AUTHOR’S NOTES:This is an index of the divorce cases that were settled in Hendricks County, as mentioned in theHendricks County Circuit Court order books volumes 1 through 106 (which cover 1824 to 1959)and the Hendricks County Court of Common Pleas order books volumes 1 through 9 (which cover1853 to 1873). These order books have been digitized and are available online via the Archivessection of the Hendricks County government's website (http://www.co.hendricks.in.us).This index does NOT contain all the information that was included in the order books about thedivorce case. You should look in the order book for all of the entries about the divorce case, as itwill have the date of the court action as well as provide details about the court action (such as:temporary alimony; a restraining order issued; a cross-complaint filed; a notice of non-residency ofthe defendant having been published 3 times in an Indiana newspaper). If a divorce was granted,that particular entry will also mention the names of any children and who custody was awarded to.Also, be aware that there were usually multiple entries for a divorce case, so it may appearmultiple times in that order book - and even in the order books prior to the entry that is listed inthis index.Once you have gleaned all the details from the order books, then you can contact the HendricksCounty Clerk's Microfilm Department to request a search for information on the divorce case. TheMicrofilm Department is located on the second floor of the Hendricks County courthouse inDanville, Indiana and can be reached by phone at (317) 745-9800. NOTE: It is not known if the"loose papers" of the divorce cases before 1900 survived. However, even if no loose papers areavailable, courthouse staff may still be able to provide additional information by looking forinformation in the fee books and judgment books.
