Theseacademic programs are administeredby The Undergraduate School and TheGraduate School. The Undergraduate SchoolThe mission of The UndergraduateSchool at University of MarylandUniversity College is to provide openaccess to quality undergraduate educational opportunities to women and menaround the world, including residents ofthe state of Maryland, members of theU.S. Armed Services, and national andinternational students pursuing a university education on-site and online. Theuniversity seeks to produce graduateswho are well prepared to be responsiblecitizens in a global society, as well aseffective participants in the complex,fast-changing world of work.The Undergraduate School is committed to meeting undergraduate students’needs for lifelong learning by providinginnovative delivery of high-quality educational programs, ensuring substantiveand relevant curricula, and recognizingthe value of experiential learning. Atthe undergraduate level, UMUC offersthe Associate of Arts (available onlyto active-duty military personnel andother special populations), the Bachelorof Arts, the Bachelor of Science, theBachelor of Science in Nursing, andthe Bachelor of Technical and Professional Studies degrees, as well as fiveundergraduate certificates. BPREPARING CITIZENS FORTHE 21ST CENTURYUMUC prepares graduates to beeffective professionals and citizensin their organizations, communities,and families. The university values thecontributions of both a broad-basededucation and specific disciplines tothe undergraduate experience and thusincorporates cross-curricular contextand analytical approaches in all programs to complement practice.Instruction and curricula at UMUCare based on the belief that certainabilities are the hallmarks of successfullearning. UMUC expects students todemonstrate knowledge and skillsnot only in the major areas of studybut also in critical analysis, reasoning,and problem solving; diverse culturesand historical periods; the use of technology; key concepts and principlesof the natural, social, and behavioralsciences; information literacy; effectivewriting and communication; mathematical and quantitative reasoning; and theapplication of frameworks for ethicaldecision making. These hallmarks ofa UMUC undergraduate education areinstilled through a broad foundation ingeneral education and integrated intoa strong and focused major area ofstudy. Students’ mastery of these abilities is planned and assessed throughout their program of study.General education coursework canprovide the lens through which students not only learn about differentacademic disciplines and how they seethe world but also experience practicalapplications of foundational skills andconcepts and make connections amongdifferent approaches and applications.UMUC’s minimum requirements forgeneral education coursework conformto state of Maryland requirements andare broadly accommodating of studentinterests and transfer credit. However,specific courses are recommended tofulfill general education requirementswhere students have not yet done so.Because technology affects our worldand the ways in which we understandit at every level, The UndergraduateSchool has developed courses thatrevolve around the theme of technological transformations—the ability of innovative tools and processes to changethe application of knowledge—for itsrecommendations. These courses aredesigned to help students acquire agrounding in the arts, humanities, andsciences by studying and applying theprinciples of these disciplines throughconcrete cases, examples, and topicscentered around this theme.For their core studies, students maychoose one of 32 majors from a widevariety of academic fields, includingbusiness administration, cybersecurity,humanities, communication studies, biotechnology, social science, legal studies,environmental management, and information systems management. Academicminors are available in 46 differentareas. All the majors and minors havebeen reviewed and revised in consultation with faculty, employers, professionaland educational organizations, and otherexperts in the field. These academicprograms prepare students for the modern workplace and also help workingstudents put their current knowledgeinto a broader context.Recognizing the importance of lifelonglearning, UMUC also offers severalundergraduate certificatesB of value inthe workplace for career advancement.SERVING ADULT STUDENTSUMUC welcomes all students and helpsthem achieve their educational goalsbut has a special focus on the needs ofadult students in the workforce. In 2011,more than 70 percent of UMUC undergraduates worked full-time, and nearlyhalf were working parents. Currently,the median age for stateside undergraduate students is 31 years old.In recognition of the diverse educational goals and aspirations of itsstudents, the university uses a varietyof strategies to ensure access andfacilitate degree completion. Knowingthat adult students bring experience aswell as a willingness to learn, UMUCacknowledges the value of that experience by incorporating the assessmentof nontraditional learning in the evaluation of students. The Undergraduate School Continued . . .from multiple sources, UMUC offersa number of innovative credit optionsthat recognize the learning achievedthrough work and life experience andaccelerate progress toward the degree.These options (described on pp. 213–15)include Workplace Learning, whichoffers credit for new learning in theworkplace, and Prior Learning, whichoffers credit for college-level learningacquired through previous work or lifeexperience. UMUC also accepts creditfrom community college courseworkand a variety of other sources, including military service credit and credit byexamination (described on pp. 215–18).16 Maryland community colleges,enabling students to earn an associate’s degree at an allied communitycollege and finish a bachelor’s degreeby completing required coursework atUMUC. These alliances offer studentsa seamless transition between curricula through linked degree programs.Numerous locations in Maryland andthe Washington, D.C., area and onlinecourses enable students to completeassociate’s and bachelor’s degreesconveniently close to home. SpecialUMUC scholarships are also availablefor graduates from Maryland community colleges.UMUC understands the demands ofbalancing work, family, and study andresponds by offering undergraduateclasses at convenient locations andtimes, including evenings and weekends. Courses are also provided ininnovative formats, including accelerated sessions, online delivery, andhybrid courses that combine on-siteand online delivery.
