INTERNATIONAL APPLICATIONFOR ADMISSION AND SCHOLARSHIPAN INTRODUCTIONBerea College, founded in 1855, is a racially integrated, coeducational liberal arts college.Berea’s motto, “God has made of one blood all peoples of the earth” reflects the conviction ofBerea founder and ardent abolitionist, John G. Fee. Berea’s spiritual foundations are rooted inthe Christian faith, but Berea welcomes people of all faiths, or no faith at all, to study in adiverse campus setting. Berea is committed to providing a high-quality education for highachieving students with limited financial resources.Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Berea seeks to maintain in itsprogram the liberal arts tradition which stresses free inquiry and, in addition to pursuit ofknowledge within a chosen academic discipline, provides for a broad and deep generaleducation experience which promotes life-long learning. Berea invites students to a campuswhich is based on the equality of all people regardless of race, class, age, religion, sexualorientation, or nationality. Berea College expects its students to respect the dignity and rightsof all people. As an important part of campus life, all Berea students participate in a work-learning program.Through this program, the College wishes to demonstrate the dignity of labor, accomplishessential campus work, and provide students with a means of earning wages to assist withtheir educational and personal expenses. First-year students can expect to earn approximately 2,000 during the nine-month academic year.Berea College is located in Berea, Kentucky, a small community of approximately 14,000residents, located 40 miles south of Lexington, Kentucky. The temperature ranges from 15 to 32degrees Celsius, (60 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit) in the summer and -6 to 4 degrees Celsius (20to 40 degrees Fahrenheit) in the winter, although at times it gets colder. Academics and Costs InfoThe first two years of study include coursework in our General Studies program, which includes anarray of required studies in areas such as Mathematics, Social Sciences, Sciences, and Humanities. The final two years are generally devoted to studies in the major area of study. It is expected thatall Berea College students will graduate within eight regular terms of attendance (four years). The scholarship from Berea College only applies while a student is enrolled at Berea. If youplan to continue your studies in the United States after graduation from Berea, you will need toobtain an adjustment to your VISA and arrange for financial aid with the graduate orprofessional institution that you will be attending. Because of this, international students are notable to study engineering at Berea or participate in the College’s dual degree 3/2 EngineeringProgram. The Nursing program has higher English proficiency requirements (TOEFL iBT 83,with a 26 on the spoken section). If admitted to Berea with lower English proficiency, studentswill not be admitted to the major until the required scores are achieved. Students will be giventhe opportunity to retest, however, students failing to meet the TOEFL iBT requirement by thefirst day of their third term of enrollment at Berea are ineligible to pursue the Nursing major.
