Due to the increasedresistance of the copper sectionsresulting from the skin effect producedby eddy currents at these frequencies,circuit breakers in many cases requirederating. The thermal derating on thesedevices is based upon 100%,three phase application in open air in amaximum of 40 C (104 F) with 48 in.(1219 mm) of the specified cable or busat the line and load side. Additionalderating of not less than 20% will berequired if the circuit breaker is to beutilized in an enclosure. Further deratingmay be required if the enclosureambient temperature exceeds 40 C(104 F).Cable and Bus SizingThe cable and bus sizes to be utilizedat 400Hz are not based on standardNational Electric Codes tables for 60Hzapplication. Larger cross sections arenecessary at 400Hz. All bus barsspecified are based upon mountingthe bars in the vertical plane to allowmaximum air flow. All bus bars arespaced at a minimum of 0.25 in. (6 mm)apart. Mounting of bus bars in thehorizontal plane will necessitateadditional drafting. Edgewise orientationof the bus may change the maximumratings indicated. If additional informationis required for other connections of cableor bus, contact Siemens for information.Application RecommendationsIt is recommended that temperatures bemeasured on the line and load terminalsor T-connectors of the center pole. Theseare usually the hottest terminals with abalanced load. A maximum temperatureof 75 C (35 C over a maximum ambientof 40 C) would verify the particularapplication. Temperature profiles takenon these breakers can be correlated toensure that the hottest points withinthe breaker are within the requiredtemperature limits.Factory ConfigurationWhen required, molded case circuitbreakers may be factory calibrated for400Hz application. These breakers arespecially labeled for 400Hz usage andtheir nameplate current rating willinclude the necessary derating factory.The highest “Maximum ContinuousAmperes” rating at 400Hz, found in thetable below approximates the highestspecially calibrated 400Hz nameplateampere rating available for a givenframe size. Molded Case Circuit BreakersTypical SpecificationsReferenceGeneral SpecificationsMolded case circuit breakers shall provide circuit overcurrent protection withinverse time and instantaneous tripping characteristics and shall be SiemensSentron, Sensitrip or approved equal.All circuit breakers shall be listed by Underwriters’ Laboratories, Inc., conformto applicable requirements of NEMA Standard Publication No. AB1 and meetappropriate classifications of Federal Specifications W C 375B/Gen.All circuit breakers shall have a quick-make, quick-break over center toggle typemechanism and the handle mechanism shall be trip free to prevent holding contactsclosed against a short circuit or sustained overload. All circuit breaker handles shallassume a position between “ON” and “OFF when tripped automatically. Multi-polecircuit breakers shall be common-trip such that an overload or short circuit on anyone pole will result in all poles opening simultaneously. Arc extinction is to beaccomplished by magnetic arc chutes. All ratings are to be clearly visible. Automatic operation of these circuit breakers shall be obtained bymeans of thermal-magnetic tripping devices located in each pole providing inversetime delay and instantaneous circuit protection. Circuit breakers shall be ambientcompensating in that, as the ambient temperature increases over 40 C, the circuitbreaker automatically derates itself so as to better protect its associated conductor.Thermal magnetic breakers from 250 to 2000A frames shall have thermalinterchangeable trip units, with instantaneous magnetic trip settings that areadjustable and accessible from the front of all circuit breakers on frame sizes 250Amperes and above. The continuous currentrating shall be between 1 and 800 Amperes as indicated on the drawing.Solid State Sensing SpecificationsAs indicated on the drawings, circuit breaker frames400 Ampere through 3200-Ampere shall havemicroprocessor-based RMS sensing trip units, withthe capability to measure through to the 21st harmonic.Automatic operation of all circuit breaker frames 400Aand larger shall be obtained by means of solid statetripping elements providing inverse time delay and(instantaneous) and/or (short-time delay) circuitprotection. Ground fault time delay shall be adjustablewith three 12t ramps.Metering OptionWhen indicated on the drawings, solid state trip breakersshall be furnished with a plug-in or panel mountedmetering device. This device shall simultaneously displayall three phase currents, as well as average current,ground current, and phase unbalance. In addition it shalldisplay breaker status, a max log, and a trip log. The triplog will retain and display date, time and type of trip(overload, short circuit or ground fault) for the mostrecent 5 trip events.Current Limiting SpecificationsThe interrupting rating of the circuit breakers shall be as indicated in thespecifications, and shown on the drawing or single line diagram.
