Its key objective is to developwithin each of them a true sense of Christian values using a holistic approach that fosters the integration of each person asan individual within a global community.Academic excellence is sought within a Catholic environment which reinforces the dignity and respect of everyone, whilefostering the call to discipleship of all. Maria Regina High School: 2020 - 2021 Student/Parent HandbookRESPECT FOR GOD AND COUNTRYRegardless of whether students are Catholic or not, or American citizens or citizens of another country, all students willstand respectfully during morning prayers and Pledge of Allegiance as we begin each academic day. All students willalso attend any Eucharistic celebrations, prayer services, etc. that occur during the academic year.COMMUNICATION & CONFIDENTIALITYAs parents, you are the student’s first teachers & partners in her education. Therefore, regular communication with youis an essential part of your daughter’s school experience. A parent may request a meeting with a teacher by emailing theteacher, staff member or administrator and arranging for a time to speak.There is a professional, legal and moral ethic that requires all persons to safeguard all student information of aprivileged nature. It is imperative that such information be regarded as a sacred trust. If there is evidence of knowledge that could impact the health and safety of any person, students, parents and staffhave the responsibility to share the information with the Administration of Maria Regina High School.Under Section 423 of the Child Protective Services Act, school officials are required to report when they havereasonable cause to suspect that a child coming before them in their professional or official capacity is an abusedor maltreated child.The rules that govern privileged information apply, as well, to any personal or academic information that is discoveredthrough daily classroom instruction or other social interaction with students, parents or peers. Always, the sense ofconfidentiality should prevail.SCHOOL CLOSINGS AND DELAYSInclement weather closings and delays will be announced on News 12 Westchester, via Rediker alerts, Twitter,Facebook, Instagram, and on Maria Regina’s website. In the event of a delay due to inclement weather, students arepermitted to have a MRHS dress down (see MRHS Dress Down on p. 17). On days the building is closed forinclement weather, whenever possible, classes will be held with a modified remote learning schedule.Students riding the MRHS Charter Bus must pay close attention to delays. For example, if there is a two-hour delay,students will be picked up at their regular stop two hours later than their regularly scheduled pick-up. There will be noBee Line Special bus to Maria Regina on delayed opening days. Students should ride the regularly scheduled #6 BeeLine Bus which runs on the similar route.Please note : If any parents/guardians have any reservations about their daughters driving themselves and/or otherstudents to school during inclement weather, please do not allow them to drive to school.TRANSPORTATIONAll information regarding Bus and Train Transportation to Maria Regina High School is available on the MRHSwebsite.Behavior on the bus and/or Metro-North : Students are expected to behave in such a way that no one’s safety will bejeopardized. All school policies/rules apply. In order to preserve our financial future, tuition must becollected. Please do not send tuition payments to the school, as we do not accept payments in house. Tuition should bepaid directly to: FACTS Management Company, P.O. Box 2597, Omaha, Nebraska 68103Telephone: 866-441-4637Website: www.online.factsmgt.comThe annual enrollment fee is 55.00 per student. Grades 9 through 11 are on a ten-month payment plan, with tuition dueeach month from August through May. Grade 12 is on a nine-month payment plan, with tuition due from Augustthrough April. There is a 40.00 service charge for tuition that arrives late or is less than the full monthly amount.No student may return to Maria Regina in September if the previous year’s tuition is unpaid.A family’s failure to meet financial obligations to the school will be addressed quarterly and may result in thefollowing: No field trips or overnight trips.o Including Athletic and Choral tripsNo report card issuance.No transfer of school records issuance.No Junior or Senior Prom attendance. No admittance to final exams.Possible suspension from athletic events.No cap, gown, and/or diploma issuance.No graduation participation.No transcript forwarding to colleges.If a student’s account is in arrears before the start of the second semester, she will be asked to withdraw fromMaria Regina.Tuition Refund PolicyUpon withdrawal from Maria Regina, any tuition paid for subsequent months will be refunded less 700.00 in the firstsemester and 350.00 in the second semester. Monthly tuition payments must be satisfied through the student’s last dateof attendance.VISITORSAll visitors MUST use the MAIN ENTRANCE and sign in at the Main Office or the Security Desk located in theschool’s Main Lobby. All visitors entering the school building will be asked to present a valid form of photoidentification and will be processed through SchoolPass. As a safety precaution,at no time are visitors permitted touse the North Entrance for entry. Parents/Guardians are not permitted to go directly to a classroom or a student’s lockerat any time, including after school. This is a security concern as well as a courtesy to other parents or students who havescheduled time with teachers.Parents/Guardians who wish to meet with teachers should contact the teacher directly either through email or a phonecall to the Main Office. Phone messages will be placed in the teacher’s mailbox. Please allow twenty-four hours for a return call or email. Unscheduled meetings are not permitted.4Scholarship Service Spirit

Cheating includes, but is not limited to: The use of unfair means to pass an examination, test, or quiz. This includes having access to notes, books, orother aids AND giving aid to or obtaining aid from another student. Plagiarism is defined as taking ideas, writings, etc. from another and offering them as one’s own.o Therefore, a student must clearly and precisely cite the sources of words and ideas that are not her own.That includes direct quotations from a source and any paraphrased or summarized sources. Copying classroom assignments or homework.All students who, in the judgment of a teacher or exam proctor, are found cheating or attempting to cheat will receive thefollowing consequences:First offense:Subsequent offense: Three (3) detentions Three (3) detentions A zero on the assignment/test A zero on the assignment/test Parents/guardians will be called Meeting with parent/guardian Warning status (Probation) During any Midterm or Final Examination period, students will surrender their cellphones/smartwatches to theirproctors to be placed in visible storage areas in each classroom. If a student is found to have a cell phone orsmartwatch on her person, she will be assumed to be cheating and will be given a zero for that examination.o A student found cheating on a final exam will automatically fail the course and must enroll in anapproved summer school program in order to receive the necessary credit before returning to MariaRegina in September. Additionally , if any Student Council member or officer or member of any Honor Society is found to be cheating,she will forfeit her position.DIPLOMA REQUIREMENTSGraduation from Maria Regina includes successful completion of the four-year required course of study. Maria Regina High School: 2020 - 2021 Student/Parent HandbookGRADUATIONBaccalaureate Mass and Commencement Exercises are held at the end of senior year. This marks the successfulcompletion of all requirements for graduation from Maria Regina High School. Also See Tuition & Fees p. 4. Academic Excellence at Graduation: Seniors will be recognized at graduation for areas such as academic excellence,challenging course load, service, and school involvement. The Valedictorian andSalutatorian will be named according to grade point average, difficulty of academicprogram, and commitment to the spirit of Maria Regina. Selection is at the discretion ofadministration. A transfer student's GPA from her former school will not be calculated inher GPA at the time of graduation to determine Valedictorian and Salutatorian selection.Seniors are required to attend the Baccalaureate Mass and Commencement Exercises. Additionally,seniors are required to attend and be on time for any scheduled graduation practices.Seniors may not attend traditional summer school classes after graduation exercises to fulfill their graduationrequirements.HONOR ROLL POLICYAn HONOR ROLL for each of the four quarters indicates the following:Principal’s ListGeneral average of 95% (with NO grade below an 90%)First HonorsGeneral average of 92% (with NO grade below an 88%)Second HonorsGeneral average of 90% (with NO grade below an 85%)MARKING SYSTEMReport cards are issued four times a year, one for each marking period of the school year. Each quarter averagerepresents tests, quizzes, class participation, homework, and/or projects. Teacher availability will be posted to GoogleClassroom and PlusPortals . Failure to attend may result in a detention.Academic Failure Policy: The following is Maria Regina’s policy on failures at the end of the school year, as well assummer school attendance: A freshman, sophomore, or junior who fails one or more subjects must enroll in an approved summer schoolprogram and successfully complete that program in order to return to Maria Regina High School for the nextschool year.o If a course is not offered in summer school, the student must repeat the course at Maria Regina thefollowing school year. However, no student may repeat more than one course over three years at MariaRegina. This is to ensure the acquisition of the necessary credits required for graduation.o The original failing grade will remain on the student’s transcript. A “Pass” or “Fail” will be noted for thesummer school course. A student who fails three academic courses may be asked to withdraw from Maria Regina. Any exception to thesepolicies due to extenuating circumstances will be determined by administration. Any student who consistently fails multiple courses may be asked to withdraw from Maria Regina High School.COURSE PLACEMENTFor the 2021-2022 school year, course placement will be advised in consultation with students, their current teachers,Student Support Services, and their grade-level counselors.Advanced Placement Courses: AP course placement will be determined by a student’s AP Potential (as outlined by theCollege Board and a student’s PSAT results) and a per course placement test. Certain courses have specific guidelinesas outlined in our Course Catalog. Students taking AP English Language junior year must take either AP Literature or English 12 (not Iona Link) intheir senior year.All students must take seven courses their senior year with the exception of seniors who take 3 or more AP courses.They may take only six courses.STANDARDIZED TESTINGAll students in grades 9 through 11 will take the PSAT exam. The PSAT also serves as the National Merit ScholarshipQualifying Test for juniors. PSAT results may be used as a tool for future academic and college advisement. As part of their class schedule, juniors will be scheduled for both SAT Math and SAT English courses.Maria Regina High School’s CEEB (College Entrance Examination Board) Code is 332287 .NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETYMembership is determined on the basis of a student’s character, service, leadership potential, and academic standing(cumulative average of 90%). Maria Regina High School: 2020 - 2021 Student/Parent HandbookTEXTBOOKSElectronic Textbooks: Some publishers provide electronic versions of their textbooks online. Students will be issueduser credentials and access codes for those available.State Aid Textbooks: The state provides aid to students in parochial schools through the loan of textbooks. In mostcases, Maria Regina directly distributes textbooks. In some cases, however, school districts directly distribute andcollect these books. The amount allocated to a student is determined by the New York State Textbook Loan Law. At theend of the academic year, students are required to pay for all badly damaged or lost books in full. If a student fails to fulfill this requirement, she will receive neither her report card in June nor her state aid booksin September. No senior will be awarded a diploma if she has not fulfilled this obligation. ALL textbooks and workbooks that are needed for academic courses MUST BE PURCHASED through theMaria Regina Bookstore except as specified for college level courses.State Aid Textbooks Policy State aid textbooks are loaned to students each school year by different school districts. Students are personally responsible f or the care and use of their textbooks. All state aid books must be covered. Upon receiving textbooks at the beginning of the school year, each student should write her name and year of usein the inside of each of her textbooks. Students are responsible to pay for lost or stolen textbooks. A fee will be charged if a textbook is damaged or written in. Damage fees are assessed at the discretion of theNYSTL Coordinator and start at 5.00. If a textbook is found and turned into the State Aid Room, the student must pay 1.00 to retrieve her textbook. At the end of the academic year, students are responsible to return state aid textbooks assigned to them during theassigned times to the NYSTL Coordinator in the State Aid Room. Books may not be returned by teachers, friends, or parents/guardians. Books should not be left in lockers, desks, or classrooms at the end of the school year. Said textbooks areconsidered lost or stolen and must be paid for by the student. Students will be charged a 25.00 late fee for textbooks returned after the assigned return date.DISCIPLINE & STUDENT CONDUCTDAILY ATTENDANCEDaily attendance and punctuality are critical factors for academic success. All students are expected to be in attendancewhenever school is in session. The following guidelines have been established by the administration of Maria ReginaHigh School in cooperation with regulations set forth by New York State.Absences: On the day of an absence, a parent/guardian must call the Dean of Students at 914-761-3300, ext. 3217, by 9 AM. New York State law requires that a parent/guardian must submit a written explanation for each day that a studentis absent. Notes are due to the student’s homeroom teacher within three (3) school days of returning to school.o If not, a detention will be issued. Absence note forms can be downloaded from the school website. If a student is absent three (3) or more days, parents or guardians must also submit a doctor’s written explanation including diagnosis - that includes the student’s clearance to return to school.Anticipated Absences:Non medical anticipated absences must be reported in writing to the Dean of Students at least one day prior to theabsence. All absences (full or half-day), excused or unexcused, will be recorded on the student's record, which may be usedfor college transcripts and employment references.8Scholarship Service Spirit

In cases of extended illness, all work and tests must be made up within 5 academic days, unlesscleared with the teacher and administration. Please note. If a student is absent on the day of a test or assignment due date two or more times, it will be up tothe teacher’s discretion as to whether or not the student may take a makeup test, etc.Medical Appointments:Parents and guardians should make every effort NOT to schedule doctor’s appointments for their daughters during schoolhours. However, if a student is absent or tardy because of a doctor’s appointment, a note must be brought to the MainOffice upon returning to school demonstrating proof of the medical appointment. If a student requires early dismissal,requests must be delivered to the Main Office before homeroom.Lateness to School Homeroom begins at 8:05 AM – any student reporting to homeroom after the homeroom bell must obtain a latepass from the Main Office. One detention will be issued to a student on the third day she is late to school. Lateness due to a doctor’s appointment requires a note from the doctor’s office to verify the visit. A parent/guardian must call or email the Dean of Students if they know that a student will be late to school. A lateness contract will be issued to students who are more than 6 days late to school.Excessive absence and/or lateness to school :All attendance issues will be addressed individually. After ten days absent, a letter will be sent home. If the patterncontinues, an attendance contract will be issued and additional consequences may include probationary status. The Deanof Students will meet with parents/guardians to determine a solution. A warning status may also be issued, and thesituation may warrant withdrawal at the end of the academic year.Participating in after school activities/functions:In order to participate in an after school function sponsored by or held at Maria Regina, a student must be in attendance atschool for a minimum of four academic periods.Midterm and Final Exams: Students who do not attend a midterm or final exam on the scheduled day will be given amakeup exam at the discretion of the teacher and administration.Early DismissalStudents who need to leave prior to scheduled dismissal, because there are no other alternatives, must meet the followingrequirements: Requests for early dismissal must be made by phone to the Main Office and in writing the day before they arerequired. Students must bring in an Early Dismissal Note (downloaded from the school website) signed by aparent/guardian with the time and reason for the early dismissal. Parents should make every effort not to schedule appointments for their daughters during the academic day.(Reasons for excused early dismissal are the same as those for excused absence.) Excessive requests for early dismissal or failure to follow the above protocol may result in detention.9Scholarship Service Spirit

Maria Regina High School: 2020 - 2021 Student/Parent HandbookSenior College Visit Guidelines:College visits are permitted for appointments with admission counselors and scheduled tours of college campuses. Three college visit days are permitted, not including orientation and accepted student days. Parents/Guardians must phone in the absence. Students must return to school with a letter verifying their visit from the college’s admissions office.Unexcused Absence from Class/TruancyNo student is permitted to exempt herself from any scheduled class or activity during the school day. Teachers areobliged to notify administration of any students who have been reported as present for homeroom and are missing fromtheir classes. Five detentions will be issued. Before the student is permitted to resume her daily classes, parents/guardians will be notified of the offense andthe implications of the incident discussed with them. The student is responsible for the work missed during her absence and will automatically receive a zero for anytest she may have missed. If truancy is repeated, further disciplinary action, including but not limited tosuspension or expulsion, will be taken.DISCIPLINEEvery Maria Regina student has the right to attend school in an atmosphere that is safe, non-violent, respectful, andconducive to academic and moral growth. At Maria Regina, any actions or words that obstruct or harm our positivelearning environment will result in a disciplinary response, which may include expulsion. The administration at MariaRegina reserves the right to proceed with expulsion proceedings if a student’s actions are deemed destructive,disrespectful, and/or contrary to our school’s philosophy. Disciplinary measures include, detention, in-schoolsuspension, contractual warnings/probation, and withdrawal/expulsion.A student who shows no behavioral improvement after having served detentions for multiple serious infractions againstschool policies as listed in this handbook may receive an in-school suspension and a change in disciplinary status.DisrespectMutual respect is expected of all students, especially in their relationships with the faculty, staff, and peers. At no timemay a student conduct herself in such a manner that demeans her dignity or that of others. Such behavior includesinsolence, insubordination to teachers, abusive language, lying/dishonest behavior, harassment, discrimination, the useof degrading words or gestures, inappropriate use of social media, and disrespect to other students. Necessarydisciplinary action will be taken against all such offenders. When appropriate, with the help of our Social Worker andadministration, restorative justice will be required in order to address the needs of a victim of any of these offensivebehaviors.FightingPhysical or verbal fighting is seen as a serious infraction of the values and expectations which are essential in a Catholicschool environment. Any students involved in a fight will be subject to disciplinary action which may include a two-dayschool suspension and being placed on a probationary status and/or expulsion.Bullying/CyberbullyingBullying behavior, including but not limited to non-verbal gestures, teasing, taunting, and any other acts of intimidationwill not be tolerated. Any student engaging in this sort of behavior, either in person or virtually, will be mandated to seeour school Social Worker. She may also be subject to disciplinary action (See Detention p.11) Failure to comply willresult in further disciplinary action, which may include suspension or expulsion.10Scholarship Service Spirit

Maria Regina High School: 2020 - 2021 Student/Parent HandbookDetention Detention is issued for infractions against school policies as listed in the Parent/Student Handbook. Detention will be served for one hour after school on a pre-announced day.(The day may be altered depending upon holiday schedules.) Students who are excused from detention will serve detention the following week. Students who are absent on a detention day will serve detention the next scheduled detention day. All detentions are final. Only the teacher or administrator who initially issued the detention may revoke it. Students issued three detentions for three or more infractions during the school year may receive an in-schoolsuspension and placement on warning status.
