1st Vice President – DeanKatie Burnham“The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team” -- Phil JacksonBasketball coach Phil Jackson understood that there’s a mutually beneficial relationship between teamsand team members. As I have watched the committees work this year to accomplish their projects, I have thought about howthis gets done. The club has as its operating system, committees. Nothing happens in a committee unlessthe committee votes to do it. Nothing happens unless someone steps forward to lead the project. Andthen, like a wand was waved, members step forward to participate in making it happen. Each membermakes a contribution in some way to the project’s success. Each team member offers what they can and inthe end the goal is reached.Where does this sense of “can do” come from? Much of it comes from feeling that with a team ofmembers we can accomplish our goals. We don’t question their commitment to the project. The effortgives us a sense of strength and purpose. We want to do our part. We want to accomplish the goal. And inthe end, we are enriched by our team. We have a purpose. We can depend on each other. And we have thecomfort of the shared experience. And, the shared accomplishment. On October 1, the club took the formidable step of launching the Go Fund Me campaign. We have anaudacious goal of raising money for our scholarships, not by selling something but by inspiringsomething. Our campaign theme is: “Help Them Dream Big”!The theme is so fitting, not just for the campaign but for our club. We are dreaming big! We are lookingto each other as members of the same team. We all can do our part. And, each part matters just like inHome Tour. Yes, the campaign wants to raise money, but the real glue is we all want young scholars toachieve their dreams of an education. We are an equal opportunity scholarship club! And every dollar weraise represents our shared belief that investing in education is one of our life priorities. In the months ahead, I know each member will work to make the campaign a success, just as in HomeTour. We will see where we can make a contribution: sending cards, calling friends, asking businesses tohelp, and donating money. This is new territory for the club. A change from years of Home Tour. I alsoknow that 100% of our team will work to make the Help Then Dream Big campaign achieve its goal. Iknow, because we know how to Dream Big!Communications and Public RelationsPatti CastilloYou are probably wondering why congratulations are in order.TVWC’s Help Them Dream Big scholarship campaign is up and running for one. At the time of thiswriting we have reached 25% of our goal of 35,000! So we have much to celebrate but we’re not doneyet. In order to be a success, we need all our members to share the news of the fundraiser. As you mayknow, the fundraiser postcards are available for members to share with family, friends and businesses youmay frequent. Jean Lash, Pat Farmer, Carol Rosingana and Kim O’Brien have graciously volunteered todistribute cards to members from their home. Please contact them to pick up your cards. In the event youare unable to pick up your cards, please contact Barb Purdy and a card delivery can be arranged.Since the official start of our fundraiser, (October 1st) we’ve been working to reach a bigger audience byposting news of TVWC’s wonderful members and our amazing contributions to the community on social

media The more followers we have on social media, the bigger audience we have to spread the news ofour Help Them Dram Big scholarship fundraiser. Meeting the author of that book, of course! Books forLunch ZOOM meeting of October 1st included a question and answer session with T. Jefferson Parker, the author of The Last Good Guy. An author of 27 books, Jeff related how his background as a reporter& a number of unrelated to writing jobs helped him survive until he became established as a writer. Heuses some of those experiences in his books. He lives in Fallbrook and many references included in thisbook were recognizable or known locations either in Fallbrook or the beach cities north of San Diego.November 5th’ selection takes a decided turn in subject matter and was written by Colson Whitehead. Itis based on a real story. The N.Y Times states “the writer challenges the complacent assumption that weeven fathom what happened in our past & it has rarely seemed more essential”. This author wrote ourJanuary selection also. Be prepared to discuss the unique writing style of this author. Covid 19 changedthe lifestyle of almost everyone which possibly allowed more time for reading (I hope). Be sure to sendyou nominations for the 2021 booklist to Susan Elliott ASAP. susanaelliott@verizon.netNov. 5th 10:30 amDec. 3rd 10:00 amThe Nickel BoysWhere the Crawdads SingColson WhiteheadDelia OwensRemember the different starting time for the December meeting – stay tuned for information about bookexchange and meeting location in December.Conservation AdvocatesMichelle BruscaHere we are in November with the year quickly closing in on our committee. Observing heron, eagles, and other water fowl is an incredible way to spend a morning. Members birdwatched and lazily drifted on Lake Skinner on a beautiful Monday morning. We took in the clear air, exercised and shared animal sightings and later sat an enjoyed a picnic lunch reminiscing about ourmorning. The day was an inspiring reminder of why we commit to the health and beauty of our Earth.Margaret, our tour guide for the day did it again, another wonderful, educational event in the greatoutdoors. Let’s hope that sometime next year a sense ofnormalcy returns to all of our lives. On October 15, the Arts and Culture movie club met and discussed the film “On the Basis ofSex,” about Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her extraordinary life and career. The movie clubwill meet again on November 19 to discuss another film. Contact me attishypacbell@verizon.net if you’d like to join us. SB 1276which made it easier for a domestic violence shelter to qualify for state grantfunding. If you are aware of or suspect domestic violence, please visit the National Domestic ViolenceHotline (thehotline.org) or call 1-800-799-SAFE.
