The oil and gas industry has been flourishing in theMiddle East in the last decade.Faculty of Eng. Cairo University has contributed inthe supply of the manpower requirements on thelocal, Arab region, and worldwide levels.
The oil and gas sector is divided into two main componentsUpstream SectorIncludes the searching for potentialunderground or underwater oil and gasfields, drilling of exploratory wells, andsubsequently operating the wells thatrecover and bring the crude oil and/orraw natural gas to the surfaceDownstream SectorIncludes refining of petroleum crude oil, processing of natural gas and the use ofpetroleum and its derivatives as raw materialsto produce useful chemicals.
Exploration and Production (E&P) Joint venture(eg. Khalda, Gupco, Petrobel, .) Drilling Contractor (EDC, ECDC, Senotharwa,Weatherforad, .) Service Companies (Schlumberger, Baker, )
Refineries: eg. Cairo Mostorod Refinery, AlexandriaAmeriya Refinery, Alexandria Midor Refinery, .Natural Gas Processing: e.g. RASGAS, GASCO,SEGAS, Petrochemicals: Styrenics, Methanex, .Distributors: EgyptGas, Design: ENPPI, .
Usually Chemical Engineering graduates work in the downstreamsector while Petroleum Engineering graduates work in theupstream sector. In many cases, graduates from the petroleum engineeringdepartment had to assume responsibilities in refining andpetrochemical plants while many chemical engineers have beenassigned jobs in the prospecting and oil field operations. This situation called for the formation of a hybridengineer combining the qualifications of PC
The Petroleum and Petrochemical Program is acredit hour system under the umbrella of bothPetroleum & Chemical Engineering DepartmentsPetroleum&Chemical EngineeringPetroleum & PetrochemicalEngineering
The Petroleum and Petrochemical Engineering is adiscipline that integrates knowledge and skillsrequired for both upstream and downstreamindustries of oil and gas. Graduates will major ineither of the following: Petroleum Engineering (PPC-P), Upstream. Petrochemical Engineering (PPC-C), Downstream.
Students majoring in either upstream or downstreamstudy the same courses during the Sophomore and Juniorlevels. Elective courses are available for Senior 1 students. Graduating Senior students will have to give the finaldecision; either Petroleum or Petrochemicals.
Thus graduates majoring in either upstream ordownstream industries of oil and gas will in thesame time acquire the background of the otherand thus improving fieldwork flexibilities in careerdevelopment.
