CongratulationsThe University of Wisconsin Oshkosh is proud of the accomplishments celebrated in today’scommencement ceremony. We recognize and applaud the determination of our graduates tocomplete their studies. We also recognize and appreciate the help families and friends have givento make this graduation possible. While we all would prefer the grandeur of a live, in-personcommencement, we have worked hard to ensure this safe, virtual ceremony commemorates yourresilience and perseverance amid a historic pandemic.The completion of a program of study is significant. It commemorates a major milestone reachedwhile signaling unlimited opportunities for the future. It is in this spirit of hope and optimismthat today we congratulate those who have now completed their studies at the University ofWisconsin Oshkosh.Our newest graduates are an embodiment of a rich tradition of hands-on collaborative learning,academic excellence and personal growth that extends to the date the University was foundedin 1871. It is this tradition that links our newest alumni with prior graduates, who are activelyenriching the civic, business, charitable and political sectors of our global community.As a regional center for the celebration and promotion of knowledge, culture and innovation, ourUniversity is an integral part of the broader community. The OshkoshState Normal School became Wisconsin’s foremostteacher-training institution.In later years, as the focus and curriculum expanded,the institution underwent several name changes.A graduate school was added in 1963. In its centennialyear of 1971, President Roger Earl Guiles guidedUW Oshkosh’s merger into the Wisconsin system.Today, with three Fox Valley campuses nestled inthe cities of Fond du Lac, Menasha and Oshkosh,UW Oshkosh prepares students for fulfilling lives andchallenging careers with 70 undergraduate majorsand 48 master’s degree, certificate and doctoralprograms spanning a wide array of disciplines.Chancellor Andrew J. Leavitt leads this vibranteducational institution under a strategic plan witha focus on student success. The board, in turn, appoints the systempresident and the chancellors of the 13 universities. Thecurrent interim system president is Tommy G. Academic ProcessionThis commencement ceremony marks a special occasionfor students completing degree programs offered by UWOshkosh. The Chancellor grants degrees by virtue of thepowers vested by the UW System’s Board of Regents. Inaddition, academic degrees may only be granted uponthe recommendation of the University’s faculty.The academic procession is a featured part of thecommencement program—a symbolic declaration thatall members of the academic community are bound bycommon purpose and shared commitment to the idealsof higher education, including the search for meaning,truth and understanding.Academic AttireThe colors and apparel worn in the processional aresymbolic of the Middle Ages. Because universitiesdeveloped from church schools, both faculty and studentswere regarded as part of the clergy and wore clericalclothing based on monastic dress.The traditional hat developed from the skull cap worn incold weather. In Europe, a bonnet with a tassel is still worn,but in America it has been replaced by the mortarboardcap or tam with tassel.The bachelor’s gown, with its long, pointed sleeves,is worn closed. The master’s gown has an oblongsleeve open at the wrist; the rear section is square cut.The doctoral gown often was furred, a decoration thatsurvives today as the velvet on the front and sleeves.Graduate degree gowns may be worn open or closed.The tassel colors seen in the processional correspondto the field of study: crimson, Bachelor of Liberal Studies andBachelor of Applied Studies; drab (tan), Bachelor of BusinessAdministration; light blue, Bachelor of Music Education,Bachelor of Science in Education and Bachelor of Science–Human Services; gold, Bachelor of Science; white,Bachelor of Arts; brown, Bachelor of Fine Arts; pink, Bachelorof Music; citron, Bachelor of Social Work; and apricot,6Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Theword “learning” is centered at the bottom, serving asthe foundation of the University’s mission. The stylizedfigure at the center forms the school’s initials. The outwardsweeping W reflects the Wisconsin Idea—educationreaching to the state’s boundaries. The date of theUniversity’s founding appears at the bottom, representingthe importance of those who came before us.7

Guest SpeakerDR.JOHNNEWMANPRESIDENT, AURORA MEDICAL CENTER OSHKOSH ANDCHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER, OSHKOSH/FOND DU LAC PATIENTSERVICE AREADr. John Newman has more than 25 years of experience in the field of medicine and surgery. Prior to joining Aurora,Dr. Newman spent nine years with Sentara Healthcare in Norfolk, Virginia. Since joining Aurora in April 2015, hisaccomplishments include recognition among the Truven Health Analytics Top 100 Hospitals and five stars fromthe Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Dr. Newman also had a distinguished military career of 17 years,including three tours of duty in Iraq.Dr. Newman has worked with UW Oshkosh and the community of Oshkosh since early this year, helping theUniversity and a coalition of partners develop robust plans and a coordinated response to contain COVID-19.His support of the UWO Recovery Task Force, helping UWO leaders address health and safety issues particularto a university setting, along with most impactful practices to reduce transmission, was critical to thedevelopment of the institution’s fall Titans Return plan.Student SpeakerSYDNEYDEVIT TSydney Devitt of Crystal Lake, Illinois, graduates cum laude with a bachelor of artswith majors in political science and international studies. Outside the classroom,Devitt helped UW Oshkosh continue its tradition of success by serving as arepresentative on the award-winning UWO Model United Nations team.Devitt was awarded a Chancellor’s Award of Excellence in recognition of heroutstanding leadership as a peer mentor for the University Studies Program,a member of Oshkosh Circle K and vice president of the Oshkosh StudentAssociation. Beyond her campus involvement, Devitt has a passion toincrease youth voter engagement in a nonpartisan way. She internedfor two members of congress and served as an election engagementintern on campus. Devitt plans to pursue a career in politicalservice with dreams of one day serving in Congress.1011
