EPPP CANDIDATE HANDBOOK:THE EXAMINATION FOR PROFESSIONAL PRACTICEIN PSYCHOLOGY (EPPP)INTRODUCTIONThe Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology(EPPP) is developed and owned by the Association ofState and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB). The EPPPis provided to state and provincial boards of psychology toassist them in their evaluation of the qualifications ofapplicants for licensure and certification. Thisstandardized knowledge-based examination isconstructed by ASPPB with the assistance of its testvendor, Pearson VUE. The EPPP is continuouslyadministered in a computerized delivery format throughthe Pearson VUE network of computer testing centers.State and provincial psychology boards acting collectivelythrough ASPPB provide support for the testing format.Pearson VUE maintains a network of more than 275Pearson Professional Centers (PPCs) in the United Statesand Canada in order to provide access to computer-basedtesting (CBT) for candidates. The resources of individual psychologists, ASPPB and itstest vendor are used in the ongoing development of andimprovements to the EPPP. These combined resources aregreater than those available to any individual psychologylicensing. The EPPP is only one part of the evaluationprocedures used by state and provincial boards todetermine candidates’ readiness to practice theprofession of psychology. Most boards supplement theEPPP with other requirements and/or assessmentprocedures. The EPPP is intended to evaluate theknowledge that the most recent practice analysis hasdetermined as foundational to the competent practice ofpsychology. Most candidates taking the EPPP haveobtained a doctoral degree in psychology, a year of predoctoral supervised experience and appropriatepostdoctoral experience. Candidates are expected to haveacquired a broad basic knowledge of psychology, regardless of individual areas of concentration. Thisknowledge, and the candidate’s ability to apply it, areassessed through the candidate’s responses to objective,multiple-choice questions that are representative of thefield at large. The average pass-rate for doctoral levelcandidates who are taking the exam for the first timeexceeds 80% in the most recent sample years.CONTENT OF THE EPPPThe EPPP covers eight content areas: biological bases ofbehavior; cognitive-affective bases of behavior; socialand cultural bases of behavior; growth and lifespandevelopment; assessment and diagnosis; treatment, intervention, prevention and supervision; researchmethods and statistics; and ethical, legal, and professional issues. The percentage of exam questions foreach of the eight content areas is determined through aPractice Analysis. Those percentages, and the specificsub-areas for each domain, make up the Test Specifications, which are provided in Appendix A. SampleEPPP-type questions are provided in Appendix B.Each form of the EPPP contains 225 items, of which 175are scored and 50 are pretest items. The pretest itemsdo not count in a candidate’s final score. Each item hasfour possible responses, only one of which is the correctanswer. Please note: The French version of the EPPP (FEPPP) is availableonly to individuals applying for licensure in ajurisdiction that legally requires the availability of aFrench version of the EPPP.

APPLYING TO TAKE THE EPPPAlthough the procedures for applying to sit for the EPPPvary somewhat by jurisdiction, the following representcommonalities across jurisdictions.FIRST STEPSRegardless of the jurisdiction, in order to sit for theEPPP, individuals seeking licensure must first apply forlicensure to the licensing authority in the state, province or territory in which they wish to be licensed. The licensing authority reviews applicants’ credentialsand determines if they meet the requirementsestablished in the laws of the state, province orterritory.Candidates who meet their licensing authorities’requirements will be pre-approved by the board to takethe EPPP. The board will enter the candidate’sidentifying information into an online EPPP registrationsystem that will enable the candidate to logon andverify her/his account, and that gives access to theapplication materials. Candidates will be sent twoconsecutive emails, the 1st advising them that theirlicensing authority has uploaded their information intothe system, and the 2nd with information for them toverify their account and begin the registration process. Candidates will not be able to log into theregistration system until their licensing authority hasuploaded their information. Candidates must contacttheir board to advise that they are ready to test andneed to be uploaded to the EPPP registration system. Once candidates receive those 1st emails they have90 days to verify their account. This does not mean thatthe EPPP must be taken within 3 months of receivingthe emails, but rather, the account must be verified inthat first 3 months. If a candidate fails to verify his orher account within that time frame, thelicensing authority will have to re-upload thecandidate’s information. The first and last name in the registration systemmust match the name on the two forms of identificationthat candidates will be required to present whenchecking-in at the testing center. After candidates have verified their account, they will berequired to read and acknowledge their review of theCandidate Acknowledgment Statement.AUTHORIZATION TO TESTAUTHORIZATION TO TAKE PRACTICE EXAMSThe Candidate Acknowledgment Statement containsimportant rules for taking the EPPP and should be readin its entirety before acknowledging that it has beenread. At that point, candidates are eligible to take the EPPP Practice Examsand complete the EPPP Application Form to take theEPPP.AUTHORIZATION TO TAKE THE EPPPThe EPPP Application Form is Step 2 of the 2-partregistration process, and completion of the second step, the EPPP Application Form, will generate the EPPPAuthorization to Test email. When the EPPP Application Form has been completed, candidates will be able to move forward and scheduletheir exam. Once in the Pearson VUE system, candidatescan pay for/schedule Practice Exams, pay the EPPP fee, schedule their EPPP appointment, and pay the testcenter appointment fee.
