Product Support Guide2015Wide Span ManualOVERVIEWThe wide span storage system is designed for manual storage of light tomedium loads, which makes it ideal in situations where a wide varietyof small components need to be managed. The system is accessedmanually, either at floor level or on elevated walkways. On the highlevels, mechanical tools such as personal lifts, stacker cranes or ordercollecting elevators can be used to lift the operator up to the desiredlevel or deliver the material to a central location. Load levels consist offrames, beams and shelves.58BASIC COMPONENTS1. Column2. Beam13. Foot Plate4. Diagonal Strut5. Horizontal Strut6. Steel Decking47. Particle Board8. Wire Mesh Deck9. Row Spacer10. Product Support Guide2015Wide Span ManualWIDE SPAN FRAMESFrames are the vertical elements of the racks. Theyare rectangular in shape and come in a variety ofheights and depths depending on the needs of thecustomer. Wide span posts share a similar profile tothat of selective bolted posts, with slightly differentpunching.1A standard Interlake Mecalux wide span frameconsists of two U7515 posts connected by a series ofdiagonal struts and includes two DF75 U heavy-dutyfoot plates that are bolted to the bottom of eachpost. Spacing of the diagonals is determined by theheight of the frame. Wide span systems only connectvia bolting, whereas other Interlake Mecalux systemscan be welded together. Wide span frames arepainted standard Mecalux Blue using a cataphoreticpaint process.2BASIC COMPONENTS31. U7515 Frame2. Diagonal Strut3. Horizontal Strut4. Foot Plate44 Wide Span Frames

Product Support Guide2015Wide Span ManualA post refers to a single column of a frame. InterlakeMecalux wide span systems come with one post model. The U7515 post is available in a variety of heights tofit any need. It is made of 16 gauge steel. Wide spanposts are unique in that they come with a special styleof punching for beams and accessories. The wide spanpunch is longer and narrower than the punches on normalInterlake Mecalux selective bolted posts. In addition, twosets of circle punches are on the sides of the columns toallow for accessories to attach. These holes are all evenlyspaced 2” apart.2 1 32”U7515 POST1 15 16”PRODUCT CODE DESCRIPTIONWide span frames are available in a variety of height anddepth combinations. Product Support GuideWide Span ManualSTANDARD FOOT PLATES AND SHIMSDF75 U HEAVY-DUTY FOOT PLATESFrames are secured to the ground using foot plates thatare bolted to the bottom of the posts. The system is thenanchored to the floor. Foot plates also transfer the loadof the system over a larger surface area. For an InterlakeMecalux wide span system, only one foot plate option isavailable. It comes in a galvanized finish. All foot plates come with holes that allow the frame to beanchored into the floor. Each hole is 5/8” in diameter.Foot plates are secured to the frames using W5/16 X 5/8”D933 G2 Z T.2A bolts (T0029096), and to the floor usingAdjustable Anchor Bolts U (T0034138) normally, but MKDM12 Anchor Bolts (T0037345) when the loads are managedusing forklifts or stacker cranes.DF-7 U SHIMSShims (T0032514) are metal plates with the same dimensionsas foot plates. They are placed beneath foot plates to helplevel out frames that are placed on irregular surfaces. Forwide span systems, Interlake Mecalux provides one type ofshim in gauge 11 steel. Product Support Guide2015Wide Span ManualBRACINGM-U BRACINGBracing or struts provide stability and rigidity to a system. Bracing is placed between two posts and is laid outdiagonally or horizontally. Bracing for Interlake Mecalux wide span systems comes in a C shape profile. These profilesare attached to the wide span columns using (2) W5/16 X 1 1/2” D933 Z T.2A bolts (T0029097) on each side. Bracingpatterns are determined by the height of the frame. The struts have an electrogalvanized zinc finish. The first strut typically will be installed horizontally 4” or 6” off the ground to aid in damage reduction. The bracingpattern is based on a typical design. Bracing may need to be adjusted when splicing of a frame occurs.Wide span struts measure 63/64” x 3/4”, with the length being determined by the depth of the frame.Wide Span Bracing Distribution Chart ContinuedB Height (in)C Height (in)D Height (in)E Height 1211410101161061”3/4”8106F Height (in)4FFrame Height (in)12661212120121424”118A Height (in)A1 Height ”24”4”D96” 120”38”44”84” 94”4”www.interlakemecalux.com4” 4”B C6”6”A24”24”H 84”24”4”38”A1H 120”6”Frame Height (in)E FWide Span Bracing Distribution Chart Continued7

Product Support GuideWide Span ManualSPLICINGDF-7 U INTERNAL POST SPLICING (T0032512)Splices are used to extend the height of new or existingframes. Contact your Interlake Mecalux representative formore information on usage and possible limitations. The galvanized splicing piece is 10” long and comes in a Ushaped profile. It has 10 holes, 5 of which are placed every 2”along the sides.(2) Splices are required per frame.DF-7 U SPLICING KIT (T0034172)In order to splice two columns together, a DF-7 U splicing kitis needed. The set comes with the following:(1) DF-7 U Splice (T0032512)(10) W5/16 x 5/8” D933 G2 Z T.2A bolts (T0029096)The splice should be installed before any struts or cross aisleties are added. Splices should be centered, with 5” above and5” below the splice location. Bracing cannot be installed atthe splice location, as diagonals bolt into the side holes thatare occupied by the splicing. Beams only require use of thefront slotting, so those components can be installed at thesplice location.8 Wide Span Frames2015

Product Support Guide2015Wide Span ManualZS-U BEAMS5ZS-U beams in a wide span system have anupper lip that runs vertically with the beam. This provides a space for particle board andinside waterfall wire mesh deck to sit. The lipkeeps the decking in place. 8” and 7 8” optionfor U55 and U65Wide span ZS-U beams come in three differentmodels. The three models come in threedifferent heights. The standard size for thelip on all three models is 7/8”; however, theU55 and U65 can come with a 5/8” model toaccommodate the decking.MS-U BEAMSMS-U beams in a wide span system have anupper lip that lays flush with the beam. Thisallows steel deck and outside waterfall wiremesh deck to sit on the beam. In addition, theMS-U beam can be used as a support beamin instances where a level needs additionalstrength. The design of these styles of deckdoes not require the lip of the ZS-U model inorder for the deck to stay in place.Wide Span Beam HeightModelHeight 6WIDE SPAN HANGAR BEAMSHangar beams are an alternative to the MS-Uand ZS-U beams. Used primarily for hangingclothes, they are made of two end plateswelded onto a long metal tube. For lengths and capacities, contact yourInterlake Mecalux representative.www.interlakemecalux.com13

Product Support GuideWide Span ManualDF-7 U SAFETY PINThe DF-7 U safety pin is a device used to lock thebeam into the frame and prevent it from sliding off. This is the equivalent of the Interlake Mecalux pistonlock system seen on selective systems. One pin isrequired per end plate, meaning that two are requiredper beam. The safety pin is inserted in the holebetween the first and second pins on the end plate.WIDE SPAN END PLATEInterlake Mecalux makes one type of end plate for their widespan beams. This end plate features three pins for locking the endplate into the frame. It also has a hole for the DF-7 U safety pinwhich prevents the beam from dislodging. Each wide span beamcomes with two end plates welded onto it, one on each end.14 Wide Span Beams2015

Product Support GuideWide Span Manual2015DECKINGInterlake Mecalux offers different options for deckingsurfaces to fit whatever the client may need for their widespan system. Decking can be made to custom fit a systemof any length or width. Contact your Interlake Mecaluxrepresentative for more information.WIRE MESH DECKMade of steel wires welded together, wire mesh deck is alight, durable option for the wide span system. It comesin two models: inside waterfall and outside waterfall, andworks with MS-U beams. Wire mesh deck comes with clipsand supports as needed.PARTICLE BOARDParticle board is a lightweight, wood-like flat material thatcomes in one solid piece. It is placed exclusively on ZS-Ubeams inside of the vertical facing lips of the beams. Forheavier loads, crossbars are available.STEEL DECKSteel deck is composed of several steel panels that havetabs to secure their position on the beams. Steel deckis the strongest of the wide span deck options. It worksexclusively on the ZS-U beams.www.interlakemecalux.com15

Product Support GuideWide Span ManualPARTICLE BOARDAThese are formed using particle board (TAM) ofvarying thickness, supplied in standard sizes or bythe square foot. They are fitted onto the beamsand can optionally have a melamine finish onboth faces.BThe thickness of particle board will depend on theload. The particle board can also be reinforcedusing LZSU wood cross-ties.CFor a bay, the real size of the particle board is asfollows:D Length: 19/32” less than that of the bay Depth: 13/64” less than the depth of the bayA. Particle Board Thickness: variable, either 7/8” or 1”B. Z-TAM U ClampWhen using 7/8” particle boards, they willprotrude from the flange on the ZS-U beam by3/64”. This is designed to facilitate the removalof loads without the flange interfering. Whenthicker chipboard or wood cross-ties are used, theboard will protrude by various inches.C. LZSU Wood Cross-TieIt is essential that the customer understands this, since it may seriously impede the manipulationof the product to be stored. Both 1” particleboard and 7/8” particle board with cross-ties willprotrude by approximately 5/32”.D. ZS-U BeamABDLZSU WOOD CROSS-TIESThe LZSU Wood Cross-Tie is manufactured in galvanizedgauge 16 steel. It is shaped to fit into the beams uponwhich the particle board rests. Their use notably improvesthe load capacity of the boards.Cross-ties are used when the load requires them, according to the capacity tables.Z-TAM U CLAMPThe Z-TAM U Clamp is a galvanized metal piece thatclips onto the particle board and fits onto ZS-U beamsgreater than 72” long. The reason for using these is toavoid any accidental separation of the boards during themanipulation of the loads. (T0030662) 2 clamps should be calculated per particle board, andthey are the same for all thicknesses.16 Wide Span Beams2015
