IntroductionWelcome to Parenting with Providence, in the time of COVID-19. The virushas presented challenges to families around the world unlike anything wehave ever experienced. The Children’s Hospital at Providence is here to careand support families throughout this pandemic.To keep you and your family safe, we have moved our classes to online, virtual,or a combination of both. You will still receive the same quality education,just from the comfort and safety of your home. We are so glad you arejoining us, and we hope we can offer your family some peace of mind as youjourney through this new time.Online classesOnline classes are self-paced, and you complete the class on your own time.The classes are interactive, and offer a combination of reading material, videos,hands-on activities, and more. You can move around and revisit pages youcompleted. You will receive access to the online class for nine months afterregistration is processed.Virtual classesVirtual classes and groups meet on a set day and time, with an instructorand other participants. Parenting with Providence is using the platformMicrosoft Teams for all our virtual classes. The virtual classes offer you theopportunity to learn in a live setting, get questions answered, and “meet”with other families. Childbirth EducationOur childbirth classes are taught by knowledgeable nurses and educatorswho are specially trained in the field of obstetrics. Online ClassesUnderstanding Birth e-ClassOur online childbirth class is ideal for parents needing a flexible class scheduledue to work schedules, time constraints, or medical conditions such as bedrest. Couples can take the course from different locations as well. It is alsoa great refresher class for those moms who have given birth before. Thiscourse is to be completed at your own pace on your own computer, tabletor smartphone.The eight-chapter program is an interactive, web-based class that uses videos,personal birth stories, animations, activities, and games to teach all theessential information parents need to know to prepare for their birth.Pre-registration is required. Once registration is verified,you will be emailed a login and password to UnderstandingBirth e-Class. Understanding Breastfeeding e-ClassThis e-Class is an interactive, web-based class that uses videos, animations,activities, games and more. It is ideal for families needing a flexible classschedule due to work schedules, time constraints, or medical conditions suchas bed rest. This course is to be completed at your own pace. Topics coveredinclude: How Breastfeeding Works, How to Breastfeed, When to Feed YourBaby, Getting Enough Milk, Breast Care, and Breastfeeding Lifestyle.Pre-registration is required. Virtual Childbirth and Baby ClassesChildbirth Four-Night SeriesThe four-night series meets virtually, twice a week for two weeks with oneof our certified childbirth instructors. The topics covered include the stagesof labor, breathing and relaxation techniques, anesthesia used in labor,variations in normal labor and birth, pushing techniques, what to expectafter delivery, basic breastfeeding preparation, and some basic baby care. Babysitting Class for Youths 6th-8th GradeThis class is designed for youths in 6th-8th grade wanting to learn the skillsnecessary to babysit young children. In-Person ClassInfant and Child CPREvery parent and caregiver should complete a CPR course. This AmericanHeart Association “Friends and Family” course will provide you with the skillsnecessary to perform Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation and choking protocolson an infant, child or adult. This course does not meet the requirements forBLS certification, and no card is issued.This is a hands-on class; we are limiting the class size to a maximum of fourparticipants. Participants and instructor are required to wear a face maskduring class and pass COVID-19 screening; stations will be set up 6 feetapart; each participant will have their own manikin, which is thoroughlycleaned and sanitized after use; we will hand sanitize often; and we willperform simulated rescue breaths on the manikins. Infant MassageThis introductory class teaches parents and caregivers the gentle art ofmassaging babies. Infant massage has been shown to help strengthen andregulate the respiratory, circulatory and gastrointestinal functions; oftenrelieving the discomforts of colic and gas. It also helps the baby relax andprovides an opportunity for parents to engage in loving communication withtheir baby. Regular infant massage encourages bonding between baby andcaregiver, and can lower postpartum depression in caregivers.This is a hands-on class; it is helpful to have a soft blanket or towel ready tomassage your baby on.100% natural oil to use on your baby is recommended (coconut, apricot kernel,olive oil are all good; mineral oil is not recommended).
