Editor's DeskInnovation as an Attitudeobsolete if they do not remain attuned to industryshifts and adapt accordingly.Since its founding in 1983, Advantech hasfocused on embedded and automation solutionsinstead of personal computers and mobile devices, and on branding instead of original equipmentmanufact ur ing. Advantech has establishednumerous independent marketing and researchteams for specific products, regardless of marketsize. At Advantech, innovation is the enginethat drives the company’s consistent internalevolution in response to external market changes.Advantech has also invested substantial resourcesinto encouraging innovation through learningand talent cultivation. Corporate initiatives thatinclude establishing the TiC100 Technolog yInnovation Competition, building the IMA Xinnovat ion plat for m, and promot ing ma kerculture demonstrate Advantech’s commitment toinnovation.Advantech also inspires further innovationin diverse sectors by forming strategic alliancesa nd col labor at i n g w it h bu si ness pa r t ner sworldwide. The digital signage application storyon page 20 of this MyAdvantech issue providesa great example of cross-industry innovationinspiration. The world-renowned hair and beautybra nd L’Oréa l adopted Adva ntech’s d ig ita lsignage solutions and professional centralizedmonitoring systems in an effort to establish anefficient digital communication channel. Throughthat application project, Advantech discoveredthat demands for digital signage are no longerrestricted to any specific industry or trade.Instead, rapid advancements in cloud computinghave transformed digital signage into intelligentplatforms for customer interaction. In 2016, what strategies should be adoptedfor the upcoming year? As industry undergoesunprecedented change, what challenges mightemerge amid the maker revolution? Although thefuture is unpredictable, every opportunity thatarises should be seized. As Steve Jobs once said,“The people who are crazy enough to think theycan change the world, are the ones who do.” 5MyAdvantechT h e M a k e r M o v e m e nt i s a n e m e r g i n gglobal trend. Many governments and renownedenterprises recognize “maker culture” as a criticalconcept with the potential to spark significantinnovation in the future. In recent years, makerculture has swept across Taiwan, motivatingyounger generations to join the Maker Movementand take action to change Taiwan.Ma ker c u lt u r e is ga r ner i n g i ncr ea si n gattention and investment because of the importantchallenges facing industry and manufacturers. Therise of the Internet of Things (IoT) has precipitateda global industrial transformation that impacts allindustrial processes and operations. Maker cultureis set to be a key driver of the next industrialrevolution - a revolution that will take place notin a laboratory or company, but in the houses ofmillions of ordinary people. The Maker Movement constitutes a quantumleap in the history of industry. In the past, mostinnovation and R&D programs required sizableenterprise investment combined with a touch ofgenius from inspirational inventors. By contrast, nowadays, with technolog y eliminating thebarriers to market entry, any person with a 3Dprinter, 3D scanner, CAD design and engineeringsoftware, and laser cutting machine can becomean industrialist. Leveraging a solid foundation inIT manufacturing, industries in Taiwan can assistand inspire more makers to develop innovationsand start businesses. This innovation momentumis vital for driving industrial upgrades andtransformation that can lead Taiwan toward abrighter future.Despite the current groundswell of interest, maker culture is not a recent idea or trend. Thewell-known fact that Steve Jobs, founder of AppleInc., built the first generation of desktop computersin a garage illustrates the concept behind theMaker Movement. However, maker culture isnothing new for Advantech. Indeed, at Advantech, innovation is understood as an attitude ratherthan a system. All businesses, especially thosein the ICT industry, which typically experiencesa paradigm shift every 15 years, risk becoming
