Mr. and Mrs. Philip Schulz SchusterDriscollSeasons and Transitions in theMcLean Game RefugeThis past summer, Steven Paine, Director ofthe McLean Game Refuge, welcomed andmentored his successor, Connor Hogan, beforeretiring in December. As land steward of theGame Refuge, Steve followed in the footstepsof Senator McLean’s trusted friend and Pequottribe caretaker, Amos E. George, and his twosons, Henry and Amos A. George.1981Much has changed under Steve’s stewardship, and much will continue to change. WhenSteve first arrived in 1981 - coyotes and turkeyswere rare, while bears and ravens were absentaltogether. The Game Refuge was also 1,000acres smaller than it is today.TodayAt 4,400 acres, the McLean Game Refuge isnow among the largest wildlife conservationareas in Connecticut. Connecticut has only 107state Wildlife Management Areas totalingtogether 32,000 acres. The average size totalsjust under 300 acres – with two NationalWildlife Areas totaling less than 2,000 acres.McLean is also among the largest privateforests in New England. Because McLean isalso contiguous to large core forests includingEnders State Forest, it is of vital importance forwildlife. And, you’ll find some of the tallestpine trees in the state with many toweringover 130 feet tall.Going ForwardAn extensive forest inventory study of theentire Refuge is underway and will provideunusually-detailed information on terrain andland use history. With this information, Connorwill work with the McLean Board of Directorsto develop a strategic plan for forestmanagement in the coming decade.
