The physicaltherapist providestherapeutic services toindividuals of all ages withmovement impairments,musculoskeletal,neurological, sensorimotor,cardiovascular, and otherphysiological dysfunctions.Physical therapists may beemployed in hospitals andextended care facilities,ambulatory clinics, schoolsystems and sportsmedicine centers. Theymay also be self-employedprofessionals in privatepractice.About the DPT at Hunter:The Program is an entrylevel post-baccalaureateclinical doctorate (DPT)degree curriculum.The Commission onAccreditation in PhysicalTherapy Education of theAmerican Physical TherapyAssociation has granted thisprogram Full Accreditationstatus through 2016. The lastre-accreditation site visit wasextremely positive withrecommendations forprogram enhancement. Theprogram has beenaccredited since 1971.Alumni have achieved apassing rate on the NationalLicensing Examination equalto or above the nationalaverage. Overall passingrate is typically 100% foreach graduating class. Thefull-time faculty are active inmany facets of the PhysicalTherapy Profession. Allfaculty members areengaged in research and/orpublishing in peer-reviewedjournals. Faculty membershave an average of 24 yearsof teaching experience andover 31 years of clinicalexperience. Admission Requirements1. Applicants must have completed a bachelor’sdegree (BA or BS) from an accredited four-yearinstitution by the end of the spring semester prior toentry. If you have taken courses in a non-accreditedinstitution in or outside the U.S., these courses will notbe accepted as equivalent to Hunter Collegecourses, and will not be accepted as helping tomeet the number of credits required for earning abachelor’s degree or as counting toward ourprerequisites. Even if another U.S. college acceptsthose credits, we will not. For example, if you havetaken 30 credits abroad or in the U.S. within a nonaccredited institution, these credits will not beaccepted as meeting the minimum of 120 credits tohave earned a bachelor’s degree, even if you weregranted a bachelor’s degree by another college inthe U.S. Be sure the credentials you are paying forare valid elsewhere.Due to the increasing qualifications of our applicants,an undergraduate cumulative grade point average(GPA) of 3.3 to 3.5 and above will increase youradmission possibilities. If a course is repeated, bothgrades are used in GPA calculation.2. Two semesters of Anatomy & Physiology* with lab(e.g., Anatomy & Physiology; Biol 120, 122)3. Basic Life Support by the American HeartAssociation (212-878-5900, www.americanheart.org)OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certification by theRed Cross (212-787-1000, www.nyredcross.org). Anadvantage of taking CPR through the American HeartAssociation is renewal every two years, not annually. Youmust submit a copy of your CPR card to the PhysicalTherapy Program at the address above.10. Two on-line letters of recommendation. We suggest atleast one be written by a physical therapist. Formal letters ofrecommendation attached to a completed clinicalexperience form will be considered one letter ofrecommendation plus documentation required of theclinical experience. The online application process requiresLOR's be submitted electronically (on-line) and requires youtype in the email address for those you will list asrecommenders. Include an email address for eachrecommender even if you are submitting a printed LOR.Your application will be considered incomplete withoutthese email addresses being inserted.11. Documented clinical experience of at least 100 hours inthe United States under the supervision of a licensedphysical therapist, with a minimum of 50 hours in ahospital-based or rehabilitation setting. See documentedexperience for additional information on submitting aClinical Experience requirement. You cannot complete allof your clinical experience in a private practice! The mostcommon error made by applicants is not fully meeting thisrequirement by November 1st.12. Filing of the Hunter College Graduate AdmissionsOnline Application. The online application becomesavailable approximately August 15th. You can use this linkto access the issions.Use the Fall tab for applying. There is no tab for programsthat begin in the summer. The deadline for all applicationmaterials is NOVEMBER 1ST including transcripts and allclinical experience form(s). Apply early! Payment of theapplication fee is required.13. The new (2012) GRE is required and scores must beforwarded to the Hunter College Graduate AdmissionsOffice (Code # 2301). We do not accept scores from theprevious version of the GRE (before the Fall of 2012). If youare first taking the exam this fall, be sure to indicate whenyou have taken the GRE's and be sure we get the scoressent to the Admissions Office ASAP. Applicants invited for interviews will write an essayabout a topic chosen by the DPT faculty on the day of theinterview.15. More Admission InformationThe bachelor’s degreerequirement for entry isbased upon the CAPTEcriteria which mandatesthat physical therapyprograms are “ built on abalance of course work insocial sciences,humanities, and naturalsciences, which isappropriate in depth andbreadth, to develop theability in students to thinkindependently, to weightvalues, to understandfundamental theory, andto develop skill for clinicalpractice, including criticalthinking andcommunication.”Meeting the minimumrequirements does notguarantee acceptanceto the program, which isbased, by necessity, onthe limitations of spaceand resources. Clinical Experience RequirementsDocumented clinical experience of a minimum100 hours under supervision of a licensed physicaltherapist in the United States is required beforeapplying to the program; (minimum of 50 hoursmust be in a hospital based or rehabilitationsetting). Inquire at any hospital aboutvolunteering in their Physical TherapyDepartment to gain this clinical experience.The Clinical Experience Form (see attached)documenting completion of the 100 hours mustbe received by the Department of PhysicalTherapy NO LATER THAN November 1st.The clinical experience must be obtained with alicensed Physical Therapist in a Physical TherapyDepartment and completed by the sametherapist. Foreign trained physical therapists, orindividuals obtaining clinical experience outsidethe U.S., should refer to the section below forInternational Students.The Hunter College DPTfaculty supports thephilosophy of aninternationally renownedphysical therapist,Florence Kendall, PT,FAPTA. In presenting thesecond annual John HPMaley Lecture1 duringthe 1997 APTA ScientificMeeting and Exposition,she discussed the needfor evidence-based(scientifically-based)practice and indicatedthat one of the mostinnovative ways foreducational programs tolead the way is to getback to basics. “Thebasics are the foundationfrom which allinnovations shoulddevelop and areessential for furtherlearning and discovery.”( Kendall, F. We recommend that you try to select a health care facility having a physical therapyservice, which treats a variety of disability groups and ages.Your participation in the Physical Therapy Department can be either on a paid or voluntary basis. Werequire a minimum of 100 hours of exposure of which at least 50 hours are obtained in an acute carehospital or rehabilitation setting.
