CONTINUING EDUCATION SEMINARSCONTINUING EDUCATION SEMINARSThe Center for Government Services (CGS) at RutgersUniversity assists the Division of Codes and Standards inthe New Jersey Department of Community Affairs in offeringmore than 325 seminars required by law for ConstructionCode Enforcement Officials, Technical Assistants, and MultipleDwelling Inspectors.The mission of the Continuing Education Program is to furtherthe professional development of code enforcement personnelby providing quality educational offerings through continuingeducation programs for licensed inspectors and their supportstaff. Together, our state and local governments are committedto protecting the health, safety, and welfare of all peoplethroughout our communities to ensure that New Jerseycontinues to be a safe and desirable place to live.HOW TO USE THIS BROCHUREFor your convenience, we have included a grid of the seminarsorganized by the course number. It indicates duplicate andreciprocal credits, as well as if the seminar is available online.Credit is applicable only to those areas marked in the grid ornoted in the course description. If you are unsure of the creditavailable and its applicability to your license, please confirmwith the DCA prior to registering. The table also contains thepage number where you can find full seminar descriptionsalong with dates and locations. All continuingeducation requirements must be met within the regularlyscheduled program.Make sure you are selecting seminars that meet CEUrequirements for your license.Seminar Limits: Unless your license expires on July 31, 2018,you will be limited to either two seminars or one per subcode inwhich you hold a license (whichever is greater). This will giveeveryone an equal opportunity to register. If you are interestedin registering for additional seminars, you should call one weekbefore the seminar start date.Unlicensed Registrants: Architects, engineers, builders,and other unlicensed interested parties may attend seminarsfor a fee of 125 for one-day seminars and 250 for two-dayseminars. Those interested parties who wish to participate maycall anytime after the third week of registration.NO. 1

CENTER FOR GOVERNMENT SERVICESRegistration Procedure:1. Select a first and second choice from the seminarsoffered. In case your first choice is filled, you can register foryour alternate selection. The DCA staff person respondingto your email or phone call can answer questions aboutthe fulfillment of your education requirement for the currentlicensing cycle.2. Email the DCA Education Unit at education.unit@dca.nj.gov. Be sure you indicate your full name, your codeenforcement license number, the course code, location anddate of each seminar you have selected. Please note first andsecond choices. You will receive an emailed confirmation ofyour registration.3. You may also call the DCA Education Unit at 609-9847820 between the hours of 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Be sure tohave the following information ready: your code enforcementlicense number, the course code, location and date of eachseminar you have selected.Confirmation: Confirmations are mailed approximatelytwo weeks before the date of each seminar. If you have notreceived the confirmation one week prior to the seminar, callthe Education Unit at 609-984-7820 to ensure that your nameis on the roster. Walk-in registrations are not permitted.Duplicate Credit: You have the option of receiving duplicatecredit for certain seminars designated with a D prefix. At signin, you will be asked to indicate whether or not you wish toreceive duplicate credit.Reciprocal Credit: The Division of Fire Safety will awardreciprocal credit for those seminars marked with O. In order toreceive reciprocal credit, you must provide your Division of FireSafety certification number at sign in. The Board of ElectricalContractors will award reciprocal credit for those seminarsmarked with . For some electrical seminars, the approval ofthe Board of Electrical Contractors is currently pending. OnlineGoToTraining electrical seminars are not approved by theBoard for reciprocal credit. In order to receive reciprocal credit,you must provide a picture ID and your current contractor’slicense at sign in.Online Seminars: Seminars marked with are availableonline. Online GoToTraining seminars are identical in contentand timing to our in person training programs (5 hours, 0.5CEUs). Registration for the full day seminars will begin at 8:00AM; the seminar instruction will begin at 8:30 AM and concludeno later than 4:00 PM. Evening sessions are scheduledbetween 6:30 PM and 9:00 PM with registration starting at6:00 PM. Be sure that you can allot that entire period of timeto attend. You MUST log into GoToTraining at least ½ hourprior to start.All seminars are conducted entirely over the internet. YouMUST have operating microphone and speakers on yourcomputer to receive credit (no telephone participants), as youwill not only need the speakers to hear the presentation, butalso will have the opportunity to ask questions of the instructorand have them answered live as with any of our otherseminars. Please plan your spring semester accordingly.Special Inspector Certifications: Certified special inspectorsshould register only for specific seminars meeting thecontinuing education requirements for their area of certification.Courses applicable to and counting towards renewal of aStructural Welding and/or Steel Bolting special inspectorcertification are identified by “SS” as noted in the grid. Likewise,Structural Concrete and Masonry special inspector seminarscan be identified by “SC,” EIFS special inspector courses will benoted as “SE,” and, finally, Spray-Applied Fireproofing specialinspector courses are denoted by “SF” in the grid. They are alsospecifically identified in the course descriptions.Cancellation Policy: If you are unable to attend a seminar forwhich you registered, you must call the Education Unit to cancelyour reservation as soon as possible. Failure to inform of yourcancellation may result in future registrations being restricted.Digital/Electronic Devices: The use of cell phones isdisruptive in seminars. Digital/electronic devices are permittedonly if you are using them for class work.Seminar Times: All seminars begin at 8:30 a.m. and concludeby 4 p.m. You must arrive before 9 a.m. in order to be admittedto the seminar. Students who miss a substantial portion of aseminar or who leave early, for any reason, will not receivecredit. Please bring your seminar confirmation card and UCC/HMD licenses with you to the seminar.Dress Code: All seminar participants should follow a businesscasual dress code. Many of the conference facilities will notallow students wearing shorts and flip-flops on their premises.Violating a facility dress code may be cause for dismissal fromthe course.ICC Preferred Provider Program: The DCA/RU educationalprogram is now an approved preferred provider with theInternational Code Council (ICC). The goal of the programis to support our licensees and other interested parties whoalso maintain ICC certifications. The use of ICC or PreferredProvider training is required as a condition of all ICCcertification renewals. Our participation in the program willmean that our courses will be approved to also meet the ICCcertification renewal requirements. Program participants neednot do anything different: our seminar completion certificateswill include our provider number (1091) as well as the ICCcourse number associated with the approval.
