HISTORYHead Start is a program of the United StatesDepartment of Health and Human Servicesthat focuses on assisting low-income anddisadvantaged families and children. Theprogram was created in 1965 as part ofPresident Lyndon Johnson’s war on poverty. The program was designed to help break thecycle of poverty by providing comprehensiveservices that would meet the emotional, health, nutritional and psychological needsof preschool children from low-income anddisadvantaged families.20HEAD START SUCCESS STORY!In September 2013, my son enrolled in preschool at Citrus Head Start. Like many other mothers,I transported my child from home to preschool and did some house chores until it was time topick him up. In October, the Site Supervisor had asked me if I was interested in joining thePathways to Success Apprenticeship Program. I declined the offer believing it was somethingI did not want to participate in and join. The Site Supervisor provided me a handbook and Iwent home. After reviewing the handbook, I came back the next day and told her that I wasin fact very interested in the program. I completed the required paperwork and waited formy welcome letter with my orientation date to arrive in the mail. By the end of November, Ihad completed the program orientation, completed my TB test, and started the program as aTeacher Aide. In January, school was starting and enrolling in the Apprenticeship Program gaveme the extra push I needed to go back and enroll in school. Preschool Services paid for all mybooks and registration fees, and provided me with a guaranteed slot in both classes. Fast forwardto December 2014, I completed my 180 program hours as a Teacher Aide and was finishing up mysecond semester of school. During this time, I made many friends and connections while attendingschool and in December I received a call from the colleges Child Development Center offering me a job as a StudentWorker. This job would allow to me continue going to school, therefore I gladly accepted.I’m writing this because I think it’s important for parents to understand the value of the Apprenticeship Program andhow it was beneficial to me. I don’t think I would have been able to come all this way or obtain a job without all the helpand effort from the Citrus Head Start staff. I’m beyond grateful to the Citrus Head Start staff for opening their doors andwelcoming me with open arms. Don’t be afraid to ask about this program, it opens up a lot of doors, and it’s truly anamazing experience working with teachers, staff, and more importantly the children in the community. - Nicole Williams
