Egnyte v. AccellionIntroductionEnterprises grapple with many challenges associated with file management; they need to embrace consumerization and empowerusers without losing control, while also respecting data gravity - the reality that not all files belong in the cloud. With multiple filesharing solutions available today, what should IT look for when selecting the right one?The Egnyte File Sharing Platform delivers enterprise caliber file-sharing for businesses by combining the speed and security of localstorage with the accessibility of the cloud. Users easily store, share, access, and synchronize their files, while IT retains centralizedadministration and control to enforce business policies. Egnyte provides: An enterprise file-sharing platform for 100% of your filesFlexible deployment options – cloud, on-premises, or hybridComprehensive security, compliance, and IT controlsCutting edge, innovative technology that’s designed to be user friendlyThis whitepaper compares two enterprise file-sharing solutions, Egnyte and Accellion, around deployment options, common filesharing use cases, usability, and security.Flexible Deployment – Cloud, On-Prem or HybridWhen it comes to file access, sharing, or collaboration, the size, sensitivity, or data type dictates where the files are located: in thecloud, strictly on-prem or using a hybrid approach. Egnyte is the only provider to enable on-premises, cloud-only and hybriddeployment models that enable businesses to access and store 100 percent of their files in the way best suited to meet their needs.Users can access and share files seamlessly from any device, no matter where files are stored. This differs from Accellion which takes an ‘either-or’ approach to deployment. Customers do not have the choice of storing somefiles in the cloud while retaining the more sensitive ones on-premises using a unified deployment.3Egnyte Inc. 1350 W. Egnyte v. AccellionCloud ONLY With Egnyte Cloud File ServerEgnyte Cloud File Server provides robust online storage and collaboration without sacrificing security, compliance, and control. Itenables easy access, sharing, and collaboration for your files from any device. Egnyte houses all file servers in industry-leading TierII, SSAE 16 compliant colocation facilities. Egnyte offers multiple cloud access points for users including Desktop Sync, WebInterface, FTP, Map Drive, Mobile Apps, and WebEdit. With Accellion, users are limited to accessing files from the web, sync clientsand mobile apps.Although Accellion offers a public cloud solution, its legacy is an on-premises file transfer solution. Their public cloud offering is1relatively new and is targeted specifically towards smaller business (Less than 500 employees) . They use Amazon S3 to host datainstead of their own data centers.Hybrid with Egnyte Storage SyncWith Egnyte Storage Sync, files on any local storage device (direct attached, NAS or SAN) can be synced online, enabling users tostore, share, and access from anywhere, with any device. Storage Sync in conjunction with the Cloud File Server combines the“access from anywhere” of cloud with "in-the-office" fast performance of local storage, thereby providing hybrid file storage andsharing.Accellion DOES NOT have a solution to meet this requirement. Once customers move their data to the public cloud they are stuckthere – without any insurance plan. This poses a significant challenge for customers who regularly work with larger files (e.g. CADdrawings, videos, graphic design images, etc.) or have offices in areas with poor internet connectivity.On-Prem ONLY With Egnyte Storage ConnectAlthough companies are rapidly adopting the cloud, businesses often need to retain control over certain data elements on-premisesto ensure regulatory compliance. Egnyte Storage Connect provides mobile VPN-less access to files stored on any local storage, without files or file metadata passing through the cloud. That means secure point-to-point file access and sharing, while your dataremains behind the firewall - free from privacy risks.Accellion provides the option of a private cloud that is either managed on-premises by the customer, hosted by Accellion or acombination of the two. But in all these cases, the private and the public cloud offerings are two separate solutions with nointegration between the data and the users. As a result, customers can never get a single unified view into all the files, devices, orusers and also have the maintenance overhead of managing disparate products from the same vendor.1http://www.accellion.com/pricing4Egnyte Inc. 1350 W. Egnyte v. AccellionUse CasesMoving File Servers to the CloudFile Server Architecture and Data MigrationAccellion does not look or feel remotely like a file server and is not very user friendly for customers moving to the cloud. Performingsimple tasks such as seeing a folder tree is not very intuitive and requires multiple steps. If customers are using Accellion’s publiccloud solution, it is limited to isolated use cases.Any customer looking to migrate their file servers to the cloud is probably also working with a complex permission scheme. This isanother area where Accellion fails, as it does not support sub-folder exclusion for permissions. As a result, customers will not beable to replicate permissions 1:1 when moving to the cloud - instead, they’ll need to reorganize their data structure to matchAccellion’s product capabilities.Mapped Drive AccessEgnyte provides a more gradual path to cloud adoption for end users. It enables users to map cloud folders as network drives onthe desktop. This familiar access point helps users who are accustomed to accessing files from a lettered drive transition to thecloud.Accellion does not provide this capability; resulting in IT purchasing a solution that is never used by the end user because ofusability concerns.Sending and Receiving FilesEgnyte understands that different situations may call for different security precautions. When you share files with Egnyte via publiclinks, you can set a password for the link, decide when the link should expire and choose to be notified when the link is clicked.Users also have the option of sending private links that are accessible only to account users when sharing more sensitive files.5Egnyte Inc. 1350 W. Middlefield Road Mountain View, CA 94043, USA Phone: 877-7EGNYTE (877-734-6983)www.egnyte.com 2014 by Egnyte Inc. All rights reserved.

Egnyte v. AccellionEgnyte offers all the security controls businesses require when sharing files, but gives users the flexibility to determine when theyare needed.By contrast, Accellion’s sharing model is completely inflexible. Accellion has no concept of a “Public Link,” so sending a file to arecipient outside of your account requires multiple steps. Compare this to Egnyte where sending a public link is a simple two-stepprocess.Sharing files with EgnyteSharing files with Accellion1. You share a file1. You share a file2. The recipient clicks the link in their email toview/download the file2. Recipient clicks on link in second email to activate account –“Download” link in first email will not work until account isactivated3. Recipient activates their account and is logged into yourcompany account4. Can then download the file (preview option not available)6Egnyte Inc. 1350 W. Egnyte v. AccellionSome of the key limitations with Accellion’s file sharing include:Folder Links: You can share multiple files at once via a link, but the only way to share a folder is to invite someone as a user to theAccellion account. There are several limitations of this approach: Unnecessary bloating of user licenses Added user management (add, delete, etc.) on IT’s part Security complications in case admins forget to de-provision these added users7Egnyte Inc. 1350 W. Middlefield Road Mountain View, CA 94043, USA Phone: 877-7EGNYTE (877-734-6983)www.egnyte.com 2014 by Egnyte Inc. All rights reserved.

Egnyte v. AccellionPublic Links: Accellion has no concept of a public link. When sharing files, the only option is to have Accellion send a link to theuser via email. This results in usability issues around viewing/copying these links in other mediums like chat, emails, websites, documents, and other enterprise apps.Receiving Files: Accellion does not have a way to collect files from a large group of external users. This makes it a non-suitablesolution for enterprise use cases around submissions of tender, homework, bid, proposal, or business documents.Preview Files: Link recipients cannot preview a file before downloading it. This is a severe usability issue as users end up spendinga lot of time downloading, reviewing, deleting files as compared to being able to preview a file with a single-click.BrandingWhether sharing files internally or with clients, many organizations customize the user interface to reinforce their corporate identity.Egnyte provides a rich set of capabilities for custom corporate branding, allowing companies to upload logos, change colors of theinterface and create custom message templates. The access URL can also be customized and integrated as part of your corporatedomain.Accellion offers limited white-labeling options. Customers can upload a header image that appears on the login and registrationpage, but they cannot remove the Kiteworks (Accellion) branding. Additional limitations include:1.2.3.Changing colors of the interfaceCustomizing Access URLs (not available in public cloud solution)Creating custom message templatesSyncing FilesEgnyte provides the ability to sync files in real-time and selectively synchronize sub-folders allowing users to sync only the contentthat’s most relevant.Accellion offers sync clients, but these lag far behind the industry standard for syncing tools.8Egnyte Inc. 1350 W. Middlefield Road Mountain View, CA 94043, USA Phone: 877-7EGNYTE (877-734-6983)www.egnyte.com 2014 by Egnyte Inc. All rights reserved.

Egnyte v. Accellion Accellion’s does not offer real-time sync. The minimum frequency for sync is 1 hour. This poses a challenge for remoteusers or those who travel frequently and hence Accellion fails to meet the basic requirement of any enterprise-gradedeployment. Accellion does not allow users to selectively synchronize sub-folders. This is yet another enterprise requirement for globalteams working on multiple clients. Accellion’s sync client lacks several usability features like absence of a visual indicator of overall sync progress. It does notprovide basic right-click functionality that can be used for sending a link, viewing previous versions of files, or forannotations.SecurityPermissions ModelAccellion does not provide any roles that can perform only read and write operations. As a result, any user who gets the ability toedit files can also delete them. This can be a glaring security concern for most enterprise use cases.Sub-folder ExclusionAccellion does not provide sub-folder exclusion. For example, the Finance parent folder has 3 sub-folders: reports, budgets, andpayables. The entire finance team needs access to the Finance folder, with the exception of the budgets sub-folder. The Budgetssub-folder should only be accessible by the Corporate Controller. This’s easily accomplished with Egnyte’s sub-folder permissionsstructure, but is simply not possible with Accellion.Egnyte’s folder structure is organized the way businesses are organized, with shared folders and private folders. Each shared foldercan have any number of sub-folders. Account administrators centrally manage permissions and include/exclude users and groups atany level of the hierarchy.9Egnyte Inc. 1350 W. Egnyte v. AccellionTwo-Step Login VerificationEgnyte provides enhanced security with two-step login verification which requires the use of a third piece of information (in additionto username and password) to access an Egnyte account. Accellion does not offer a native Two-Step Login Verification.UsabilityEgnyte understands that an intuitive user interface (UI) is critical for user adoption. Egnyte conducts regularly scheduled usabilitytests and enhancements, making sure that the UI is easy to use. The end result is a user interface that's always cutting edge anduser friendly. Here are some examples:Egnyte allows users to easily drag and drop files (Any single file upto 10GB) onto the web interface.Egnyte provides a gallery view that allows users to view and interact with images separately from other files in a photo gallery.Egnyte allows users to preview all common file formats including audio and video before downloading them.10Egnyte Inc. 1350 W. Egnyte v. AccellionOn the other hand, Accellion has some serious usability issues as mentioned in the above sections. Unlike Egnyte, Accellion doesnot offer a web-based editing tool within its Web UI; as a result, users must manually download a file, make their changes, and thenre-upload that file when working with Accellion. Navigating from folder to folder within the UI is time-consuming since Accellionlacks a useful folder tree. Moreover, the UI does not support previewing of any kind for files—even for images.Accellion does not support moving folders, a basic file server operation, in any of its views. All of this results in lost user productivity and added frustration.Egnyte vs. Accellion Comparison ChartFeautreEgnyteAccellionü !1DeploymentPublic Cloud11Egnyte Inc. 1350 W.
