WelcomeAfter some delays waiting for the world church to adopt a global identitystyle, we in the South Pacific Division are now able to continue the projectinitially started by James Standish, Shelley Poole and the team. It is exciting tonote that most of the identity package designed in the South Pacific has beenratified by the General Conference. However, there are a few differencesbetween what the South Pacific proposed and what has been approved. This short Adventist Identity Style Guide – South Pacific is the definitive guidefor applying this global identity throughout the South Pacific Division.Let me summarise the principles outlined in the Adventist Identity StyleGuide – South Pacific:1. IDENTITY: The icon (Bible, cross, flame, etc) needs to be associated withthe Seventh-day Adventist Church. This is the corporate identity. Everyoffice, congregation, school and other entity is a local representationof the corporate.2. COLOURS: The primary colours for signage in the South Pacific areAdventist Fire, Onyx and White. There are times when Charcoal needsto replace the onyx as it becomes too intense. Aged Care, Education andHealth have secondary colours. The General Conference have delegated to Divisions the choice of coloursin their regions.3. FONT: The primary font for Seventh-day Adventist Church or the otherentities is Advent Sans (this font is in the public domain). The locationidentifier/name is in Eye Catching SPD (this font requires a licence that SPDhas purchased and is available to Unions, Conferences and Entities). TheGeneral Conference has authorised the continued use of Eye Catching SPDthroughout the South Pacific.4. DESIGN: This global identity also acknowledges the importance of theSeventh-day by utilising the Creation Grid. Where possible, it is importantto utilise this Creation Grid.5. NAME: The corporate identity should always be Seventh-day AdventistNOT just Adventist (unless being used with a specific name such asAdventist Aged Care, Adventist Education, Adventist Health, AdventistMedia or Adventist Schools.October 2018 Edition6. TRADEMARK: A TM (trademark) needs to be placed beside the icon andafter the name Seventh-day Adventist Church as indicated. Both of thesehave been trademarked in Australia. We have been advised that it is moreimportant to have the TM than the (for Registered) as trade-marking isa stronger protection of intellectual property. It is also noted registration/trademarking processes can be quite complex in the Pacific and TMindicates that there is protection for these symbols.7. ILLUMINATION: If illuminated, only the white lettering should beilluminated. However, illumination may be restricted by local authorities.8. SIGNAGE: Primary signage should be simple and concise, containingminimal information. Typically this will be Seventh-day Adventist Church(or other entity) and the location and name. In a limited number ofcases, such as schools in Fiji, a registration number is also required (seeguidance in the Adventist Identity Style Guide – South Pacific).9. APPLICATION: The signage, as documented in this Style Guide, is to beused throughout the South Pacific. However, Unions have the opportunityof applying these principles to stationery, such as letterheads, businesscards, compliments slips, etc and digital publications. We believe the Seventh-day Adventist Church is God’s church and havebeen given a great commission to share Jesus and His Word with theworld. We do this in so many different ways through a variety of ministries. However, for this to be most effective, it is important that all of us committo working together. People will then know and appreciate the varietyof ministries of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, connect each goodencounter, build confidence in the organisation and be encouraged to join usas disciples of Jesus Christ.May this be yet another tool in sharing the good news of Jesus—what Hehas already done, is doing and will do—to God’s honour and glory.Dr Stephen J CurrowCommunication Director, South PacificSeventh-day Adventist ChurchSouth Pacific3

Primary logoThe Seventh-day Adventistbrand, which many people thinkof as the “logo,” or “symbol”has been in use since 1997,and is the most recognizableelement of our existing visualidentity system. Because ofthe meaning this logo alreadyholds, establishing over 20years of brand equity, theshapes of the symbol remainlargely unchanged from theoriginal. The flame icon/symbolis a registered trademark ofthe Seventh-day Adventistchurch, and use of the symbolis important in instances whencommunicating an officialassociation with the Seventhday Adventist church. The registered trademark maybe used by the Seventh-dayAdventist Church, its entities, institutions (including churchesand schools) as authorizedby the General Conferenceof Seventh-day Adventists, its divisions, unions andconferences.October 2018 EditionThe official Seventhday Adventist Churchlogo within the SouthPacific Division.LocationAn alternativehorizontal layoutof the Seventh-dayAdventist Churchlogo within the SouthPacific Division.LocationSeventh-day Adventist ChurchSouth Pacific4

Symbolism and nameSeventh-day refers to theAdventist belief in the biblical“Sabbath”. It is a time setaside for people to connectwith God, family and friends, and to share in both physicaland spiritual rest. The“Sabbath” was observed inthe Bible on the seventh dayof the calendar—Saturday. The weekly “Sabbath” isobserved from sunset Fridayto sunset Saturday globallyin all Seventh-day AdventistChurches.Adventist is a term thatdescribes someone whobelieves in the “advent” orreturn of Jesus Christ.Church is a term usedto describe a communityof believers who share acommon faith and purpose.Seventh-day Adventistsare part of a worldwidecommunity that sharescommon beliefs, regardlessof nationality, gender oreconomic status. Ourcommon purpose hasbeen given to us by Jesusas written in chapter 28 ofMatthew in the Bible.October 2018 EditionTOWARD HEAVENPERFECT SQUAREThe lines at the top of thedesign suggest a continuedupward momentum symbolisingthe resurrection and ascensionto heaven at Christ’s secondcoming, the ultimate focus ofour faith. The biblical metaphor of theperfect square represents God’sMost Holy Place and His designfor heaven.THE FLAMETHE CROSSThe symbol of the cross, representing the gospel ofsalvation, is positioned inthe centre of the design toemphasise Christ’s sacrifice, which is the central theme ofour faith. It is also significantthat the Bible representing thelaw and the flame representingthe Spirit come together at thecross. This flame shape is formed bythree lines encircling an impliedsphere. The lines representthe three angels of Revelation14 circling the globe and ourcommission to take the gospelto the entire world. The overallshape forms a flame symbolic ofthe Holy Spirit.THE OPEN BIBLEThe Bible forms the base ofthe design and representsthe Biblical foundation of ourbeliefs. It is portrayed in a fullyopened position suggesting afull acceptance of God’s word.Seventh-day Adventist ChurchSouth Pacific5

Using the logo elementsUSE OF FLAME ICON ONLYUSE OF LOGO TEXT WITHOUT THE ICONThe Adventist flame icon/symbol can exist framed in isolation, detachedfrom the name of the church or entity. It is preferable for the symbolto have a thoughtful relationship to the rest of the design system. Werecommend in most cases, where the symbol is detached from the entityname it sit within in the Sabbath column (see page 17).When the Adventist icon appears in the Sabbath column the logo textis not included with the icon. In this situation the logo text can be usedseparately to the icon. The ‘A’ in Adventist should be used as a guide toestablish the distance between the SDA logo and the location identifier if itis being used. All elements of the text based logo needs to be centred.LocationWhen not using the Adventist symbol within the Sabbath column or lockedwith an entity name, the preferred version is the knocked-out squareversion, which allows for more graphically pleasing layouts. When referring to the Seventh-day Adventist Church, the icon needs to bereversed out of the Adventist Fire or Charcoal square. For departmentsof the SDA Church, there is a range of secondary colours to represent thedepartment.Any accompanying word marks should be black or reversed out ofcharcoal, not the same colour as the symbols box unless the printed itemis single colour.October 2018 EditionSeventh-day Adventist ChurchSouth Pacific6

Logo variationsHORIZONTAL VERSIONSPrimary LogoThe horizontal version of the logo is for usewhere the primary logo is not able to beused aesthetically. If the logo is to appear over a colour toosimilar to either of the colours used in thelogo then a white 1.5 pt boarder is requiredto frame the logo.Mono - blackWhere there are limited colour options, you have a choice of using the black monoversion or a reversed option that works wellon images that are not too busy, or the tonalcontrast is low.The mono black version of the logo is only tobe used in a black and white context wherecolour printing is not possible. The reversed option can be used onpredominately dark backgrounds where the2-colour version would not stand out. Makesure the positioning of the logo is over atonally flat part of the background so thatthe text is still readable.ReversedWhite background (for use on emails)The white background text box is for usewhen the usual charcoal block would be toodominate, such as on emails and stationery. If these guidelines do not cover yourintended use of the logo, please contactthe SPD communication department at communications spd@adventist.org.au to discuss with them solutions that will workfor your requirements.October 2018 EditionSeventh-day Adventist ChurchSouth Pacific7

Dimensions of the primary logoxUSE OF PRIMARY LOGOThe Seventh-day Adventist logoshould be used to identify and unifyall Adventist churches, publications, services and activities. Using the logoin a consistent manner across allapplications helps to both establish andreinforce immediate recognition of theSeventh-day Adventist Church brand.xThe words “Seventh-day AdventistChurch” should always be centred inthe charcoal block and only over twolines. The ratio of this block is to be 2.5times the width of the Adventist iconblockIt is preferred that the locationidentifier in Eye Catching SPD appearsunder the SDA logo when practicalto do so. The ‘A’ in Adventist shouldbe used as a guide to establish thedistance between the SDA logo and thelocation identifier.SIZE OF ICONThe size of the Adventist icon in relationto the Adventist Fire square is basedon the use of the Creation Grid. It iscentred and 5/7ths of the size of theAdventist Fire square.October 2018 Edition2.5 xLocationy7yyUtilising the sevenpart Creation GridThe Creation Griddetermines the sizeof the icon withinthe AdventistFire square.Seventh-day Adventist ChurchSouth Pacific8

Spacing of logo elementsWhile the preferred size of thecharcoal block is to be 2.5 timesthe width of the flame icon onthe official SDA logo, this rulemay vary if the longest line of theentities names accompanying theflame icon is too short, such asunder 10 characters long. With shorter named entities thename of the entity can have atendency to feel lost in the largecharcoal block, in such cases it ispermissible to reduce the charcoalblock to 2 time the width of theflame icon. This is the minimalratio this box can be reduced to.The longest line of an entitiesname is to be no closer to theflame icon than the space of the‘e’ in Adventist (see guide below).Preferred ratio and spacesx2.5 xxAcceptable ratio for smaller named entities.x2xxLOGO ON WHITEOccasionally there may be a callfor the logo to appear on a whitebackground—such as with emailheaders. In these circumstancesthe ‘e’ in Adventist should beused as a guide to establish thedistance between the flame iconand the entities name, and asecond ‘e’ space will determinethe placement of the entitieslocation.October 2018 EditionElement spacing on white backgroundsSeventh-day Adventist ChurchSouth Pacific9

Logo clear spacePROTECTED AREA¹/³ xxxThe Seventh-day Adventistlogo needs some breathingroom to stand out. To ensurelegibility, it must be surroundedwith a minimum amount ofclear space. This isolates thelogo from competing elementssuch as photography, text orbackground patterns that mightdetract attention to the logo.To make sure the logo is alwaysvisible, we’ve determined aminimum display size for bothdigital and print applications.Failing to follow this standardcompromises the integrity andlegibility of the logo. For usesunder the minimum size of thelogotype shown here for theprimary logo, please use theAdventist icon.October 2018 Edition¹/³ x¹/³ x¹/³ xThe spacing principles hereapply when the icon is beingused on its own apart from theCreation Grid.MINIMUM SIZE2.5 xThe clear space minimum is equivalent to one third thewidth of the coloured box the Adventist Icon appears in,regardless of the size at which the logo is reproduced.30 mm8.5 mmMinimum print size for thelogo text is 30 mm wide.Minimum print size for theicon only is 8.5 mm wide.Minimum digital size is 90pixels wideMinimum digital size is 25pixels wideExample of the logo used at the minimum sizeSeventh-day Adventist ChurchSouth Pacific10

It can also be used, as anexample, for the person’s name on businesscards to make it stand out more.Avoid using it for body text, as Open Sans isrecommended for that body style. Advent Sansis to be used minimally which is why it workswell for headings and subheadings.PLEASE NOTE: This font has been speciallydeveloped for use in the South Pacific Divisionand is a slightly different font to what isavailable on the General Conference website.ADVENT SANS–LOGO RSTUVWXYZ1234567890EYE CATCHING VWXYZ1234567890Eye Catching SPD is to be used ONLY forlocation names for the division, union, mission, conference or local church logos. Secondary fontsThe Open Sans font family is a complementarysecondary font that works well in larger blocksof text, such as body text in Word documents,on websites and all forms of marketing material, including stationery such as business cards andletterhead. The range of weights will assist increating emphasis and text hierarchy, helping thedesign flow and making it easier for the readerto find their way around the informationpresented to them.Avoid using Open Sans for main headings, asAdvent Sans is the designated font for those styles. While Droid Serif is a font other divisions might beusing in their branding, within the South PacificDivision region, we recommend using Advent Sansand/or Open Sans instead.OPEN SANS TUVWXYZ1234567890OPEN SANS RSTUVWXYZ1234567890OPEN SANS SEMI UVWXYZ1234567890OPEN SANS UVWXYZ1234567890OPEN SANS EXTRA UVWXYZ1234567890October 2018 EditionSeventh-day Adventist ChurchSouth Pacific16

Design elementsCREATION GRIDThe Creation Grid isa seven-column layoutstructure to be used in themajority of design situations. The first six columns areyours to fill with text, images, illustrations, patterns, logos or anything else, andin those six columns youshould do all your work ofcommunicating information. But the seventh-column,the Sabbath column, is to beset apart—to be special anddifferent from the other sixcolumns, as a reminder andvisual celebration of theseventh day.The Sabbath column shouldfeature only the Adventistsymbol with no other text. The Adventist symbol is inwhite on the Adventist Firebackground, or white oncharcoal. The proportions areessential, but the grid linesare optional, and therewill be instances when thegrid might not make sensefor your particular contextor application. In thoseinstances, it is permissibleand even encouraged thatyou ignore the grid andplace the symbol/artwork asneeded. This would typicallyapply to applications inwhich the symbol standsalone or is not intendedto be integrated with thesurrounding layout.Use the Flame Sabbath Strip in the7th column, but don’t be tempted tofill the column with any text.HeadingSUBHEADSUBHEADSUBHEADSUBHEADRo delisiTum zzrilis nim irilla faccum venisimzzriliquatet augait, vercilis nos alit ullacommy nostie et, commolore exeros niametnibh et, sed el dolesti smolor autat. Adventist Seventh-day 1 South Pacific 4 October 2018 Edition Locatio The Seventh-day Adventist brand, which many people think of as the “logo,” or “symbol” has been in use since 1997, and is the most recognizable element of our existing visual identity system. Because of
