Guardianship is one option that is available when a personhas significant problems managing financial affairs orpersonal care. Guardianships are granted only when aperson is legally incapacitated, which generally means theindividual has demonstrated an inability to manage property, financial affairs, or manage his or her own nutrition, housing, health, or physical safety. Because guardianship deprives anindividual of significant personal rights, it is considered thelast resort.Guardianship services may be provided by individualguardians or agencies. Washington State has createda Certified Professional Guardian Program, in order toachieve the greatest protection for the estates and affairs ofincapacitated persons.
