DuPont Self-Adhered Flashing ProductsProductGeneral DuPont Tyvek WRB and Flashings SystemsInstallation PrinciplesThe primary elements of proper weather barrier systeminstallation for building envelopes are continuity, overlap, and fastening.Width6 inDuPont FlexWrap 9 inDuPont FlexWrap EZ2.75 inDuPont StraightFlash 9 inDuPont VersaFlange Continuity refers to establishing a continuous barrier to helpprevent bulk moisture from penetrating the wall system, tohelp direct bulk moisture out of the wall system, and to helpprevent air leakage from entering the building and affectingthe building’s energy efficiency. Continuity encompasses tapingseams, proper terminations at the roof-wall interface and thewall-to-foundation interface, and appropriate details at allpenetrations, windows, doors, pipes, ducts, etc.4 in6 in 4 in6 inDuPont Flashing Tape9 in12 inInstallation AccessoriesProductDuPont Tyvek TapeTypeQuantity2 in Bulk Pack6 rolls/bulk pack3 in Bulk PackDuPont Tyvek Metallized Tape2 in x 100 ft Rolls12 rolls/caseAvailable in 7/8 in, 1-1/4in, and 1-1/2 in lengths2,000/box3/8 in length2,016/boxDuPont Tyvek Wrap Cap Nails1 in electro-galvanizedring shank nail2,000/boxDuPont Tyvek Wrap Cap Screws2 in Wrap Cap Screws1,000/boxDuPont Tyvek Wrap Cap Staples orother cap staples for Stinger Cap StaplerDuPont Tyvek DrainVentRainscreen4 ft x 50 ft rollDuPont RainVent Battens5/8 in x 3/8 in x 8 ft40/packGreat Stuff Pro Window & DoorPolyurethane Foam SealantCan (reusable dispensinggun sold separately)20 ozGreat Stuff Pro Gaps & CracksPolyurethane Foam SealantCan (reusable dispensinggun sold separately)20 ozTower Residential Sealant(formerly DuPont ResidentialSealant)–– TRUFAST Walls Grip-Deck screwswith Thermal-Grip FastCap washers (TRUFAST Walls formerlyRodenhouse)DuPont Tyvek Protec Engineered Synthetic Roofing UnderlaymentsProductUV ExposureRoll SizeRoll WeightDuPont TyvekRoof Protector 3 Months42"x286'20 lbsTyvek Protec 1203 Months48"x250'25 lbsTyvek Protec 1606 Months48"x250'31 lbsTyvek Protec 2006 Months48"x250'36 lbs Overlap refers to the proper shingling of the building envelopecomponents on the wall. Much in the same way shingles areinstalled on a roof, it is important that the weather barriermembrane and flashing be properly overlapped so bulk wateris directed down and away from the wall. Cap Fasteners are important for both overall durability of theweather barrier system, and also for reducing the potential forwater penetration or air leakage at fastening points. If these basic principles are compromised, bulk water may enterthe wall system and cause damage over time. The areas aroundwindows or other wall penetrations are extremely vulnerable. Therefore, proper window and door flashing and integrationwith the WRB is critical to water management. The planewhere the WRB is placed is considered the drainage plane, andwindows and doors should be flashed in a method that enableswater to shed to the exterior of the drainage plane.DuPont FlexWrap offers protection at the sill (and head, where applicable) when installed per the guidance in theapplicable Installation Guidelines. This product is installed atthe sill/head to protect the vulnerable corners where waterdamage is most likely to occur. Installing head and jambflashing with DuPont Flashing Tape or DuPont StraightFlash after integral flanged windows are installed helps provideproper continuity between the window flange and the Tyvek WRB or sheathing. In this method, the window flange at the sillis not sealed to the WRB/sill flashing to provide a mechanismfor water to drain to the exterior should it penetrate thedrainage plane and accumulate at the sill. The same approach is used for non-flanged windows, suchas brick mold installations, where DuPont FlexWrap isfirst installed at the sill prior to installing the window. Inthis case, DuPont VersaFlange is installed directly to thebrick mold at the window jambs and head prior to windowinstallation in order to create a flange on the window thatcan be subsequently integrated to the sheathing and DuPont Tyvek WRB to establish contin-uity of the drainage plane.Alternatively, there is the option to address storefront/nonflanged window and door conditions using the "wrap the cavity"method in which the entire rough opening is sealed withflashing prior to the window or door installation.3

The ability to design a continuous and durable air barrier planedespite transitions such as roof assemblies intersecting exteriorwalls, windows, and other service penetrations ultimatelycontributes to the air leakage of the whole building. DuPontoffers the components necessary to construct an exterior airbarrier assembly which includes a collection of compatibleproducts that can be tied together to provide air tightnessfor the whole building enclosure. An airtight building helps prevent cold air infiltration inthe winter months, and moist warm air infiltration in thesummer months. Tyvek WRBs create an exterior air barrierthat contributes to overall air tightness and energy efficiencyand helps the conditioned air to stay inside of the building, minimizing energy loss. Each of the Tyvek WRB InstallationGuidelines provide requirements for air barrier installations.DuPont Building Envelope Solutions InstallationGuidelines and Warranty ConsiderationsProduct installation considerations for both the Tyvek WRBand the DuPont Self-Adhered Flashing Products for singlefamily residential buildings are covered in the DuPont Tyvek Water-Resistive and Air Barriers (WRB) and DuPont SelfAdhered Flashing Products Installation Guidelines For SingleFamily Residential Buildings documents. There are two versionsof the document to cover when the Tyvek WRB is installedin relation to the DuPont Self-Adhered Flashing Products atwindows and doors: Windows and Doors Installed AFTER the Tyvek WRB Windows and Doors Installed BEFORE the Tyvek WRBOverview of DuPont Installation Guidelines andPerformance RequirementsThe following paragraphs reference specific performance teststandards. For more information regarding these standards, see the Building Envelope Performance Requirements sectionwithin this document. DuPont categorizes structures into threeprimary groups:“Single-Family Residential Buildings” are defined as fullydetached one- or two-family structures, as well as townhousestructures not more than three stories above grade plane asdefined in the 2018 International Residential Code (IRC) SectionR101.2, both to the extent they are exclusively Residential Usebuilding structures.“Wood-Framed Multi-Family and Light Commercial Buildings”are defined by DuPont as the following (must meet ALL criteria):a. Constructed of wood-based structural exterior framing ofType III or Type V Construction* (IBC Chapter 6); andb. Does not exceed 2018 IBC max height (Table 504.3) forType V construction (70 ft.) or Type III construction (85 ft.),including allowances for Automatic Sprinkler height increase(IBC 504.1 and Table 504.4) and ‘podium‘ structures outlinedin the Special Provisions* (IBC Section 510); andc. Design requirements for the building envelope do notexceed air barrier performance of ASTM E1677 (10.8 psfstructural load, 65 mph equivalent wind load), and waterinfiltration resistance criteria of 6.24 psf (50 mph equivalentwind-driven rain) when tested in accordance with ASTME331, ASTM E1105, or equivalent4*Special Provisions (IBC Section 510) allows for a “horizontalbuilding separation”, or ‘podium’, to be built under the woodframed Type III or Type V building. The podium is typicallyconstructed of steel framing or concrete. Podium-style buildingsare included under “Wood-Framed Multi-Family and LightCommercial Buildings”,as long as all other definition criteria(a. through c. above) are met."Commercial and High-Performance Buildings of Any Height”are defined by DuPont as any of the following:a. Structures constructed of steel-based structural exteriorframing and any exterior sheathing, orb. Structures with exterior above grade walls constructed ofconcrete or concrete masonry units (CMU), orc. Structures of any height and construction type (includingany framing type) that are designated as high-performance.“High-performance” is defined as air barrier performanceexceeding ASTM E1677 and/or water infiltration resistancecriteria exceeding 6.24 psf when tested in accordance withASTM E331, ASTM E1105, or equivalent.NOTE: “Podium” style structures with wood-framed floors built above steel-framedor concrete/CMU floors are covered under “Wood-Framed Multi-Family and LightCommercial Buildings” unless they are “high-performance”.Overview of Warranty RequirementsIn addition to the criteria based on building type andperformance, there are requirements for Warranty eligibilitythat also must be met in the DuPont Building EnvelopeSolutions Products 10-Year Limited Warranty for Single-Family,Wood-Framed Multi-Family, and Light Commercial Buildings. This Warranty follows the definitions outlined for building typeand performance in the section above. Both the Product Warranty and the Product and Labor Warrantyoffered by DuPont are Limited Warranties effective for a periodof 10 years. The Product Warranty covers repair or replacementof defective DuPont Building Envelope Solutions Products onlyand does not cover repair and replacement of other damagedmaterials. In addition to replacement of defective weatherbarrier materials, the Product and Labor Warranty coversreasonable construction repair costs to correct any problemthat arises solely out of the failure of the applicable DuPontBuilding Envelope Solutions Product. The DuPont 10-Year Limited Warranties are directly tied tothe DuPont Installation Guidelines. The applicable InstallationGuidelines must be followed in order to be eligible for theProduct and Labor component of the DuPont Building EnvelopeSolutions Products 10-Year Limited Warranty for Single-Family,Wood-Framed Multi-Family, and Light Commercial Buildings. This section provides guidance on choosing the applicableInstallation Guideline and installation details for eligibility forboth the Product and Labor Components of the 10-Year LimitedWarranties.

Temporary fasteningmethods can be used. See Temporary Fastening section of Installation Guidelines for more information. In order to be eligible for the Product and Labor componentsof the Warranty, DuPont Building Envelope Solutions Productsmust be used in “all applicable areas” of the structure, asindicated in the Installation Guidelines. For example, if acombination of DuPont Tyvek WRBs and other manufacturer’sbuilding wraps were used on the same building, the buildingwould not be eligible for the Product and Labor components ofthe Warranty. One exception that highlights the definition of “allapplicable areas” is a building with a combination of ExteriorInsulation Finish Systems (EIFS) cladding and at least one othertype of cladding. EIFS manufacturers often require the use ofa specific WRB as a part of the EIFS system; therefore, Tyvek WRBs would not be applicable behind these EIFS products. Inthe other areas of the building that do not have EIFS cladding,a Tyvek WRB would be required on the remainder of thebuilding for eligibility for the Product and Labor componentof the Warranty. If a building is constructed with a flashing detail not covered inthe Installation Guidelines, general drainage principles shouldbe used. The DuPont Tyvek Specialist Network (described onpage 7) is available to help evaluate whether a detail meetsthe criteria for the applicable DuPont Installation Guidelines. If there is any question regarding a detail and its compliancewith the DuPont Installation Guidelines for Product and LaborWarranty eligibility, the Tyvek Specialist should be contactedprior to installation of the DuPont Products. The Warranty may cover only the Tyvek WRB, or both theDuPont Tyvek WRB Products and DuPont Self-AdheredFlashing Products. If applicable, the Warranty may also coverDuPont Tyvek DrainVent Rainscreen or DuPont Tyvek FluidApplied Products installed as part of a hybrid detail. In order to be eligible for the Product and Labor componentof the Warranty for the Tyvek WRB, the Tyvek WRB mustbe installed in accordance with the applicable InstallationGuidelines, including the proper overlap, shingling, tapedseams, fasteners, fastener schedule, terminations, etc. and allother terms of the DuPont Building Envelope Solutions 10-YearLimited Warranty process must be followed. For eligibility for the Product and Labor Warranty for the Tyvek WRB specifically, DuPont Self-Adhered Flashing Products donot have to be used for flashing doors, windows, and/or othercomponents that penetrate the DuPont Tyvek Building Wrapas long as the alternate or competitive products meet thespecifications set out in the DuPont Installation Guidelines.– DuPont Tyvek WRBs are not applicable under EIFS cladding. In order to be eligible for the Product and Labor component ofthe Warranty for the DuPont Self-Adhered Flashing Products,DuPont Tyvek Building Wrap Products must be used andinstalled in accordance with the applicable InstallationGuidelines. The DuPont Self-Adhered Flashing Products mustbe installed in accordance with the applicable InstallationGuidelines and all other terms of the DuPont Building EnvelopeSolutions 10-Year Limited Warranty process must be followed.DuPont Tyvek WRB SelectionWhen considering the Product and Labor component ofthe Warranty, DuPont Tyvek HomeWrap , DuPont Tyvek StuccoWrap , DuPont Tyvek DrainWrap are typically usedwhen following the Installation Guidelines for Single-FamilyResidential Buildings. DuPont Tyvek CommercialWrap andDuPont Tyvek CommercialWrap D can be used with any ofthe installation guidelines described above and for Warrantyeligibility, but these products are typically used on highperformance commercial products and follow the InstallationGuidelines for Buildings Greater than 4 Stories and HighPerformance Installations of any Height.5

Air Barrier InstallationThe Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index is a commonindustry method of rating the energy efficiency of new andexisting homes. As a part of the HERS Index rating process,a blower door test is completed, which determines the airtightness of a home. As air tightness of a home increases, the home’s energy efficiency will increase, resulting in alower HERS Index Score. An air tight home prevents cold airinfiltration in the winter months, and moist warm air infiltrationin the summer months. DuPont Tyvek WRBs create an exteriorair barrier that contributes to overall air tightness and energyefficiency and helps the conditioned air to stay inside of thehome, minimizing energy loss.FasteningFastening requirements differ based on the type of buildingin the applicable DuPont Installation Guidelines, both in typeof fastener and in fastener spacing. Refer to the individualinstallation guidelines for the complete details. The Installation Guidelines for Single-Family ResidentialBuildings were designed for nailable substrates, i.e. wood. The typical fastener for these guidelines is a 1" DuPont Tyvek Wrap Cap Staple, Cap Nail or other manufacturer’s equivalentcap fastener, 2" Tyvek Wrap Cap Screws were designed to beused in combination with fiber-faced exterior gypsum sheathingand metal studs; however, they can also be used for woodframed/sheathed assemblies.Alternative fasteners, such as cladding fasteners, brick ties orothers, may also be used as a means as attachment. Flashingpatches can be installed behind these fasteners for extraperformance for air and water holdout, as described in thesection above. In addition, temporary means of attachment areincluded in the Temporary Fastening section of each InstallationGuideline. Temporary fasteners are sometimes installeddue to the fact that the permanent fasteners – the claddingfasteners – will be installed very soon after. If temporary meansof WRB attachment are used, it is important to note there isan increased risk of WRB blow off or damage of the WRB.Therefore, DuPont recommends installing the permanentfasteners as soon as practically possible. Temporary fasteningmethods can include adhesive/primer installed in vertical stripsalong stud lines, recommended fasteners installed at a reducedschedule, or other methods. Finally, DuPont Tyvek Wrap Cap Fasteners, or recommendedfasteners, should not be installed where DuPont Self-AdheredFlashing Products or DuPont Tyvek Tape will be applied toavoid interference with the adhesion of these products.Tyvek Wrap Cap Fasteners, or recommended fasteners, canbe installed over DuPont Self-Adhered Flashing Products.Refer to the applicable Installation Guidelines for moreinformation.6UV ExposureFor Warranty eligibility, DuPont requires DuPont Tyvek HomeWrap , Tyvek DrainWrap , Tyvek StuccoWrap , andTyvek ThermaWrap LE be covered within 4 months (120days) of installation. DuPont requires that DuPont Tyvek CommercialWrap and Tyvek CommercialWrap D be coveredwithin 9 months (270 days) of installation. DuPont Self-AdheredFlashing Products also have a UV exposure limit. DuPont FlexWrap and DuPont StraightFlash should be coveredwithin nine months (270 days) and DuPont Flashing Tapeshould be covered within four months (120 days).PrimerAdverse weather conditions or cold temperatures (below25 F, -4 C) may require use of a primer to promote adhesionof DuPont Self-Adhered Flashing Products to most commonbuilding materials. Concrete, masonry, and fiber faced exteriorgypsum board require the use of a recommended adhesive/primer. Primer is not required when DuPont Self-AdheredFlashing Products are being applied to wood, except whenthere are cold temperatures as described above.Refer to the Technical Bulletin Chemical Compatibility orRepresentative Building Sealants, DuPont Tyvek CommercialBuilding Envelope Solutions

and Finish Systems (EIFS) Clad Wall Assemblies. DuPont Tyvek StuccoWrap - Used in applications with a two layer WRB system for traditional stucco or as a single WRB for EIFS applications. Designed with a grooved texture to provide enhanced drainage and offers a drainage efficiency of 98% per ASTM E2273.
