COVID revealed and exaggerated the systemic challenges for our artsecosystem and exposed the creative sector’s vulnerability and the need to increaseeconomic security, equity, and dignity for all cultural workers. Arts groupsre-examined priorities, modified programming and business models, anddemonstrated a deep commitment to their communities. We know that the questfor social justice has momentum, virtual programming is here to stay, and coalitionsmatter. And, in doing so, theyacknowledged the value of the deep relationships with eachother and with SVCREATES.A FEW HIGHLIGHTS:Red Ladder Theatre Company shifted its SVCREATES fundedwork with youth in the foster system (a partnership with ChildAdvocates of Silicon Valley) to provide asynchronous videoprogramming, engaging the children in a series of interactivevideos in the creative process, paired with hands-on artactivities. Participants were able to remain actively involved inall aspects of the creative process and feel connected toothers and to their artistry, even at a time when we could notgather in person for workshops.SVCREATES grantee Mosaic America produced the MosaicFestival Silicon Valley, a free outdoor six-hour experience.Approximately 1,500 people engaged with Silicon Valley’sdiverse cultures featuring over 35 arts groups, artists, city andcommunity organizations, and culture bearers aimed atstrengthening community, cultivating belonging, and catalyzinginclusion through inter-cultural and co-created art. This festivalbrought together a diversity of audiences and culturaldisciplines encompassing cuisine, art and crafts, workshops,and healing practices.

In collaboration with Anno Domini andKaleid Gallery, Content Magazine and its partners activatedseveral blocks of San Jose’s SoFA district. The outdoor,in-person Pick-Up Party featured music, art, and San Jose'slowrider car club Low Conspiracy.And in December, Content Magazine hosted a Pick-Up Partyfor Issue 14.1 "Discover” at Blanco Urban Venue in SanJose’s San Pedro Square, supported with funding from theCity of San Jose’s Abierto program and featuring music,visual art, creative experiences, and performances by 14.1featured artists, including music by Dox Black, Jack Pavlina,and Derrick Sanderlin. This party also featured the annualgenARTS Silicon Valley Movers & Shakers award, given toSan Jose based More Más Marami Arts.After just three years of creating theatre and producingevents, More Más Marami Arts is honored to berecognized in the community as the 2021 genARTS SiliconValley Mover & Shaker. In aneffort to better serve the arts ecosystem in this historicallyunder-resourced region of our county, we met withindividual artists, and arts and community leaders, to forman advisory group of local creatives to help us understandthe unique challenges and opportunities in the City of Gilroy.These initial conversations (mostly over Zoom) resulted inour first in-person Gilroy Arts Circulo, bringing artists andarts leaders together to begin to build a network to discussstrategies for advancing the Gilroy arts ecosystem.Arts & HealthIn collaboration with ICA San Jose, we created an impactfulart installation that celebrates and honors healthcareprofessionals and shares the enduring stories of patientsduring the COVID-19 pandemic. The project artists PeterFoucault and Chris Treggiari created “Timeline ofGreatness,” a large-scale, digital multimedia installationincorporating a series of community engagements. Thisproject includes utilizing 1,000 vaccine vials to create amodular wall-mounted multimedia piece that will travel tocommunity and vaccine sites throughout the San Jose area.The engagements and collection will act as a multimediaarchive, charting the stories of COVID and the great workthat was done to save countless lives and produce a vaccine.

SVCREATES 2021 Annual ReportINCUBATION OF COLLABORATIVE INITIATIVESIN 2021 WE: Premiered the Business of Arts andCulture, in collaboration with theSilicon Valley Business Journal (SVBJ)in May 2021 Formed partnership with JointVenture Silicon Valley to co-createand annually publish the local artssegment of their Index of SiliconValley Launched regional strategy tocollaborate with municipalitiesthroughout the county to leveragepublic and private resources for localarts Piloted the ArtsWeb arts/businessrelationship-based service hub,providing eight initial arts groupsand artists with coaching, technicalsupport and custom designedconsulting servicesPear Theatre has been so privileged to be apart of SVCREATES’ ArtsWeb Program. Wehave been able to redefine our Mission andVision and recommit to the Values that willcarry us into the next 20 years of theatremaking. In May 2021, we released thepublication and hosted a discussion facilitated by SVBJ Presidentand Publisher Mary Huss with Santa Clara County SupervisorCindy Chavez, Nicole Taylor of Silicon Valley CommunityFoundation, and SVCREATES CEO Connie Martinez.This publication is informing shifts in SVCREATES’ programmingand resource allocations, and is being shared with the widercommunity to help civic leaders and donors better understandwho we are as a cultural sector and what we bring to this specialcommunity. Presentations to Arts Commissions, City Councils,Chambers of Commerce, Rotaries and the like are underway asSVCREATES expands its reach across the county. We believeengagement and investment in our arts ecosystem requires anuanced understanding of our region’s unique and beautifulcomplexity, and the value of the arts in overcoming our civicchallenges.
