History Aboutthe Green BookThe Green Book was a travelguide intended to help AfricanAmerican who were visiting anunfamiliar place avoid socialobstacles prevalent during theperiod of racial segregation,commonly referred to as JimCrow. The Green Book listedbusinesses that would acceptAfrican American customers.It was published by Victor H.Green.Victor H. Green, a 44-year-oldblack postal carrier in Harlem,relied on his own experiencesand on recommendations from black members of his postalservice union for the inaugural guide bearing his name, TheNegro Motorist Green-Book, in 1937. The 15-page directorycovered Green’s home turf, the New York metropolitan area,listing establishments that welcomed blacks. The power ofthe guide, says Ramsey, also the author of a children’s bookand a play focused on Green-Book history, was that it “created a safety net. If a person could travel by car—and thosewho could, did—they would feel more in control of theirdestiny. The Green-Book was what they needed.”Published by Victor H.
