2019 APA Annual ConventionAugust 8 – 11PROGRAM BOOKChicago, IL

Welcome to Chicago! We are pleased to present a robust and pluralistic program that represents the many interests forthe Society. Our theme this year was to highlight things have been “othered” in psychology andpsychoanalysis. In line with this we have programming that combines research with clinicalapplications. We have advocacy and psychoanalysis in education. We’re happy to offerprogramming for and by graduate students and we have many ways to engage socially forgraduate students, early career professionals, and social events with other divisions on themessuch as social justice. Now let’s talk about what to do beyond the conference programming! There is no city in theworld with as much notable modern architecture as Chicago and the best place to appreciate it isfrom the river that flows through downtown. By far, the most recommended tourist activity is ariver-boat architecture tour. Book through the Chicago Architecture Foundation. When you’redone with the boat tour, walk along the Riverwalk (think San Antonio meets the High Line), stopand have a glass of wine while locals moor their boats and join you. Nearby, the Art Institute ofChicago was recently named the #1 museum in the world by TripAdvisor and has recently hadtheir comprehensive impressionist and modern collections bolstered with a massive privatedonation of contemporary art. In August, there will be exhibits dedicated to the work of ÉdouardManet as well as to the Anti-Apartheid Posters of the Medu Art Ensemble in 1970s South Africa.Chicago is also home to the country’s most vibrant theater. There are tickets to Hamiltonavailable! Check the website Theatre in Chicago for the top rated plays in town at any givenmoment. The Goodman, Steppenwolf, and Chicago Shakespeare Theater are the top houses intown. We are the home of Improv comedy, with most of the cast of Saturday Night Live, from itsinception, being discovered at local clubs here. The two most well-established venues are I/Oand The Second City. When it comes to food, there are too many great restaurants to name, with food from all over the world, so pull out yourMichelin guide and let them help you. If you have time for shopping, there is high end shoppingalong the beautiful Magnificent Mile on Michigan Avenue and on Oak Street. If you’d like to get alittle further off the beaten path and into the heart of real Chicago, we recommend visiting theNational Museum of Mexican Art in the Pilsen neighborhood and then walk a few blocks toCarintas Uruapan for the best carnitas you’ll ever have. Finally, another thing that Chicago isknown for is blues and jazz. For blues, you’ll want to get to Kingston Mines in Lincoln Park andfor jazz, you can’t do better than former speakeasy The Green Mill in Uptown.Choose Chicago is the official office of tourism. Check out their site for the latest happeningsaround town! https://www.choosechicago.com/There is something for everyone, and too muchto get done in one visit, but we hope you’ll attend as much programming as possible and take inas much of Chicago as you can. We’re looking forward to seeing you in August!SincerelyBrian Brown & Colin Ennis, Division 39 Co-Chairs, APA 2019

To be held at the Home2 Suites Hotel McCormick Place – Room Commodore/Hudson – 3rd FloorDescription: This year our Convention programming includes panels from presenters affiliated with Biola University, which has APAaccredited doctoral programs. Concerns were raised about this inclusion as Biola has policies that could result in disciplinary action forstudents who engage in sexual activity outside the marriage of a husband and a wife. The panels are not related to these policies. However, we are concerned that such policies have the potential to supersede the usual student protections afforded in the Standards ofAccreditation (SoA). Rather than exclude presenters from Biola from presenting, SPPP affirms the importance of engaging in dialogue, while addressing our concerns which go beyond a single institution. We are offering a space for anyone who would like to discuss theirconcerns about the matter of such programs' standing within APA with much of the Board of Directors present. The Society of Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic PsychologyDivision 39Welcome Reception5:00 pm to 6:50 pmGrand Hyatt McCormick PlaceProgram – Sunday, August 11TimeTitle8:00 am to 9:50 amSkill Building Session (A): Working with Youth in aTherapeutic Day School-Understanding TraumaRe-EnactmentCo-Chairs: Patricia Taglione, PsyD, Allendale Association, Lake Villa, ILSandra Clavelli, PsyD, Allendale Association, Lake Villa, IL10:00 am to 11:50 amSymposium (A): Adult Attachment-EmpiricalApplications to Social and Clinical ProcessesRoomMcCormick PlRm W183c16McCormick PlRm W178a20, 43Chair: Kevin B.
