OverviewThis continuing education activity will be highlyinteractive in that it is a case-based practical approachto confronting the issues for total joint surgeons. Areasof discussion will cover knee, hip and shoulder totaljoint arthroplasty, emerging technologies, perioperativepatient management, outpatient joint replacements andchallenging case presentations. A keynote speaker willdiscuss issues around payment models in total jointarthroplasty and what to expect in the future. Facultyand participants are invited to bring cases for discussion.Participants are invited to interact with faculty andseek answers that they can implement in their practicesettings.Target AudienceThe intended target audience for this forum isorthopaedic surgeons who have expressed the need forupdates in total hip, knee and shoulder procedures inorder to stay current practice.Needs AssessmentOne fourth of all adults in the United States haveexperienced frequent knee pain and hip pain, most oftencaused by osteoarthritis, which limits mobility. Babyboomers are seeking to stay active as they age whichhas increased the demand for surgery. It is anticipatedthat total hip and knee surgery will increase 673 percentby 2030. The young athlete is also experiencingincreased pain, fractures and sprains associated with theshoulder. Orthopaedic surgeons must continue to updatecurrent practices to meet this ever increasing demand.The presentation of advanced techniques, evidencebased research, new materials, pain managementprotocols, infection prevention and outcome data onpatients who have total joint surgery is essential. Inaddition, reimbursement has become an issue withbundled payments and other new payment models fortotal joint procedures.Professional Practice GapsCurrent literature, expert faculty and evaluation ofprevious courses indicate that the orthopaedic surgeon islacking in knowledge of issues related to reimbursementand legislation related to the practice of medicine. Thereis a need to review protocols for pain management andinfection prevention. The orthopaedic surgeon mustcontinue to review the most current approaches to hip,knee and shoulder surgery, mitigation of risks relatedto product liability, new algorithms and patient carestrategies.Methodology-FormatThe format for this course is case-based discussion.Each panel member will begin the presentation with acase from which the audience will have opportunity toask question and interact with the faculty. Each memberof the panel will identify key takeaways for each topic.Attendees are invited to bring cases for discussion.ObjectivesUpon completion of this course, the surgeon should beable to:1. Discuss issues related to total joint arthroplasty(hip, knee and shoulder) approaches and surgicaltechniques.2. Describe protocols for intraoperative management ofthe patient preoperatively and postoperatively.3. Critique the challenges with new payment modelsbeing implemented in various facilities and how thiswill impact reimbursement in the future.4. Describe protocols and treatment options for totaljoint replacement patients who are experiencingpreoperative pain.5. Identify the why, who and how to of performingoutpatient joint surgery.6.
