PaladinTHEKnights of Columbus Arden/Carmichael Council 4970 District 9 – Division 4Serving St. Ignatius of Loyola and Our Lady of the Assumption ParishesOCTOBER 2018COUNCIL 4970 OFFICERSVOLUME 19 NUMBER 4COME AND SEE YOURSELFGrand KnightJoe Romanazzi- Grand KnightMy brothers, it is no secret that as a council we are “gettingChaplainlong in the tooth”. The average age of our current membersnow exceeds 67 years. Many of our members are unable toFr. Eduino Silveira (916-481-5115)pastor@olaparish.netattend meetings or participate in council activities any longerDeputy Grand Knightbecause of age or health related limitations. We have heard itMiguel Sabral (916-397-1728)jokingly said that many of our members have white hair, grayFinancial Secretaryhair, or no hair at all. Like most other fraternal and benevolentorganizations, it is a constant battle to attract “new blood” and, onceMichael Corcoran (916-485-5743)on board, to keep them part of the flock. We must do both in order to remain aChancellorviable council. We usually accomplish recruitment goals by advertising, parishPatrick Topor (916-993-9380)drives, and by one-on-one conversations. But sometimes potential new membersWardenapproach us based on how we are observed living our own Christian lives. WeRick Di Regolo (916-966-1654)want new brothers who love God, their church, and their communities. They needGuardsto be of good character and eager to join in council programs and activities. WeMark Tamblyn(916-206-3553)need to always pay close attention to new members and must make sure they feelRick Sandoval(916-225-2430)welcome and comfortable around us. If we do, they are more apt to fullyTreasurerstparticipate after getting their Admission (1 ) Degree. Otherwise, we may neverSteve Millner (916-502-3162)see them again at another function or benefit from their future referrals to ourRecorderCouncil. These new (or newer) brothers are often waiting for someone to ask themMichael Fazio (973-747-6007)to join a committee or to somehow participate and contribute to reaching ourAdvocategoals.Todd Wilson(916-961-2761)It is not enough just to recruit, however. We also have to nurture and retain ourLecturercurrent members because it is a lot easier holding onto something we alreadyGary Mello(916-996-7438)have than always having to go out and find something new. For example,Trusteessometimes the kind act of driving a brother Knight to a meeting who is unable todrive after dark will result in keeping that brother active in council activities. WePeter Kilkenny (916-692-5446)can also encourage Brothers to talk about new programs or activities they wouldDcn Larry Niekamp(916-962-1324)Don Cotton (916-849-2288)like implemented. For example, participating in Veteran Stand Downs was anidea brought up by Brother Dan Aseltine a couple of years ago. The idea wasDistrict Deputy - District 9supported by membership and viola’, it is now a viable part of our Council’sJohn O’Donnell (916-961-4757)community focus.Insurance Field AgentThere is an abundance of work at all times to do in the Lord’s vineyard. We have aPaul Corsaro (916-792-4121)duty as Knights to help each other and to introduce others to our outstandingorganization with its wonderful array of programs reflecting the ideals of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism. An invitation as simple as “Come and see for yourself” may be all that is necessary to gainnew members for our council and to keep those we already have actively involved.Joe Romanazzi (916-965-4633)PRE-BUSINESS MEETING DINNERThe October meeting chef will be Brother Peter Mendenhall and Lady Knight JoAnn. We need more volunteers tokeep this important tradition going! Interested in being an upcoming chef? Contact Miguel Sabral (916-397-1728) orJoe Romanazzi (916-965-4633). He said to them, “Come away byyourselves to a deserted place and rest a while”. People werecoming and going in great numbers, and they had no opportunityeven to eat. So they went off in the boat by themselves to a desertedplace. People saw them leaving and many came to know about it. They hastenedthere on foot from all the towns and arrived at the place before them. When hedisembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, forthey were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them manythings. Conducted at the state fairgrounds, CalExpo, this one-stop, three-day event providedthe proverbial "three hots and a cot" to morethan 200 Veterans as a temporary respite fromliving on the streets. Equally important was thesense of companionship and camaraderie by thevolunteers (all of whom are Veteransthemselves) afforded to the 200 HomelessVeterans.Led by Deputy Grand Knight Miguel Sabral(US Army), Brother Knights Gene Gobbo (US AirForce), Joe Kievernagel (US Navy), KenMacdonald (US Air Force), and Daniel Aseltine(US Army) provided more than 50 hours ofservice in such areas as charge of quarters, registration, clothing distribution, andsecurity. The Homeless Veterans received free support in key areas such aswarm clothing; medical and dental care; housing referrals; mental healthassistance; employment counseling; legalaid; Social Security benefits; andVeterans benefits. For the past several years, Council4970 has actively participated in theannual Sacramento Stand Down duringthe month of August. Our Brother Knightswho volunteered sought to give HomelessVeterans a hand up, not a hand out. Itwas the volunteers' way of recognizingthose men and women who answeredtheir country's call to duty, but who havenot always managed to benefit from thefull measure of their military service. Asolemn, concluding comment was madeby Deputy Grand Knight MiguelSabral: "the event was conducted withhonor."Please contact Brother Daniel Aseltine (dan.aseltine@gmail.com) for furtherinformation about volunteer opportunities at two upcoming Stand Downs forHomeless Veterans. It is important to note that non-Veterans are also encouragedto volunteer:Stand Down October 16-18, 2018 in DixonStand Up for Homeless Veterans Saturday, October 13 Elks Lodge #6 6446 Riverside Blvd Sacramento.BBQ, Auction, Door Prizes, https//vetstock2018.evenbrite.comA recent study found that the average golfer walks about 900 miles a year.Another study found golfers drink, on average, 22 gallons of alcohol a year, which means, on average, golfers getabout 41 miles to the gallon. Kind of makes you proud. I almost feel like a hybrid.

October 2018CHARITY – UNITY – FRATERNITY - PATRIOTISMPage 4THE TROUBLE TREEAuthor UnknownI hired a plumber to help me restore an old farmhouse, and, after he had just finished a rough first day on the job, a flattire made him lose an hour of work, his electric drill quit and his ancient one-ton truck refused to start. While I drove him home, he sat in stony silence. On arriving, he invited me in to meet his family. As we walked toward thefront door, he paused briefly at a small tree, touching the tips of the branches with both hands. When opening the door he underwent an amazing transformation. His face was wreathed in smiles and he hugged histwo small children and gave his wife a kiss. Afterward he walked me to the car. We passed the tree and my curiosity gotthe better of me. I asked him about what I had seen him do earlier.Oh, that's my trouble tree, he replied. I know I can't help having troubles on the job, but one thing's for sure, those troublesdon't belong in the house with my wife and the children. So, I just hang them up on the tree every night when I comehome and ask God to take care of them. Then in the morning I pick them up again. Funny thing is, he smiled, when Icome out in the morning to pick 'em up, there aren't nearly as many as I remember hanging up the night before.WIDOWS MASS AND LUNCHEON 2018Ken Macdonald, Memorial ChairmanCouncil 4970 is very pleased to host a Memorial Mass and Luncheon for the widows of ourBrother Knights who have contributed so much in the service of others. I was on a train trip to Nebraska to accompany mythwife to her 50 High School Reunion in a small city west of Omaha. The trainride was unique, challenging, andwonderful! The trip was actually threefold in purpose: 1) attend reunionactivities, 2) visit her home town, especially the Labor Day parade, and3) a spiritual retreat to the BenedictineRetreat Center and the Gretna HolyFamily shrine. During the parade I sawa welcome sight. There was a KofC Council 2716 float (right) and a Pro-Life float(left). Wherever we go, there the Knight are! It was good to see.TOP TWELVE ACTUAL COMPLAINTS RECEIVED FROM DISSATISFIED VACATIONCUSTOMERS1. "On my holiday to Goa in India, I was disgusted to find that almost every restaurant served curry.
