingTuesday MovementThe Florence-Darlington TechnicalCollege Educational Foundationparticipated in #GivingTuesday,a global day of giving that occurred onthe first Tuesday after Thanksgiving onNovember 29, 2016.The FDTC Educational Foundationraised money toward student scholarships and state-of-the-art learning equipment. FDTC’s theme forthe fundraising effort was “We arebecause you give.” The theme refersto students being able to achieve theirhigher educational goals because donors are able to help support them bycontributing scholarship funds.“#GivingTuesday inspires people tocollaborate in improving their local communities and to give back inimpactful ways to the charities andcauses they support,” said FDTC Educational Foundation Director Jill Lewis.“This was the first time we haveparticipated in #GivingTuesday, andwe hope it will not be the last. We aretransitioning away from traditionalteaching methods and implementing3D programs that allow our automotive and manufacturing students tolearn via virtual reality. It’s very exciting!”Celeste Kahn, Director of Development for the FDTC Educational Foundation, said, “The model for this eventwas peer-to-peer fundraising. It wasvery social media-driven. The goal wasfor people to give and then encouragetheir friends to jump on the bandwagon. We wanted folks to understandhow much our students rely on theirsupport. A late-race cautionbunched the field back together,and Goodson was able to takeadvantage of the opportunity toretake the lead.The Goodson family has a long,rich history at the 0.538-mileNASCAR Home Track located justoff Highway 501 in Myrtle Beach.Goodson’s victory came duringthe prestigious Myrtle Beach 400opening weekend. NewsFDTC Students Travel to the Nation’s CapitalTwo Florence-Darlington Technical College students recentlytraveled to Washington D.C. torepresent the college at the NationalScience Foundation ATE PrincipleInvestigators’ Conference.
