Welcome to ourYearly Annual Report2018

Dear Friends,2018.What a great year for kids and for the arts in our community! In our annual report we highlight the impact we’ve made on children’s lives. All the whilebehind the scenes, we’ve been positioning Jackson School of the Arts for growth. Thisgrowth is possible because you’ve been with us all along.Just as everyday we encourage kids to discover their potential, as an organization, webelieve we have to discover our potential. That is why in late 2017 we embarked on acapital campaign to create a dynamic arts center, and at the close of our fiscal year we aregetting closer to the finish line. The real impact you help us make is measured one child at a time. Each child we serve hastheir own compelling story of how and why participation in the arts has impacted their life. When you support Jackson School of the Arts, you are supporting many individual childrenwho because of you gain a little confidence, learn a new skill or in many cases have a bitof respite from a not so childlike environment at home. Here children work with caringadults, discover their creative potential and have the opportunity to discover their best self.Imagine the impact we can make with room to grow our programming and space to serveeven more!We invite you to dream big with us for children, for families, for Jackson and for our State! Please give today and give generously to support the children we serve today and tohelp us create a Dynamic Arts Center in a Dynamic Downtown tomorrow.Kim CurtisEXECUTIVE DIRECTOR2Like us on Facebook so you can follow along and learn moreabout the capital campaign at jacksonarts.org/donate

In 2017-18, 37 dance, art and theaterinstructors impacted lives.Program Supplies & MarketingIncludes purchasing costumes for our students so the high price of those glittery tu-tus don’tbecome a barrier to participation for low income children. Also includes buying scripts, music licensing and quality art materials.Rent and MaintenanceWe are located in the ART 634 building where other artists and creative types work.Reserve FundThis is to stabilize our finances by providing a “rainy day savings account” for unexpectedcash flow shortages, expense or losses.OtherInsurance, office supplies, retail, computer, phones.6

ions16%Earned RevenueOur student fees are based on a sliding fee family income scale. We’ve always used thisscale because we believe that all children regardless of their financial means ought to beable to participate in the arts. Revenue is also generated from tickets sales from studentsperformances. We also offer programs for youth like Birthday Parties, summer classes andadult classes which are not based on the fee scale. On site you’ll also find The Best LittleDance Store and a self-serve cafe. Our earned revenue is higher than our peer organizationswhich shows we take sustainability seriously.GrantsGrant awards from local funders show that our organization is well run and respected. All money is local except for Michigan Council for Arts & Cultural Affairs.Local ContributionsWe are proud that individuals and businesses chose to support us. Every dollar isappreciated. Every donation makes an impact. Thank you.No source of funding is guaranteed from year to year.7
