Corpus Chris Catholic Church4www.corpuschris phx.org- Jen Arnold, M.A. in Theology and Cateche csToday we celebrate the feast of Pentecostand it is, therefore, a good me to reflect ali le on how the Holy Spirit works, both in theChurch, as well as in our own lives.“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom theFather will send in my name, he will teach youall things and bring to your remembrance allthat I have said to you.” -John 14:26God knew that after the resurrection and ascensionof His Son, Jesus, we were going to need some extrahelp. While Jesus physically walked the earth, all anyonehad to do was listen to Him directly to know what Hewilled for them. However, when left to our own devicesfor too long, we humans tend to muck things up. Wereceived the gi of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost inorder to continually guide and advise us on the Father’swill for the Church as a whole and for individuals as well.As I was preparing to write this reflec on, I waslamen ng the fact that my son, and all of his classmates, had to miss receiving their Sacraments of First HolyEucharist and Confirmation due to the Covid-19restrictions in April. Our family, along with many others, were terribly sad as the day came and went. Inacknowledgement of that day, I thought it might beworthwhile to talk a little bit about how the Holy Spiritis at work in us when we receive the Sacrament ofConfirma on.At some point in our history, a little confusiondeveloped about what Confirmation really means. Most of us were likely taught that our Confirma onwas the moment in which we were making the adultdecision to be Catholic. This is not actually what theSacrament is. Sacraments are the means by whichGod communicates His grace and a share in His divinelife with us through the physical world. Confirma on,then, is an outpouring of the gi s of the Holy Spiritinto our souls for our spiritual benefit. That gift isgiven to us regardless of our age or maturity by thevery nature of it being a Sacrament. This means thatConfirma on is a comple on of the gi given to us atour Bap sm. The Catechism clarifies this by saying:Pentecost, by Jean II Restout“Although Confirma on is some mes called the‘sacrament of Christian maturity,’ we must not confuseadult faith with the adult age of natural growth, norforget that the baptismal grace is a grace of free, unmerited election and does not need ‘ra fica on’to become effec ve” (CCCC #1308).While most of us may recall receiving our confirmationat around the age of 16 or so, our diocese here inPhoenix celebrates the Sacraments according towhat’s called “restored order,” or more like how theywere celebrated in the early Church. Early Chris answould receive the three Sacraments of ini a on –Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation – when theyconverted to Christianity, regardless of their age.One of the reasons for this was that they would beempowered with supernatural grace and supernatural gi s that would help them to withstand the greattrials and persecu ons that awaited them as newChristians. So, with this in mind, we have a newperspective on how, through their Confirmation, wecan arm our children at a younger age with what theyneed to endure their own trials in life.As with most of the sacraments, we prepare ourchildren for their Confirma on. The Catechism states:“Prepara on for Confirma on should aim at leadingthe Chris an toward a more in mate union withChrist and a more lively familiarity with the Holy Spirit– his ac ons, his gi s, and his biddings – in order tobe more capable of assuming the apostolic responsibili es of Chris an life” (CCCC #1309). Our childrenbecome very familiar with the gifts of the Holy Spirit –wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord – as well as how to recognizewhen the Holy Spirit is promp ng them to use these

Pentecost Sundaygi s. While this is necessary and equally wonderfulfor our children, how much time do we spend reflectingon what all of this means to the rest of us?The feast of Pentecost is an annual reminder andcelebra on of how the Holy Spirit descended uponthe Apostles and enflamed our Church with His holylove and protec on. However, once a person haspicked his or her special saint and has been sealedwith the gi s of the Holy Spirit, Confirma on tends tobe a Sacrament rarely thought about a erward, muchless celebrated annually. If you recall the storyof the first Pentecost, you’ll rememberthat the Holy Spirit descended uponthe house where the Apostleswere hiding and filled them allwith His Presence (Acts. 2:1-4).What happened after that, though? With their new abilityto speak in other languages, they were compelled to goout and preach to all thepeople, to evangelize. In otherwords, by the presence of theHoly Spirit, they were compelledto action on behalf of God. Similarly, when the Holy Spirit bestowed Hisgifts on us in Confirmation, they weren’tmeant to be something stored away for a rainy day. These are gi s that should compel us to ac on everysingle day, because every single day, the Holy Spirit iswithin us.We talked about medita on a few weeks ago. Agood way to put medita on into prac ce would be tomeditate on each of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.Don’t forget.Jen and her husband, Micha, have their own Catholic ChapletsYouTube channel! You can choose to pray along witheither of them as they lead over40 different chaplets, includingthe Chaplet to the Holy Spirit— perfect for Pentecost!5May 31, 2020Remember the three components of good meditativeprayer: considera on, applica on, and resolu on. So,using for tude as an example, sit with the word“for tude” and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal somedeeper meaning or insight to what it means to beendowed with the gift of supernatural fortitude. AskHim how divine fortitude is different from humanfortitude. Listen to Him and allow Him to teach yousomething new. Then, meditate on how that appliesto you personally in your own life and your owncircumstances. Where have you drawn help fromthe gi of for tude? Where have youstumbled and not relied on that gias much? Finally, make a decisionabout a concrete step you canmake to increase your relianceon the Holy Spirit’s gift offortitude. You can do this foreach gi and find many waysto enrich your spiritual life, grow closer to God, andacknowledge the gifts youreceived from the Holy Spirit atyour Confirma on in new andwonderful ways. Of course, it canbe very overwhelming to do too muchat once, but you could certainly spend amonth at a me with each gi , seeing where theHoly Spirit leads you.Like the Apostles, once the Holy Spirit enters yoursoul, you are compelled to act and not remain stagnant.Let us all be aware of the Holy Spirit within us and allowHim to move us where He wants us so that as Christians,we might set the world ablaze with His love.
