He began hisstudies at La Laguna, and continued at La Escuela Superior deBellas Artes de Madrid. The Jardín de Cactus was the last workof Cesar Manrique and is a symbol of the island’s history withmore than 10,000 cacti set in a converted amphitheatre-likequarry. Cochineal beetles live in the cacti, and their larvae areused to produce the natural food coloring of the same name.Visit the Cesar Manrique Foundation, custodian of the worksof the artistic genius. It is housed in what was Cesar Manrique’sown residence—El Taro de Tahiche. Taro is an island word for aconstruction of stones placed upon each other without the useof cement. The house was built in 1968 on unusual terrain, overfive lava bubbles and a jameo—a collapsed volcanic passage. This region encompasses many differenteco-systems including mangroves, savannah and dense forest.You will likely see vultures gathered together for their morningbreakfast and a variety of African birds as well as some Europeanbirds, like the pied wagtail, spending time here as resident tourists! Hopefully, you will see some species of wild birds that hatchin Europe and summer here in Gambia—lily trotters, WestAfrican river eagle, black heron and Goliath heron. Stroll through the city and enjoytime at leisure before you continue to Jerez de la Frontera—oneof the most illustrious cities of southern Spain. The Romanscalled Jerez “Asta Regia;” it was later controlled by the Emir(or Caliph) of Cordoba; and finally, it was conquered by KingAlfonso X and returned to the Spanish fold.
