She will now compete for a scholarship at thedistrict level. She also received a 2,500 scholarship for first place in the NAACP’sOratory Contest! Way to go after those scholarships, Ceana!This month’s checklist:1. Check out the senior page on the GHS website under the “For Students” tab.The senior calendar and other important information is included!2. Most colleges’ competitive scholarship deadlines have passed, so now you canfocus on private scholarships like the ones in this newsletter. Start applying!!3. Be on the lookout for an e-mail about being selected for verification. This willcome from the college and is legitimate. If you get this, you need to get all ofthe documents they are requesting submitted ASAP for them to release yourscholarship offer!4. Register by Friday, January 10th for the February ACT and choose to send thesescores to the colleges you applied to. Remember that even one extra point canmean more scholarship money or even affect the classes you take in college!5. Make your FAFSA appointment so you can be eligible for financial aid. This scholarship gives full tuition to students who go to an in-statecollege. You have to meet the family income requirements, which are subject to changefrom year to year. Here are the income levels for last year to give you an idea if youqualify. Private ScholarshipsRon Brown Scholar Program: Deadline January 9. The Ron Brown Scholar Programseeks to identify African-American high school seniors who will make significantcontributions to society. This scholarship is highly competitive. Applicants must excelacademically, exhibit exceptional leadership potential, participate in community serviceactivities and demonstrate financial need. The applicant must be a US citizen or hold apermanent resident visa card. The program awards 10 students nationwide each yearwith a 10,000 annual for 4 years, totaling 40,000. Kennedy Library Foundation invites U.S. high school students to write an essay on anact of political courage by a U.S. elected official who served during or after 1917, theyear JFK was born. The first place winner willreceive 10,000 Twenty-five finalists will be awarded various cash amounts as well.Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. (Lawrence E. Roberts Chapter): Deadline January 27. 3,000 in scholarships will be awarded to deserving students. Applicants must meetimmigration eligibility listed on the website as well as have a minimum C overall GPA.This scholarship awards up to 20,000 per year up to 4 years to partner colleges.Mississippi Association of Supervisors (MAS) County Employee ScholarshipProgram: Deadline February 1. Applicants must have an immediate family member(parent, stepparent, grandparent, step-grandparent, or legal guardian) currently workingfor or retired from a Mississippi county. A county employee does not include schooldistrict, county hospital, or other separate entity. Students can download an applicationpacket at www.mssupervisors.org/scholarship-programJackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship: Deadline February 1. This is a verycompetitive national scholarship for minority students who demonstrate exceptionalleadership, community service, and financial need. Students must also have a 21 orhigher on the ACT. Elvis Presley Fan Club Scholarship: Deadline February 14. This is a state-widescholarship competition, with scholarships ranging from 2,000 to 5,000. Applicantsmust perform and record one Elvis song and one song of their choice. Applicants alongwith videos must be received by February 14, 2019. This scholarship is for military dependentspursuing a college, university, or vocational school in the fall of 2018. Thewinner receives 2,500, a trip to Washington, D.C. to meet the Secretary of State, and a fullscholarship for a Semester at Sea educational voyage. This essay contest encourages highschool students to think about important international issues and learn about the United StatesForeign Service. The Walter Anderson scholarship awards one 1,000 andone 500 scholarship to students with a winning original work of art. Guidelines on4

creation and submission of your original artwork along with the essay and applicationdetails are able in guidance.Jackson State University Gulf Coast Alumni Scholarship: Deadline April 15. Two 1,000 scholarships will be awarded to two high school seniors who plan attend JSU inthe fall of 2020. Applicants must submit an application, a typed essay (500 wordminimum) on “Why I would like to attend Jackson State University”, and must livewithin the three coastal counties of Jackson, Harrison, and Hancock. Applications areavailable in guidance.PB&J Scholarship- Deadline May 31. Scholarships range from 500 to 1,000.The PB&J scholarship is awarded to students who have experienced challenges in theirlife that may not have allowed them to reflect well academically, but who have the driveto succeed.
