INTRODUCTION TO RADIOLOGICTECHNOLOGYAssociate of Applied Science Degree in Radiologic TechnologyIntroductionThe Tarrant County College Associate of Applied Sciences Degree in Radiology Technology teaches the use of ionizing radiation to image parts of thehuman body for diagnostic interpretation.Career OpportunitiesThe profession of Radiology Technology employment is expected to grow faster than average. Federal projections estimate a 30.40% increase from 2018through 2022.Most technologists gain employment in hospitals, outpatient imaging centers, urgent care centers, and physician offices.Program ContentStudies combine general education along with radiologic technology courses to develop high-quality technical and patient care skills.In addition, studies cover areas such as: Medical TerminologyRadiographic ProceduresAdvanced Medical ImagingRadiographic Imaging EquipmentRadiation Biology and ProtectionRadiographic PathologyThis 2-year Program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). PATIENT SAFETY AND WELFAREALL APPLICANTS MUST HAVE: Visual Acuity (with corrective lenses, if needed) to identify cyanosis (absence of respiratorymovement) in patients, adverse skin reactions to treatments, read physicians orders, read very fineprint on medication containers, visualize displays on monitors and other equipment, and evaluateimages for diagnostic quality. Hearing ability (with auditory aids, if needed) to understand the normal speaking voice without viewingthe speaker’s face; hear and monitor alarms, emergency signals, call bells from patients, equipmenttimers and alarms; and take/hear blood pressures. Physical ability to stand for prolonged periods of time, perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation,transfer patients and objects of 50 pounds or more, perform treatment procedures with two hands,push patients and pieces of equipment from room to room and/or maneuver in limited spaces. Healthinsurance is also required. The ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form by speaking clearly and succinctlywhen explaining treatment procedures to patients, family members, medical staff and when describingpatient conditions/reactions and implementing health techniques. Write legibly and correctly in patient’srecords for legal documentation. Sufficient manual dexterity to use aseptic and sterile technique, prepare needles, syringes,contrast media, and manipulate equipment. The ability to function safely under stressful situations involving patient care; to adapt to the everchanging environment inherent in clinical situations involving patient care, and to exercise independentjudgment and discretion in the performance of assigned responsibilities.

SELECTION NOTIFICATION:CANDIDATES AND SELECTION INTOPROGRAMWhen Will I Be Notified?3 to 4 Weeks after the applicationdeadline, the top 35 candidates areinvited to a mandatory informationmeeting.Selection Into ProgramAcceptance Notification of theselected 24 applicants are sentwithin 10 days after the informationmeeting.AlternatesThe remaining applicants within theTop 35 are designated asalternates.It is important to remember thatselection is based on how eachapplicant compares with others inthe applicant pool for this program.Applicants with higher GPA’s, HESIA2 scores and science grades willbe the most competitive.The selection committee notifies allcandidates by e-mail of theiradmission status (accepted,alternate, not accepted orincomplete). It is the reponsibility ofthe applicant to make sure thecorrect e-mail address has beenprovided.

ELIGIBILITYMust have a TCCD ID Number To be eligible to apply for theRadiologic Technologyprogram, the student mustfirst be a current TCCDstudent. This means that thestudent has a TCCD studentID number and has alreadyapplied and been accepted tothe college. Individuals that have notapplied to the college mayfollow this link: Apply ForAdmission to begin theprocess.Transcript EvaluationTSI Requirements ALL official transcripts from a collegeor university other than TCCD, mustbe received and evaluated by TCCDat the time of Application to theRadiologic Technology program. Meet TCCD’s TexasSuccess Initiative (TSI)requirements. Foradditional information onTSI requirements, Pleasevisit: TSI Requirements First, submit your transcripts to theTranscript Office or your localRegistrars office. This process can take up to twomonths, please keep this in mind. Also remember to include an officialtranscript with your application IFyour evaluation has not yet beencompleted.

ELIGIBILITY CONTINUEDPrerequisite Science Courses The courses below, orequivalents, must have beencompleted within 5 yearsfrom time of application. BIOL 2401 BIOL 2402 Please note that youmust have a C orhigher for thesegrades to beconsidered. Also youhave a maximum oftwo attempts percourse. Please ALSO notethat SCIT COURSESare not acceptedreplacements for theBIOL courses. Wewill not allow anyexceptions.Other RequirementsImmunizations/Screenings Please be aware that the TAC (TexasAdministrative Code) and DFWHospital Council Standards requirethat all students in health-relatedprograms complete certainimmunizations. These MUST besubmitted with your application. Theyare currently as follows: HEPATITIS B MMR TDAP Varicella Influenza TB Skin Test*Some of these immunizations takeup to 6 months to complete (Hep B),it is best to get started NOW, or youcannot apply for the program. Once accepted into the program,you will be required to complete adrug screen, keep CPR current(American Heart Associationcertified BLS for HealthcareProviders), and a criminalbackground check. If you have anycriminal charges, you need toemail me to discuss what youmust do in order to find outwhether or not you can apply forthe program. Felony’s, Assault,Domestic Violence and DrugCharges automatically bar youfrom eligibility. You will also need to renew yourTB annually and Flu seasonally. House Bill 1508 which tookeffect in September 2017requires that all of our studentsare notified that criminaloffense convictions that occurwhile enrolled in our programswill affect their ability to applyfor an occupational license.

PREREQUISITE COURSEREQUIRED/RECOMMENDEDALL RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGY AND GENERAL EDUCATIONCOURSES MUST BE PASSED WITH A MINIMUM GRADE OF C The below bold courses, or approved equivalents, must have been completed within 5 years from the time ofdeadline. There are absolutely NO exceptions. Must have a C or higher. BIOL 2401 (Anatomy and Physiology I) BIOL 2402 (Anatomy and Physiology II) Please note that the 2 sciences listed above, HESI A2 exam, immunizations and all TSI Requirements must becompleted prior to application It is highly recommended that the following general education courses be completed prior to program application.These course can be taken before admission into the program. ENGL 1301 (English Composition I) Either PSYC 2315 (Psych of Adjust/Human Relation) OR PSYC 2301 (Intro to Psych) HPRS 2201 (Pathophysiology) HPRS 1206 (Medical Terminology) Computer or Information Technology Elective (3 hour course) One Creative Arts/Language, Philosophy or Culture elective: (3 hour course)

HESI A2ALL APPLICANTS MUST HAVE A MINIMUM 2.5 GPA TO BE ELIGIBLETO APPLYNot only will there be a minimum GPA of 2.5; you will also be required to take the HESI A2 test prior to application.What does the HESI A2 test cover:Math: Basic math skills; a 50 item exam that focuses on math skills needed for health care fields, including basic addition,subtraction, multiplication, fractions, decimals, ration and proportion, household measures, and general math facts that areuseful. Personal calculators are not permitted during this part of the test although there is a basic function calculatoravailable within the test.Reading Comprehension: A 47 item exam that includes reading scenarios that are health related. Provides reading scenariosin order to measure reading comprehension, including: identifying the main idea, finding meaning of words in context, passagecomprehension, making logical inferences, etc.Vocabulary & General Knowledge: A 50 item exam that contains vocabulary terms that are commonly used in both generalEnglish speaking settings and in health care fields.Grammar: A 50 item exam that contains basic grammar including: parts of speech, important terms and their uses in grammar,and commonly occurring grammatical errors.Other InformationPlease check the following link for more HESI A2 Information (registration, cost, test ers/hesi-a2/Results of test will be available immediately after completion the test is 4.5 hours long, most people finish in 2 hours.

BONUS POINTSHEALTH CARE PROFESSIONS .1 will be given to those registered with TCCD as a military Veteran .1 will be given to those who were enrolled as dual-credit high schoolstudents .1 will be given to those who are returning to our programs aftercompleting an advanced degree (associate’s or higher). Transcriptsmust state successful completion with GPA of 2.5 or higher, which isthe minimum GPA for applying to the programs we currently offer.

RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGYPROGRAM SCHEDULE/LENGTHCourse & Clinical HoursProgram courses and labs usually meet weekdays between7am and 5pm. While in the program the potential exists forevening and weekend clinical rotations.This is a Full-Time ProgramStudents need to be able to commit to a full-time schedule forsix consecutive semester (2 YEARS). Part-time or eveninglearning options are not available. During your first summersemester, you will have a schedule of 4 days per week. This willincrease in the Fall and Spring semesters to 5 days per week.
