Stories In The SpotlightAs told by Joanne MillerThese pictures are of our lake, where we live near the dam (ouraddress is Dam Road) in Deruyter, NY so this is right in front of ourhouse. The dam has a leak in it and if it breaks, it would flood everythingfor 50 miles around. It was a feeder for the Erie Canal. They arefixing it now. First, they let the water down to repair the dam. They set up cameras to watch the dam in case it leaks more. Thelights come on and the cameras take pictures. The pictures go toa screen where someone is watching it all the time. An engineeris there 24 hours a day.Page 2 - Tropic Isles - November 2019Those mounds out there are muskrat houses that remain afterthe water was let down. There used to be trees all along the backside of the dam. They have removed a bunch of the trees already, but they have to remove all of them. Everywhere they removeone, they have to refill the hole with the same material as soonas they pull up the roots. This is a picture of the overflow of thedam. They are pretty sure they will get it fixed without any problems.Jack and I were watching their operations very closely.

They served andfought to protect us, to keep our country safe, and to preserveour way of life. Veterans gave their time and risked their lives foryou and me. In some cases, they made the ultimate sacrifice. This holiday originally was called Armistice Day and was firstcelebrated in 1921. In 1954, President Eisenhower changed it toVeteran’s Day, in honor of those who served and died from all wars.Remember to thank our veterans for their service. November alsoreminds us that we have a lot to be thankful for—new friends, family connections, each new day, good health and healing, andthe little things in life.Happy Thanksgiving to all!Thought for the DayIf you are more fortunate than others, build a longer table nota taller fence.Idea To Ponder .The City of Happinessis in the State of Mind.November 2019 - Tropic Isles - Page 3

Manager’s Hour Resumes InNovember 2019The first Manager’s Coffee Hour of the season will beheld on Thursday, November 14 at 9:30 AM in the Auditorium. The Coffee Hour will be held on the second Thursday of eachmonth from November 2019 through March 2020. Cups, coffee, lightener, and sweetener will be provided. As always, the atmosphere at the meetings will be cordial and respectful. The purposeof these meetings is to give me the opportunity to hear what youhave to say about Tropic Isles. We want to make sure that I, you,and the staff are all focused towards the same objectives andso that you, the residents, are having your needs met. I stronglyencourage you to attend and participate in letting me know howto help make this a better community. I need to know what youwant, if I am to have any chance of providing it to you. I hope tosee you there!Paul Smith, ManagerMark your calendar for these dates:December 12, January 9, February 13, March 26Please Keep Our CanalsFree of Debris! In 2012-13, the canals in Tropic Isles weredredged at a cost exceeding 150,000. That dredging provided deeper water access in places where there waslittle to none. Since that time, we have tried to keep our canalsclean and free of any type of debris. YOU CAN HELP BY NOTblowing grass clippings/lawn debris into the canals or streetsand making sure your lawn maintenance provider is aware ofthat as well. If you are mowing lawns for residents in the park, please do not allow grass clippings to end up in the canal orthe street. They eventually get washed into the canals. Moreimportantly, REMEMBER ANYTHING THAT YOU ALLOW TO GOINTO THE STREETS (lawn clippings, sand, gravel, dirt, stones, debris, etc.) will get washed into the street drains and endup in the canal with the next rain or lawn irrigation systemthat isn’t monitored correctly. The canals will start to fill in andthen more dredging will be needed at a cost to the residents.PLEASE DO YOUR PART! EVERY LITTLE BIT HELPS!Artists GroupHello Tropic Isles’ artists! New members are welcome. Please join us everyFriday from 1–4 PM at the Yacht Club or alternatively at the Auditorium. Thereare no fees, just a relaxed, casual group of people willing to share knowledgeand enjoy some time together. Please bring your own art supplies and come along. Welook forward to seeing everyone. Laughter Is The Best Medicine! I hate when a couple argues in public and I missed thebeginning, so I don’t know whose side I’m on. I had my patience tested. I’m negative. Don’t bother walking a day in my shoes. Spend 30 seconds inmy head. That’ll freak you right out. If you answer the phone with “Hello, you’re on the air!” mosttelemarketers will quickly hang up. If you’re sitting in public and a stranger takes the seat next toyou, just stare straight ahead and say, “Did yo
