I cannotunderstand his decision to discontinuethe library column in The Islander. Hesays he felt it was causing " . . . adisservice to the Library . . . "I cannotsee how a column that informs librarypatrons of Sanibel, or from any area whoreads The Islander, of the book selectionand topics of interest in the branch is adisservice. In my education inlibrarionship, I was informed (possiblyI'm too naive!) that one of the majorduties of a librarian is to make the publicaware of the library's services andbooks. The best way for the SanibelPublic Library to do this would be thelocal community paper, The Islander.Mr. Harrison stated the .". . .decision is (was) made only for the goodof our library." Was he thinking of thegood of the library building or librarystaff? The decision should have beenmade for the good of the library patronsabove all else. I hope the library'scirculation doesn't start "Backsliding" or"We (the concerned) do not feel that wecan continue to ignore the fact anylonger."The column will be missed by morethan just the local Sanibel patrons.Eileen DoyleCincinati, OH.TO THE ISLANDER:I, Nate Taylor, express my sincerethanks to all who voted for me forCounty Commissioner, District 2, in theSeptember 10 Democratic Primary. To those who worked so diligentlyon my behalf, I express my profoundgratitude.I humbly solicit both the voters andcampaign workers to continue in yourefforts for good government and to giveyour full support to John Beckett in therunoff election, October 1.I have carefully studied t h equalifications of both candidates andconsider John Beckett to be bestqualified for the office.I si Nate TaylorTHEREDPELICANSarvibel IslandFloridaPristflTuRt Right At The Shopping PlasaFoltow The Sgns472 -1323THE NIMBLE THIMBLENEW HOURS: 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.Monday Wednesday - FridaySandy BentLUXURY SUIF REMTALS.XLwhile sans beacheimlsSsflibet Island, Florida3957 Gil IF DRIVE472-1188ft - 6 LIQUORSlent to- Hunter's Market 472-15*7Ope n Haily exeept lyndayJ otti a n dedgned for people who Hke tobe .waited on. Sundial reaches nomore than four stories.Sundial has seven tennis courts, golf, swimming and fishing off its ownprivate half-mile beach. The resort iseasily accessible by car along US 41 orguests may fly into Fort Myers Airport.Shuttle service is provided by Sundial.TO THE ISLANDER:As politicians go to the aid of otherpoliticians, Walter Shirey continues tolook after the interests of real people. Inhim we see the totally honest man, soalien to the smoke filled room that all hedoes is out in front of God and everybody whether we like it or not. Here is theelected official who is really a publicservant, a commissioner who knows hisjob and performs well, seven days aweek, if necessary, and a human being ofsuch sheer cussedness that he refuses tobuckle under the abuse which, almostdaily, is heaped upon him.Such men are few and i f between so where was everybody on Sept. 10th?We have spent many hours in publichearings and the thought of Walter notbeing there gives us the eold chills. There would be a lot of scalping partieswith no one to ride to the rescue certainly not the taciturn Mr. Beckett.Big money would dominate and strange, tribal beliefs while John Q. Public wasleft to whistle Dixie.Mr. Shirey's Democratic opponentis very well-funded, and only he knowshow and why. Walter Shirey, beholdento no one, badly needs 2,000 for a finalTV appearance before October 1. Peopleof all parties, voters or not, who careabout the same things he cares about canand should give him financial support.Democrats: this run-off is crucial. Votefor Shirey and urge your friends to.
