ELCORAZONDEPage 5BARELASEat Healthy This Summer6 HEALTHY SUMMER FOODS TO ADD TO YOUR DIETIt’s summer—that amazing time of year when fresh produce abounds.Fresh fruits and vegetables have a high water content, loads of fiber, and are packed with nutrients, and many require no cooking at all!Corn: Nothing says summer like fresh sweet corn. Two antioxidants - lutein and zeaxanthin - in corn help your eyes filter out someof the sun’s damaging rays and also help lower your risk of developing age-related macular degeneration - the leading cause ofblindness in people over 60.Tart Cherries: They deliver a host of health benefits. You may have heard that drinking tart cherry juice can help you get a betternight's sleep, but did you know that compounds in tart cherries may also help you slim down and get leaner?Tomatoes: There’s no question that sunscreen should be your first line of defense against the blazing summer sun. But eating tomatoes could give you a little extra protection: consuming more lycopene - the carotenoid that makes tomatoes red - may protectyour skin from sunburn.Watermelon: Staying hydrated keeps your memory sharp and your mood stable. It also helps keep your body cool (by sweating)during hot summer months. The good news is that you don’t just have to drink water. You can eat it, too: watermelon is 92 percent water.Raspberries: Raspberries are a great source of fiber -some of it soluble in the form of pectin, which helps lower cholesterol. Onecup of raspberries has 8 grams of fiber.Blueberries: Fresh blueberries straight from the berry patch are a special treat! It turns out the antioxidants in them may helpward off muscle fatigue.During the summer months, enjoy the plentiful choices at your local farm standor supermarket for some delicious and nutritious treats!Volunteer InformationAttention Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) Volunteers: Volunteer hours are due to the RSVP office no later than the fifth(5th) day of each month. ELCORAZONDEBARELASPAGEDiane M. MuellerAge: 85Hometown: AlbuquerqueNational Senior Games: 50-, 100-, & 200-yard Fly; 400-yard individualmedleyAs a teenager, retired Albuquerque attorney Diane M. Mueller grew upswimming in the freezing waters of Lake Michigan. Now at 84, she is stillswimming and winning medals in the sport’s most challenging stroke – thebutterfly, now just called the fly. The stroke combines a dolphin kick and anoverhead pull stroke that raises the swimmer’s upper body out of the water.Diane says she loves the stroke that many other swimmers find exhausting.“I like the rhythm of it,” Mueller said. “It’s more than exercise, it’s almostmeditation.”In last summer’s New Mexico Senior Olympics State Summer Games,Mueller qualified for the National Senior Games in the 50-, 100-, and 200-yard fly, and the 100-, 200-, and400-yard individual medley. She celebrated a birthday before the Games so she will be swimming in the 85 to89-year-old age range. She is hoping to beat her performance from two years ago at the 2017 National SeniorGames in Birmingham, AL, in which she won Gold Medals in the 200-yard fly and in the 400-yard individualmedley. This female dynamo maintains a work-out regiment that would challenge many women half her age. Her routine includes swimming four days a week and bench-pressing and power-lifting three days a week. Thoughshe hasn’t been weight lifting for very long, she already has set some state records. She also competes inMasters Swimming competitions. Recently, she added ballroom and country dancing two nights a week toher routine. Mueller says the dancing is both good exercise and a wonderfully social way to stay active.Younger athletes call her a “role model” for her dedication to life-long fitness, Mueller said.In retirement, she also took up painting. Recently, an Albuquerque gallery featured an exhibition of her vibrantly colored abstract works. She loves the piano and frequently plays the piano for less active seniors inassisted living centers.7
