Includes instruction in theidentification, evaluation, and treatment of athletic injuries and illnesses;first aid and emergency care; therapeutic exercise; anatomy andphysiology; exercise physiology; kinesiology and biomechanics; nutrition;sports psychology; personal and community health; knowledge of varioussports and their biomechanical and physiological demands; andapplicable professional standards and regulations.The CSU Degree Program Code (based on old HEGIS codes) for theMasters of Science in Athletic Training is 08375 and the IPES 2010 CIPCode is 51.0913.3. Program Overview and Rationalea. Provide a brief descriptive overview of the program citing its 1) purpose andstrengths, 2) fit with the institutional mission or institutional learningoutcomes, and 3) the compelling reasons for offering the program at this time.The purpose of this program is to prepare healthcare professionals whocollaborate with physicians to optimize activity and participation of patientsand clients. Athletic Training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, andintervention of emergency, acute and chronic medical conditions involvingimpairment, functional limitations, and disabilities. Athletic trainers are anecessary and recognized component of the health care team, with thepotential to reach underserved communities like urban high school students,and the ability to help affect positive health changes to limit the effects oflong term disease and disability later in life. Athletic Training is recognized bythe American Medical Association (AMA) as a healthcare profession.While in this program the content knowledge and clinical skills focus onprevention and health promotion, acute care of injury and illness, evidencebased practice, clinical examination and diagnosis, therapeutic interventions,professional development, psychosocial strategies and referral,biomechanics, epidemiology, exercise physiology, human anatomy,pathophysiology, public health, research design, statistics, nutrition; health

MSAT – CSULB7care administration, knowledge of demands for the physically active andsports, and applicable professional development and responsibility.The program and student learning outcomes develop 1) effectivecommunication, 2) civic responsibility and ethical practice, 3) problem solvingand research skills, 4) information literacy, 5) application of knowledge andskill to clinical practice, and 6) ability to immediately join the workforce asindependent clinicians, with autonomous practice. Several features of theprogram will draw candidates that will apply and ultimately enroll: 1)Comprehensive integration of scholarly and creative activities, and researchskills throughout the curriculum that develops and refines the clinician for anevidence-based practice approach to patient outcomes; 2) CSULB is a publicinstitution recognized for its best value in public education that combineshigh quality education and opportunities with an economic value; 3) CSULB isone of the most ethnically and culturally diverse campuses in the nationserving and awarding degrees to minorities; and 4) the accomplishments ofits students and faculty in the athletic training discipline, department,college, and university.The CSULB Mission Statement:California State University, Long Beach is a diverse, studentcentered, globally-engaged public university committed to providinghighly-valued undergraduate and graduate educational opportunitiesthrough superior teaching, research, creative activity and service for thepeople of California and the world.The above university mission statement focuses on its academic purpose thatstudents are graduating with a highly valued degree to be successful andactive participants in the ever changing global world. The institutionallearning outcomes are: oral communications, written communications,quantitative reasoning critical thinking, civic responsibility, diversity,disciplinary/professional competencies, collaborative problem solving inresearch/creative activities, and information literacy. The Athletic Trainingprogram has carefully reviewed the expected outcomes of the institution andof WASC in comparison to knowledge and skill competencies of theprofessional discipline. It developed and refined the student’s and program’soutcomes for a strong interconnection, for example, oral and/or written classpresentations progressing to similar disciplinary presentations at professionalclinical symposiums, program experiences with active research and/or theculminating thesis experience, and clinical experiences with populations with

MSAT – CSULB8varied activity and health profiles that are diverse in cultural, ethnicity, andage. Overall, the student learning and program outcomes align withinstitutional learning outcomes and disciplinary outcomes.Justification: As stated previously, the Athletic Trainer is recognized as ahealthcare provider by the American Medical Association. As a health careprofessional the Athletic Trainers in higher education and the health caresystem provide clinical services in prevention, emergency care, clinicaldiagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medicalconditions. In the healthcare industry, healthcare professional credentialsstandardize the level of education and ability to provide care. Theseprofessional credentials fall into the categories of professional degree oradvanced academic degree (master’s or doctorate) or advanced education oradvanced practice provider. The athletic trainers’ scope of practice and rolecontinues professionally evolve in the health care industry and within theinterprofessional health care team. The athletic trainers’ educationalpreparation must reflect the credentialing standards expected for the healthcare industry for continued professional acceptance and recognition in theseevolving environments.Professional degree programs in Athletic Training are accredited by theCommission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). TheCSULB Athletic Training Program has been a leader in athletic trainingeducation since 1971. Its curriculum has evolved over time to the currentBachelor of Science in Athletic Training professional degree which is currentlyaccredited by CAATE. Athletic Training continues to professionally evolve inthe healthcare industry and must reflect the healthcare industry’s credentialstandards and expectations.As a result of this healthcare industry expectation and professional evolution,CAATE revised its Accreditation Standard 2 to reflect inclusion of thefollowing language: CAATE accredited professional athletic training programsmust result in the granting of a master’s in Athletic Training. The programmust be identified as an academic athletic training degree in institutionalacademic publications. The degree must appear on the official transcriptsimilar to normal designations for other degrees at the institution. Pending approvals at all appropriate levels ofthe CSULB and CSU, the CSULB Athletic Training Program projectsimplementation of the Masters of Science Athletic Training in fall 2020 withtransition at the time of its CAATE self-study submission on July 1, 2020 andthe site visit in AY 2020-2021 for reaccreditation.b. Provide the proposed catalog description. The description should include:1. a narrative description of the programMaster of Science in Athletic TrainingThe Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) program preparesindividuals for a career as a certified athletic trainer. Athletic trainers(ATs) are health care professionals who collaborate with physicians tooptimize activity and participation of patients and clients. Theservices provided are preventative services, emergency care, clinicaldiagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries andmedical conditions. Athletic Training is recognized by the AmericanMedical Association as a healthcare profession. The Master of Science inAthletic Training (MSAT) is a full-time, cohort-model program.The Master of Science in Athletic Training program is open to all collegegraduates who have met prerequisite requirements and demonstratesufficient preparation, potential for professional education and ability toperform the essential functions needed to practice as an athletic traineras determined by athletic training faculty review of admissiondocuments.Accreditation: The Athletic Training Program is accredited by theCommission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE),6850 Austin Center Blvd., Suite 100 Austin, TX 78731-3184; P: 512-7339700, TOLL FREE: 844-GO-CAATE (844-462-2283).The CSULB Athletic Training Program CAATE accreditation is for theundergraduate program for academic years 2011-2020. It is projected that MSAT will begin in Fall 2020. The next CAATEcomprehensive accreditation review will occur in academic year 20202021.
