FOREWORDThe good news: Children who had a religiousupbringing are likely to be healthier and have ahigher degree of well-being in early adulthoodthan those who did not. The bad news:Conversations between Gen Z’rs are oftenpeppered with jokes of self-harm, anorexia andsuicide. These represent the realities of 21st centuryyouth culture. You have been called to provideministry to these precious ones and there is onlyone unquestionable remedy – the saving grace ofJesus Christ. And thankfully, youth and youngadult leaders in the Seventh-day Adventist churchare not alone in the quest to demonstrate the loveof God to new generations. We are part of#oneteam!North American Division leaders Tracy Wood,Vandeon Griffin and Armando Miranda havejoined voices to share examples from their ownjourneys about the power of #oneteam. Througha lens of experience representing 52 years of4 GRIFFIN, MIRANDA, WOOD

ministry, you will read their perspectives of howbiblical writers have influenced their lives andhow it can be applied to yours. Why should all of us take the #oneteamchallenge? Because the forces seeking to destroyour leadership and our young people are socompelling, we must fully engage in devoting ourminds to God’s Word. This 21-day journey ofreading scripture together, as written by yourcolleagues in ministry, will inspire and encourageyou. Some of us are called to be leaders where weare the lone champions for youth, where we facetests that sometimes seem insurmountable. Beassured, you are part of #oneteam, where othersunderstand and appreciate your faithfulness, andjoin you in the vital work of ministering to theyoung people God has entrusted to you.Debra Brill,VP for Church MinistriesNorth American Division of Seventh DayAdventist#ONETEAM CHALLENGE 5

Day 1WEIGHT LOSSDo you see what this means—all thesepioneers who blazed the way, all these veteranscheering us on? It means we’d better get on withit. Strip down, start running—and never quit! Noextra spiritual fat, no parasitic sins.Hebrews 12:1 MSGIt goes without saying that every year peoplemake all kinds of resolutions from eating healthier,to saving money for Christmas, to starting anexercise plan, to losing weight. I desperately tryto keep my resolutions to a minimum—eathealthier than the year before. It starts out great, but by the time I hit the third week of the year I amback to my old habits that eventually chase medown and send me back into an eating slump. It’snot a good thing nor is it a healthy thing to do, butit happens.6 GRIFFIN, MIRANDA, WOOD

The result of my challenging eating habits isweight gain. I pick up more than I ever hope toand add to it yearly. Isn’t that your story too? Wetend to start a project, a new habit, ritual, and thenin less than 30 days, we give up and throw in thetowel only to attempt the exact same thing a yearlater. However, I do believe I would do better withaccountability.Additionally, I am inspired byothers who have gone before me and haveaccomplished the same goal I am seeking toaccomplish. These stories give me hope that I too can makeit. I can experience weight loss and keep it off.Paul gives a motivating admonishment to thebeliever when it comes to weight loss. Paul says, many have already been successful in losingweight. We have pioneers that have run theChristian race and are winners. They have blazed a trail so that we may followin their footsteps and they are cheering us on tovictory! You can do this! Paul paints the pictureof an Olympic race taking place and in order for#ONETEAM CHALLENGE 7

the Christian to run the race and complete it theremust be weight loss. The Christian must lay asideanything that will prevent them from running therace successfully.Maybe the things that arepreventing us to run the Christian race are badhabits that are weighing us down. Maybe we havenegative attitudes that hold us back. Maybe weare involved in tasks in ministry that we are notcalled to be a part of; maybe we overraterelationships that inhibit our ability to moveforward. Whatever it is, we are charged by theWord to lay it aside and experience weight loss. This weight loss gives us the ability to make therace doable. We don’t have to be the first onesacross the line, the goal is to simply finish the race.I have heard from so many ministry leaderswhohaveexperiencedburnoutandthechallenges associated with burnout result ps becoming rocky and a spirit ofresentment towards God and anything remotelyspiritual. Simply because we are too weighty in8 GRIFFIN, MIRANDA, WOOD

our spiritual life. The things of this world will putso much unnecessary weight on us and for manyof us we can manage it but only for so long andthen it breaks us. Whatever is keeping you fromrunning this spiritual race in ministry, with Jesusalong with your family I charge you to lay it aside. The answer is not quitting but unloading theparasites and even the extra spiritual fat so thatreal weight loss can be accomplished, andultimately you finish the race and the kingdom isrealized. Weight loss is possible starting today!#ONETEAM Challenge How committed are you to living a healthierspiritual life?#ONETEAM CHALLENGE 9

Day 2IT’S DEFINITELY A LIMPAnd Elijah came near to all the people andsaid, “How long will you go limping between twodifferent opinions? If the LORD is God, followhim; but if Baal, then follow him.” And the peopledid not answer him a word.1 Kings 18:21 ESVI grew up in Joliet, IL. Most people when theyhear that and are familiar with the area, they referto it as prison country. Well it was home to anIllinois penal facility, but it was also very close toChicago, IL where many cool and somewhat hippeople hung out. Some of the people of Jolietwould go to Chicago to learn the cool game. Theywould return with a different kind of wardrobe, adifferent kind of hairstyle and a lot of the guyswould come back with a different type of walk. Itwas a walk that was distinct—a limp kind of walk#ONETEAM CHALLENGE 11

that was cool, very trendy and hip. It was funnynow that I look back on it.The guys walked with a limp, I must admit I triedit a time or two until my mother (bless her heart)corrected my cool walk, my hip walk—my limp!My mother didn’t see the need for someone whohad two perfectly good legs walk as if he had awalking challenge that was brought on by actin’.The limp was unnatural and didn’t display a senseof true confidence. It suggested I wasn’t clear onwhether I actually wanted to walk or hop! This iswhere we find a guy named Elijah. Elijah is on Mt.Carmel with about 450 men who all have a limp. The very essence of their walk emphaticallystates they are in over their head. They don’tknow who they should support. They have noclue who they should give their allegiance to.Theyareunclearaboutwhogetstheirworship should they worship God, or should theyworship Baal. This lack of overt clarity shows upin their physical walk! Imagine every time youwere unclear on what God wanted you to do,12 GRIFFIN, MIRANDA, WOOD

every time you were uncertain about whichrelationship you should detach from, every timeyou were unsure of which direction to go withmajor spiritual decisions it showed up physicallyin your walk! You attempted to mask it by movingfaster than usual but others can tell, it’s definitelya limp. That is what happens to these prophets ofBaal. They had an issue with trusting the one trueGod.I do believe because of God’s grace He hasshielded us from exposing ourselves with ourwalk but only for so long. The game the enemybeats us at is telling us no one knows howunreliable we are in trusting God, no one knowshow irresolute we are when it comes to trustingGod for our every move. The enemy beats usevery time because we have a bad limp. Victorywill be our outcome if we simply choose to be onthe Lord’s side. Any other choice will definitelyresult in a limp! Living a life of victory will beaccomplished simply by choosing to serve the#ONETEAM CHALLENGE 13

Lord unequivocally. Leaders must be careful howthey walk!I didn’t say it would be easy—just because itshard doesn’t mean it’s not a victory.Victorycomes in many different packages but never witha limp! I want to encourage you today to be reallycool, walk without a limp by walking with Jesus. Atext of assurance is simply this, “Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything inthe One who makes me who I am Phil.4:13 MSG.You can have a limp free life in Jesus Christ!#ONETEAM Challenge What are the things that have caused you tolimp over the years?1.2.3.14 GRIFFIN, MIRANDA, WOOD

Day 3FREESTYLEJesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let himgo.”John 11:44 NASBI don’t want to date myself, however it is clearthat the term “freestyle” is not a new term. It’s aterm that gives one the privilege to be mobile, free, and uninhibited by whatever may be around. When it comes to music, freestyling gives themusician by way of singing or playing theopportunity to sing without constraints that arelimited by a certain key or range—you can just gofor it! Freestyling in youth ministries is the mostamazing thing for a youth leader. The brakes aretaken off, the fetters are loosed, and restraints areonly used as caution to keep older people fromgetting hurt—right? I know youth leaders have aheart for students and a desire to be creative and#ONETEAM CHALLENGE 17

allow those that they lead exercise the same giftswithin the context of a spiritual setting. The issuemany times is dealing with the dead. The youthministry is dead, the youth are dead, the church isdead nothing Is alive. This is where we find Jesusand His team, in front of Lazarus’ tomb. Lazarusdidn’t survive the health challenge and it is clearJesus didn’t get to Lazarus in time to prevent hisultimate demise, so it seems. I am hopeful evenin situations like this, especially for youth leaderswho have arrived in front of their lifeless youthgroups and lifeless churches and lifeless supportstaff. It is clear to you that Jesus didn’t arrive intime to keep the ministry alive so that you wouldhave to be a part of a resurrection service. I dobelieve that at times it is necessary for a burial ofwhat is not working so that Christ can give new lifeand freestyling can take place. The opportunity tostart over is not always daunting, it can actually bea blessing. Jesus arrives at Lazarus’ grave andLazarus’ family members are there bothered thatJesus would even show His face at this most18 GRIFFIN, MIRANDA, WOOD

challenging time in their life. Isn’t it true? Jesuswill show up, sometimes He waits until it is themost difficult of times for you in leadership. Hesometimes waits until it’s the most difficult time inyour youth program. He sometimes delays untilall human, skilled, college-trained, certificateholding leaders are completely exhaustive ofideas, tricks and gimmicks so that He canresurrect something brand new in you. If you areat your wits end and feel that what you have beenworking on is dead, hold on Christ is the master ofresurrection on His timeline not ours. I am elatedthat Christ performed a resurrection that day infront of His team members, and even in front ofthe family members of Lazarus.I am elatedbecause it says to me no matter how challengingit gets the team must remain together. The teammust work through the issues together.Praythrough the issues together and above all remain#oneteam even in the darkest of hours.Thishappened with Lazarus’ family and I want toencourage you to allow it to happen with your#ONETEAM CHALLENGE 19

team. Jesus calls Lazarus from the grave, and hecomes forward completely wrapped, restrained, and bound. Jesus gives Words of Life to all youthleaders. Jesus gives a freestyle Word, “Unbindhim, and let him go.” Jesus too believes infreestyling. The good news for you today is thatall the ideas you have dreamed about, all thepromptings of the Holy Spirit you have received, all the thoughts towards moving students fromgrace to grace can be realized today if you allowChrist to unbind what has always been and looseyou to go “freestyle” listening to His voice, Hiscommands, His instructions. Prepare today for anew beginning.20 GRIFFIN, MIRANDA, WOOD

Day 4ENCAMPINGThe Angel of the Lord encamps all aroundthose who fear Him, and delivers them.Psalm 34:7 NKJVIt was our first wedding anniversary and wedecided we would go explore the UpperPeninsula of Michigan in mid-June. We loaded ourcamping equipment and our mountain bikes for agreat adventure. And an adventure it was!The first night of camping we arrived at a statecampground on the shores of Lake Superior atdusk. We built a campfire, set up our tent, and ateour veggie dog and baked-beans campfiresupper. With everything cleaned up and our foodsupply safely stored in our SUV, away fromvermin, birds, and bugs, we retired to our tent.We awoke to the sound of scratching andsqueaking and the banging of steel - in the#ONETEAM CHALLENGE 23

distance. What was it!? It went on for some timeand then it stopped. And then it started again butit sounded louder and nearer!! What could it be?!It lasted for a while and then it stopped again. Andthen - it started again - only nearer and louder!!!Now we could hear grunts as well. What could itbe? It was much bigger than a vermin or a bird. Wewere uncertain, but could it be a bear? The banging and squeaking stopped but thescratching and grunts got louder and closer. Andthen we realized that it was just on the outside ofour tent. It was definitely a bear! And it was waytoo close for our comfort! We were terrified! While I was silently quoting Psalm 34 my wife wasquoting Psalm 91 - all mixed up. However, Godknew what we meant. We were terrified and yetthere came peace. The bear went around to the front of the tent, and then we heard it. The sound of plastic beingcrumpled, like a water bottle being crushed. “OhNo!” We didn’t put our water jug away and he24 GRIFFIN, MIRANDA, WOOD

found it. But at least he was moving away from ourtent! The grunts got quieter and then it was that loudnoise of scratching and squeaking and bangingsteel. “What was it?” It lasted a while and thensilence. Bewildered yet thankful, our racing heartsslowed down and eventually we fell asleep. As the morning daylight approached and thesun began streaming through the forest weawoke with thankfulness in our hearts. Whathappened last night? Was all the noise and gruntsreally a bear or was it just a nightmare?Up and out of the tent - and there they were the tell-tail signs. Claw-punctures in our plasticwater container. Paw prints on the ground outsideof our nylon tent. Those noisy, squeaking, bangingsteel bear-proof garbage can lids and holders. And then we saw the signs posted aroundcamp that we did not notice at dusk when wearrived. “Beware, this is bear country.” And then itshowed diagrams of how to suspend your food orkeep it in containers so that bears do not smell it.#ONETEAM CHALLENGE 25

Thankfully we did not have any food in our tent oraround our campsite! The Angel of the Lord literally camped with usand delivered us from the claws and mouth of thebear.#ONETEAM Challenge Are you living an adventure? Do you haveeverything you need? Is your Angel of the Lordwith you or are you needing more of Hisawareness? Is there a lot of scratching and squeaking andbanging going on in your life? Can you identifythe causes? What Bible verses are youclaiming that are carrying you through?26 GRIFFIN, MIRANDA, WOOD

Day 5SHOW METhen Abraham said to his young men, “Stayhere with the donkey; I and the boy will go overthere and worship and come again to youGenesis 22:5 ESVI have a favorite relative—an uncle to be exact.I love all my relatives. I have a heart for eachcousin, aunt, uncle, in-law and the list goes on. Ihave one uncle that I am drawn to more oftenbecause he took an interest in me at an early age.My uncle intentionally invested human andfinancial resources in me because he felt it washis responsibility to not only live a certain wayaround me but show me how to live that life aswell. My uncle owns aconstruction company.demolitionandHe has tandem axledump trucks and dozers and paving equipmentthat would turn the heads of any inquisitive28 GRIFFIN, MIRANDA, WOOD

My uncle had severalemployees working with him and he encouragedme to join his team.I didn’t know how to work a dozer, drive a 13speed dump truck or any of the demolitionactivities that took place, but my uncle did and hecommitted to showing me step-by-step how todrive these huge trucks and load them with dirt ordebris depending on the job. I became his bestdriver because he took time to walk with me andtalk with me and hear me even when he didn’thave the answers but depended on Christ toreveal the answer to him.I asked my unclerecently, Why did he “show me” how to drive histrucks, operate his heavy equipment, load hisdozers, etc.?He replied “nephew, it’s my responsibility toshow you what wasn’t shown to me in hopes that#ONETEAM CHALLENGE 29

you will do the same for someone else.” My uncleknew the value of mentorship.Abraham knew what mentorship looked like aswell. Abraham was privileged to mentor his ownson Isaac. Abraham and Isaac make the hike upMount Moriah, the Bible informs us they havewood in their hands, they have a dagger for thesacrifice, they have tools to make a fire, but Isaacwants to know where is the sacrifice? Abrahamtakes a moment to mentor his son in what it’s liketo trust God for something that you have no cluewill actually come to pass. Abraham knows thathe must trust God, but he must mentor his son intrusting the same God. Is your faith transferring tothose whom you have the privilege to lead? Isyour faith strengthening others to have faith in theGod you claim?Mentorship is all about living out before othersthe clearest picture of the God who can betrusted. Many people will not get that pictureunless you take the time to show them. Isaac atthe top of Mount Moriah, with all the elements to30 GRIFFIN, MIRANDA, WOOD

make a sacrifice realized he was indeed thesacrifice. His father had shown so much trust inGod, that Isaac trusted the same God to providefor him as he had provided for his father. Isaacwas clear that in order for there to be a sacrifice—something must die!Mentorship requires awillingness to die in order that we might becomeselfless for the sake of others.Mentorshiprequires that our personal agendas die, that wemight take up the agenda of Christ in leadingothers to trust the God of Abraham. The Lordprovides on the mountain a caught in the thicketblessing for both Abraham and Isaac. The goodnews today is that the “caught in the thicket”blessing is available to all who take up the mantleof mentorship and show others what may nothave been shown to you for the sake of investingin the next generation of leaders. The blessing is yours today to carry someoneup the mountain of sacrifice knowing by faith asAbraham did, “me and the lad will return.”Everyone knows the walk down the mountain is#ONETEAM CHALLENGE 31

much sweeter than the trek up! Take time toshow me Jesus today and I will take time to showsomeone else tomorrow. Day 7BE STRONG AND COURAGEOUS"This is my command—be strong andcourageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. Forthe Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”Joshua 1:9 NLTYou know the feeling? The one where you arefinally alone, after a whirlwind of events that haveplaced you in a new leadership position, and afterall that hustle, you are alone, right there, taking itall in, reflecting on what this all means, on whatthe responsibilities are, on the risks and theexpectations. You start to think on the hed yet, you have that sinking feelingof not knowing exactly what you will do or howyou will do it or who you can count on for this.38 GRIFFIN, MIRANDA, WOOD

Don’t worry you are not the first one, nor thelast one to feel: incompetent, overwhelmed, overjoyed, overexcited, scared, worried, etc. Theonly assurance you have is that somehow GODhas called you for this, and yet, you still don’t feelrelaxedorcalm.Thetaskaheadseemsmonumental and maybe you are followingsomeone who was such a great leader, thatyou know many will compare you and yourleadership style to his.Can you imagine Joshua? Moses had just diedand here they were, finally at the doors of thepromised land. The expectations were high, andthe burden of leading an army and leading it wellwas huge. It is at this moment, when Joshua isalone that GOD shows up and encourages him.God not only encourages but reassures Joshua ofsomething: HE fulfills His promises and as HEpromised to be with Moses, HE will be withJoshua!!!#ONETEAM CHALLENGE 39
