TARGET AUDIENCERUSK CONCUSSION REHABILITATION SYMPOSIUM:AN INTERPROFESSIONAL &EVIDENCE-BASED APPROACHFOR THERAPISTS & NURSESOctober 22 23, 2016NYU Langone Medical Center550 First Ave, NY, NY 10016OVERVIEWResearch has shown that approximately80-85% of concussions resolve completely within 7-10 days in the adult population, with an increased time to recoveryin the pediatric population. For the 1520% of patients with a protracted recovery, a patient-centered multidisciplinaryapproach to care is essential to effectiverecovery. Understanding the composition of the team and the role of each teammember is critical to successful rehabilitation for patients with persisting symptoms. This 1 ½ day conference offers aunique opportunity for all rehabilitationprofessionals to attend the same talks onday one and to then meet by discipline, for workshops on day two. The topics ofvision, vestibular, cervical, cognitive, andspeech deficits will be described and theevidence behind the current practiceswithin each discipline. The challengesof working with families and returningchildren to school will be discussed. Therole of the social worker and vocationaltherapist will be presented as some patients with persisting symptoms requirethe intervention of these professionals. The conference will address sports andnon-sports related concussions, as manyconcussions occur due to falls, motorvehicle accidents, and assaults. Day twowill allow for individual disciplines to at-tend workshops to delve deeper into theevaluation and treatment tools for eachrespective discipline. The workshopswill expand upon the didactics and offerinteractive hands-on experience for theevaluation and treatment tools to beused in the clinic so attendees may applywhat is learned when returning to theirpractices. The workshops will be in theareas of physical therapy (exertion, vestibular and cervical), occupational therapy ( vision rehabilitation), psychology, and nursing. This entry level course willprovide a strong foundation from whichto build your practice in workingwith patients with concussion. Content will bepresented via didacticlectures, case presentations, Q&A sessionsand hands on experience. Therapists mayopt to attend only dayone or day one andtwo. Nurses mayopt to attend Dayone and two oronly day two. This activity is targeted to nurses, occupational therapists, occupational therapist assistants, physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, psychologists, and speech language pathologists.LEARNING OBJECTIVESAt the completion of Day One of thiscourse, the participant should be able to:1.
