Grass & Grain, July 22, 2008Kansas HayMarket ReportGround alfalfa movement: Southwest/South CentralTonnage: 10,912/4,200 Last week: 11,514/3,514 Lastyear: 10,809/3,112 Hay trade is moderate. Demand isstrong for dairy alfalfa and grinding alfalfa, moderate foralfalfa pellets, prairie hay and stock cow quality hay. Therestraining order will remain in place blocking livestockproducers from haying and grazing CRP under a special USDA program. If any haying and grazing is allowed in the coming weeks it will be with tighter restrictions. With alfalfa acres and yields down, total production for the year is likely to be 20 to 25 percent, maybeas high as third less than normal. Prairie hay producersare beginning the haying season with rain and showersslowing progress and damaging hay. The forecast is formostly hot and dry, that should help with cutting, curingand baling. Yields are reported lighter than expectedand quality good when the weather allows.
