Smith UniversityDivision of Government Sponsored Programs and Research (GSPAR)Welcome colleagues, friends, faculty and staff to the 2019 Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) campus-wide Undergraduate Research WeekCelebration! This event is cosponsored by the Smith Institute for Applied Research and the McNair Scholars Program in collaboration with the QEPCommittee and the Psychology Department. The Celebration is designed to highlight scholarly research that faculty and students have engaged inthis past year across disciplines in our school and colleges. The Undergraduate Research Week Celebration includes poster sessions, oral sessions, a QEP FacultyResearch Symposium, the Annual Central Carolina Conference in Psychology, faculty presentations, Makerspace activities and a Research Speed Mixer Finale.Faculty-mentored student research is the cornerstone of knowledge creation and transmission for student researchers in all disciplines. There is a joy in being anintellect who engages with others to share a commitment and address problems that face our local and global communities through knowledge and understanding.Through involvement with research, our undergraduate students are also learning and practicing essential research skills such as critical thinking, teamwork,networking and leadership that prepares them for careers in the workplace or to attend graduate school.JCSU is dedicated to preparing our students to be tomorrow’s leaders, innovators, intellectuals, professionals, and global citizens. Enabling students to experiencethe discovery of creativity associated with research is a critical way that we achieve this. As is clear from the work being shared, participating in cutting-edgeresearch allows the opportunity to make significant contributions to the creation of knowledge, development of technology, understanding complex systems, andimprovement of communities and quality of life.Congratulations to all student presenters on your accomplishments! Smith UniversityDescription of ActivitiesUndergraduate Research Celebration Kick-OffThe undergraduate research celebration kick-off marks the commencement of a week of excitement and high energy to engender a sense ofbelonging, networking, and camaraderie among faculty/staff, students, and visitors regarding undergraduate research at JCSU. Attendees willenjoy snacks, music, prizes, and discussions (one-on-one and group) to create momentum for the week. The campus community will assembleto celebrate achievements in scholarship and research.Research Poster CompetitionThe research poster competition provides an opportunity for JCSU students who represent various academic disciplines to highlight and presenttheir research poster to demonstrate their contribution to JCSU’s Quality Enhancement Plan– Cultivating a Culture and Curriculum forUndergraduate Research. Mystery judges will evaluate each presentation/poster to determine 1st prize ( 1000), 2nd prize ( 500) and 3rd prize( 325) winners. Research posters will be featured in Carnegie Hall, McNair Multipurpose Research Hub, and James B. Duke Library.2nd Annual Symposium on the Curriculum & Pedagogy of Undergraduate Research (SOPCUR)Coordinated by JCSU’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) Committee, SOPCUR provides an opportunity for JCSU faculty who representvarious academic disciplines to highlight and present their research posters and/or oral presentations on the integration of research in theclassroom. Presentations will demonstrate faculty’s contributions to JCSU’s Quality Enhancement Plan- Cultivating a Culture and Curriculumfor Undergraduate Research. Mystery judges will evaluate each oral and poster presentation to determine winners of professional developmentstipends in the amount of 700 and 350.Student Research Resource Mash-UpThe Student Research Resource Mash-Up provides an opportunity for students to interact with support staff at JCSU’s James. B Duke Libraryand learn more about free resources to help with their research. Students will be given a first-hand demonstration of the library’s new 3-Dprinting tools, get information on how to access Lynda, an online learning tool provided through Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, and learnmore about the new innovative Makerspace Studio.28th Annual Central Carolinas Conference in Psychology (CCCP)CCCP is hosted by the Departments of Psychology at Johnson C. Smith University , Belmont Abbey College, Queens University of Charlotte,and The University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC). The purpose of this conference is to provide undergraduates in psychology withthe opportunity to present their research in front of their peers and faculty in a professional yet friendly setting. An alumni panel will share theirexperience and answer questions about jobs and graduate school opportunities.Research Mixer FinaleAs a roundtable discussion, the Research Speed Mixer finale is an activity for students to interact with faculty and staff who can provide and/orsupport research mentoring, fellowship, and internship opportunities. Participants will also be able to engage with peers who present researchposters at Central Carolinas Conference in Psychology.
