ColonoscopyA colonoscopy is a common screeningprocedure for colon cancer or rectal cancer.People age 50 and older are advised to havea colonoscopy every 10 years if they haveno special risk factors for colon cancer. Ifa relative has had colon cancer, or if youhave inflammatory bowel diseases such asCrohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, you mayget a colonoscopy earlier or more often. Ifprecancerous polyps are found, they can beremoved during the colonoscopy.Make Colon CancerPrevention a PriorityCancer is responsible for 24 percent ofdeaths among men, making it the secondleading cause of death among men,according to the CDC. Colon cancer isthe third-leading cause of cancer-relateddeaths among men. Since the risk ofcolon cancer increases with age, doctorsrecommend getting screened beginningat age 50, or earlier if you have other riskfactors, such as a family history of coloncancer or colon polyps.
