There are afew different ways to approach this question.Today’s Gospel highlights two: the way of thePharisees and the way of John the Baptist. Our faith values good works and discipleship.Perhaps, then, we “earn” our worth byadhering to the right doctrines and followingthe right pious practice. The Phariseesthought they were worthy. Due to theirreligious pedigree and proper procedures, they were self-satisfied. John the Baptist’swords to them are strong. “Do not resume tosay to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as ourfather.’” Of course, Jesus (and John) don’tomit the responsibility for moral behavior.John gives the Pharisees quite a strongwarning in that regard. “Produce good fruit asevidence of your repentance every tree thatdoes not bear good fruit will be cut down andthrown into the fire.”It’s a question of attitude. Of disposition. It’sa matter of the heart. If anyone would beworthy in this scenario, it’s John the Baptist.Jesus himself will name him the greatest ofprophets and a great man. John, however, recognizes his own lowly place in the grandscheme of things. “The one who is comingafter me is mightier than I. I am not worthy tocarry his sandals.” The Pharisees take pridein being “better” than others. John embraceshumility in Christ being “better” than him.We don’t self-generate our own worthiness. We receive it as a gift from God.In a few short weeks, we’ll celebrate the birthof Christ. Bishop Ven. Fulton Sheen wroteabout the Nativity in his “Life of Christ”:“Because [Jesus] was born in a cave, all whowish to see Him must stoop. To stoop is themark of humility. The proud refuse to stoopand, therefore, they miss divinity.” Godinvites us to prepare our hearts this Advent. When you consider your own life, where areyou looking for your worth? This Christmas, are you prepared to stoop?

The Christmas PageantRehearsal will be on Wednesday, December 18,at 5:00 pm. The Pageant will take place duringthe homily at the 4:00 pm Christmas EveMass. Details to follow!December 22/23 and 29/30: No classesDid you know Isaiah speak in the FirstReading today of the“Stump of Jesse”, Isaiahwas talking about theMessiah, Jesus? Isaiahwas referring to what wecall today a Family Tree. Jesse was the fatherof King David, and King David was the greatgreat great (I don’t know how many greats!)grandfather of Jesus. Isaiah was told by Godthat a future descendent of Jesse and King David would born, that this person would be filledwith the Spirit of the Lord (the Holy Spirit), andbecause of being filled with God’s Spirit, he haswisdom, understanding, counsel, strength, knowledge, and fear of the Lord—all gifts of theHoly Spirit which we receive at Confirmation.Wait a minute—Fear? No, it doesn’t mean thatJesus was afraid of God. This “Fear of theLord” is a biblical term for showing respect, awe, and complete obedience to God.As you continue to plan out your New Year’sresolutions, consider how well you show your“Fear of the Lord”. No matter how well you aredoing now, we can always do better! Our third session of Confirmationpreparation ends with Class after 5pmSunday Mass this weekend. The focus ofcatechesis during this session was how wecan understand the Church as "Servant".Our model of course is Jesus who began hislife in such a humble way and at the end ofhis life, washed the feet of his disciplesbefore giving up his life for us.Next Saturday December 14th) is ourConfirmation retreat. The venue has beenchanged and we will now spend the day at StJulia's Parish center with youth leaders fromnearby Good Shepherd parish. LauraTringali, the youth minister there will lead25 teens in a day of reflection andcommunity building. This retreat is required once in the 2 years ofConfirmation preparation. We will meet atSt Julia's at 10am and the retreat ends withMass at 4pm in the church. The purpose ofthis day is to reconsider our faith and therole that our relationship with God plays ineverything we do. Reflecting with peers whohave similar questions has proven to be agreat way to experience the Grace which isalways available for us. Witness talks, smallgroup sharing, prayer, lunch, and activitiesthat keep us moving around make the daypass very quickly.
