GROWN TOGREATNESSExploring the complexity and diversity ofYakima Valley’s rich cornucopia of wine. All photos this page: Richard Duval ImagesYakima ValleyThe Yakima Valley AVA grows more thanRATTLESNAKEAppellation47 wine grapes varieties. The successHILLSof this diversity can be attributed to themany different growing aspects within theAVA. The micro climates, heat variations,SNIPESMOUNTAINREDand different soil types within the three YakimaMOUNTAINValley sub AVAs — Rattlesnake Hills, Snipes Mountain& Red Mountain — play a major role in successfully growing so many grape varieties.RATTLESNAKE HILLS AVARattlesnake Hills, located around the town of Zillah, is named after the Northern PacificRattlesnake that inhabits the area. Rattlesnake Hills is almost evenly split between red andwhite wine grapes, with reds having a slight edge. Riesling is a dominant white grape in thisregion producing wines with aromas and flavors of lime, lemon, and green apple. Othersites in the appellation offer flavors with a little more stone fruit, particularly peach.SNIPES MOUNTAIN AVASnipes Mountain gets its name from Ben Snipes, a cattle rancher who built a house therein the 1850s. It's the second smallest appellation in Washington with just 820 of the 5,145acres planted in over 30 vinifera varieties. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon the mostplanted. Fruit from this AVA offer unique aromas and flavors which have made it desirablefor winemakers to identify it as a Snipes Mountain-designated wine.RED MOUNTAIN AVAThe Red Mountain AVA is located on the far eastern side of the Yakima Valley. It is thesmallest appellation in Washington state with just 2,227 of the 4,040 vineyard acresplanted. Cheatgrass, a plant that grows naturally in the region, turns bright red in earlyspring giving Red Mountain its name. The nearby Yakima River moderates temperaturesand provides continual airflow, guarding against frost.TCelebrating Our Foundershe Yakima Valley Founders' program commemorates the founders of the Yakima Valleywine industry and its legacy within Washington state. It's an opportunity to celebratethe success of the dream these visionaries had of creating one of the world's most prestigiouswine growing regions. When you see these logos, know that the winemaker or grower involved with the businesshas been active and instrumental in the Yakima Valley wine industry for 25 years or longer.2

WOMENWINEMAKERSMeet the changing face of Yakima Valley Wine Richard Duval ImagesAt its best, wine tends to express feminine qualities. Taste a great wine and youenjoy delicate floral aromas, luscious fruit flavors, elegant textures, and softtannins. There have also been hints, by Yale University scientists, that womenhave a better sense of taste than men. But yet, the industry is dominated by men.Jacki Evans, winemaker for OwenRoe winery in Union Gap, is originallyfrom Austin, Texas. Jacki earned abachelor’s degree at the Universityof Texas with additional wine studiesat Napa Valley College and UC Davis. She is a global harvest hopper with 16harvests around the world, includingAustralia, New Zealand, Austria, NapaValley and Willamette Valley. She'sbeen in the Yakima Valley making wineat Owen Roe Winery since the 2013 vintage and recentlycreated her own brand, Sin Banderas. Kerry Shiels is the winemakerfor Côte Bonneville in Sunnyside.Shiels originally chose engineering asher career of choice. After six yearsof working for Fiat, she realized herheart was in agriculture. She moved toCalifornia and earned a master’s degreein viticulture and enology from UCDavis. She has worked grape harvestsall over the globe. While in Australia, she became enamored with Syrah. Sheexpanded the range of wines showcasing her family’sDuBrul Vineyard, including Syrah in 2010 and Train StationCabernet Sauvignon in 2013.4 Carolina (Cat) Warwickis the co-owner/co-winemaker at WitCellars in Prosser. Cat has worked in thewine industry in the Yakima Valley since2001 when she was pouring wine atApex Cellars. She, too, knew the wineindustry was her calling. She enrolledin the Yakima Valley College Viticultureand Enology program and became thefirst graduate of the program. Cat hasbeen making wine since graduating.Kelly Hightower is the cowinemaker at Hightower Cellars onRed Mountain. Kelly’s love affair withwine began while she was a student atUC Berkeley. While in Berkeley, sheenrolled at Santa Rose CommunityCollege to study viticulture and enology. She couldn’t get enough of this complexbeverage. Unaware of how or whereshe would land, Kelly knew she wouldspend a career in the wine industry. She landed her first job in the accounting department ofColumbia Winery in 1994, met her husband, Tim, andtogether they started Hightower Cellars. Richard Duval Images Winemaker Sarah Fewel co-ownsCultura Wine in Zillah. Sarah immersedherself into the industry by helpingat neighboring wineries and takingclasses to learn the business of wineand winemaking. In 2005, she and herhusband launched their inaugural wines. One wine that sets Cultura apartis Merlot. In 2013, screenplay writerRex Pickett, best known from themovie Sideways, visited the winery. He participated in a blind tasting and raved about theCabernet Sauvignon in his glass. Upon learning the winewas a Merlot, he was convinced it was a joke. Picketrealized the wine in his glass truly captured a sense of place. Richard Duval ImagesHowever, the tide is changing. . .slowly, but it is changing.More women than ever before are entering the wineindustry, be it as a sommelier, viticulturist or winemaker. The Yakima Valley wine industry is part of that change. The following winemakers are breaking stereotypes andlaying the groundwork for future women interested inentering the world of wine. These women are creatingphenomenal wines and playing huge roles for the cominggeneration of women winemakers.
