Mimiaga, p.14My federally funded studies involve a variety of populations, including sexual and genderminorities (LGBT individuals) and other key populations and marginalized groups, including adolescents, injection drug users, MSM, heterosexual men and women, individuals who engage in transactional sex, transgender women, substance users, individuals in resource limited settings globally, and refugee populations. In addition to my domestic research program, I have ongoing global public health research studies acrossmultiple continents focused on HIV primary and secondary prevention. These countries include:Quito,EcuadorPicture courtesy of Rose Closson, former mentee and current PhD candidate at the London School of Hygieneand Tropical Medicine, University of London. My research in the area of HIV prevention is internationally known through my success in NIH fundingfor my R-level grants, as well as my participation in the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease(NIAID) funded biomedical clinical trials networks (mentioned above under examples of recognition): the HIVPrevention Trials Network (HPTN), HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN), and Center for AIDS ResearchNetwork of Integrated Clinical Systems (CNICS), and the adolescent trials network for prevention of HIV(ATN).Extramural Funding I have been the PI/MPI of 24 federal and other foundation research grants awarded by theNational Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, university programs, and foundations. These awards are detailed below. These include: Ten NIH R grants (three R01s, four R21s, two R34s, one R03); an NIHCompetitive Supplement to an R01; two Harvard Center for AIDS Research (NIH) grants; aHarvard Catalyst grant; two CDC U01 grants; a grant funded by the Ragon Institute of MGH,MIT, and Harvard; a Brown University SEED grant; a Watson Institute, Brown University pilotgrant; and several state Department of Public Health grants. I am also a Co-Investigator on several NIH R grants and Co-Investigator/Protocol Member ofnumerous multisite, large-scale network (HPTN, HVTN, CNICS, and ATN) funded studies whereI contribute substantially as an expert in the areas of epidemiology (design/methods contributions),behavioral science, substance abuse treatment, HIV prevention, global health, as well as researchscholarship.

Mimiaga, p.15Current Funded Grants as PI (Total Award Amount Provided)2015-2017Role: PINational Institute on Drug 376,989(MPI: Grelotti)Abuse (R21DA039857-01)Epidemiology of HIV antiretroviral exposure from whoonga use in South AfricaSome people are exposed to HIV antiretroviral medication through recreational use. Thisemerging phenomenon poses a significant obstacle to efforts to address the global HIVpandemic. Any antiretroviral exposure from recreational use may increase rates ofantiretroviral-resistant HIV strains. This and any diversion of antiretroviral medicationfor recreational use will increase the cost of delivering this life-saving care. Theproposed research will document antiretroviral exposure from the use of whoonga, adrug cocktail in South Africa that may contain antiretroviral medication and illicit drugs. It will also inform future research to link recreational antiretroviral use to antiretroviralresistance among HIV-infected individuals who have yet to initiate HIV treatment, aswell as promote the design of culturally appropriate interventions.2014-2019National Institute of 2,907,259Mental Health(R01MH100627-01A1)Fostering resilience to psychosocial and HIV risk in Indian MSMThis study is testing the efficacy of a self-acceptance-based intervention in comparisonto HIV / VCT on co-primary outcomes: STI incidence and reduced episodes ofunprotected anal sex among HIV-infected and uninfected MSM in Chennai andMumbai, India. The incremental cost-effectiveness of the intervention and HIV/STIVCT relative to HIV/STI VCT alone is being assessed, considering individual andpublic health benefits as well as downstream cost-savings due to HIV infections averted.2014-2017Role: PI(MPI: Safren)Role: PINational Institute of 672,360(MPI: Clark /Mental HealthReisner)(R34MH104072-01)TransPrEP: Social network-based PrEP adherence for transgender women in PeruThis research aims to develop a social network-based intervention to promote PrEPadherence among PrEP naïve transgender women at risk for HIV infection in Lima,Peru. Once the intervention is developed through multiple forms of qualitative methods,an RCT pilot will be conducted randomizing by social network-based clusters oftransgender women. All participants will be provided with daily Truvada for the studyperiod. The intervention includes a mix of individual counseling, group (peer) basedworkshops, and social network interactions.

Mimiaga, p.162011-2016Role: PI(MPI: Garofalo)National Institute of 4,530,580Mental Health(R01MH094323-02)HIV prevention intervention for young transgender womenThe purpose of this study is to test the efficacy of a uniquely targeted HIV riskreduction intervention for young transgender women (YTW), ages 16 to 24, at risk forHIV acquisition or transmission. We will enroll 375 at risk YTW, ages 16-24; twofifths of the sample (N 150) randomized to the intervention will participate in the 6session group-based and manualized Life Skills intervention; two-fifths (N 150) willbe randomized to the standard-of-care condition; and one- fifth will be randomized tothe time-matched attention control condition (N 75) and receive standard healthpromotion information in a group-based multi-session format.***Competitive supplement, 2014-2015, NIMH, 100,000 (included above in totalcosts)This supplement is to adapt the Life Skills intervention to transgender MSM.2013-2018Role: PI(MPI: Stephenson /Garofalo)National Institute of Child 3,012,674Health and HumanDevelopment(R01HD075655-01A1)CVCTPlus: A Couples-based approach to linkage to care and ARV adherenceStudies suggest that the majority of incident HIV infections among MSM areattributable to sex with a main male sex partner; however, HIV preventioninterventions that target male-male couples are lacking. As adherence to ART ismodifiable, and levels of peer support have been shown to increase ART adherence, this current study proposes to use CVCT combined with dyadic adherence counseling(“CVCTPlus”) to improve linkage to care, retention in care, ART adherence and viralsuppression among 250 (total N 500) HIV serodiscordant male-male couples acrossAtlanta, Boston, and Chicago. Each couple (125 per arm) will be followed for 48months, with study visits every six months.2013-2016Role: PI(MPI: Biello)National Institute on Drug 465,300Abuse (R21DA03511301A1)HIV risk for MSM sex workers: A social, sexual and drug network simulationstudyThis is a longitudinal epidemiological study of MSM sex worker networks inMassachusetts to identify protective and risk factors that affect HIV transmissiondynamics. Longitudinal data will enhance our understanding of how contemporarysocial, sexual, and drug abuse network characteristics contribute to increased HIV andSTI spread among MSM sex workers. The information gained will be used to develop asimulation model to examine which prevention modality (e.g., PrEP, etc.) wouldimpact decreased HIV incidence most successfully.

Mimiaga, p.172016-2017Role: PIBrown University, OVPR 50,000Research Seed FundAwardOptimizing PrEP uptake & adherence among stimulant using MSMThis study is to further develop and pilot test— in a two-arm randomized controlledtrial (RCT)—a PrEP adherence intervention for stimulant-abusing MSM who are atrisk for HIV infection against a standard of care condition. Informed by our formativeresearch and addiction treatment experience with stimulant-abusing MSM, ourinterdisciplinary investigator team designed the “Pepped-on-PrEP” package—acounseling and problem-solving PrEP adherence intervention that addresses stimulantabuse, and associated factors, as barriers to optimal PrEP adherence. This pilot-RCTwill assess the feasibility/acceptability of the “Pepped-on-PrEP” package, as well aspreliminary efficacy, laying the groundwork for the next step of intervention testing—afull-scale efficacy trial.2016-2017Role: PI(MPI: Biello)Brown University, 10,000Watson InstituteCollaboration GrantsExploratory research to reduce health inequalities among HIV positive adolescents inBrazilThis is an exploratory research study to inform an intervention for HIV infectedadolescents, ages 15 to 24, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We will conduct formativeresearch with community advisory board members, key informants, and HIV infectedadolescents to inform the adaptation of a behavioral intervention for improvingadherence to antiretroviral therapy among Brazilian youth. The resulting integratedcounseling- and technology-based HIV medication adherence intervention package(called “Passos Positivos”) will address inequalities among diverse ethnicities, sexualand gender minorities, and class by addressing the particular structural (e.g.,transportation to clinic visits, perceived healthcare discrimination) and individual-level(e.g., social support, psychosocial problems) barriers to adherence faced by adolescentsin this setting. Passos Positivos will serve as the basis for a new NIH R application.Current Funded Grants as Co-I2010-2016Role: Co-INational Institute of Mental Health(U01AR057954-01)PI: Heidi CranePatient reported outcomes in routine clinical care of patients infected with HIVThis project's goal is to improve medical care processes and patient outcomes inclinical practice settings using routine collection of patient-reported outcomes (PROs)administered by computerized adaptive tests (CATs).
