2Purdue University Global 2019 CommencementCOMMENCEMENT SPEAKERDENNIS E. BLAND, JDPresident, Center for Leadership DevelopmentMr. Dennis E. Bland is president of the Center for Leadership Development (CLD),an Indianapolis non-profit organization dedicated to empowering African Americanyouth to achieve the highest academic, college and career success. Founded in 1977,CLD offers fifteen curriculum based youth development experiences as well as theunique College Prep Institute, which help prepare over 6,000 youth and parents peryear. Prior to joining CLD, Mr. Bland practiced law for nine years, specializing inmedical malpractice litigation and insurance law.In 2004, Mr. Bland was appointed to the Indiana Commission for HigherEducation and was reappointed to the Commission in 2008 by Governor MitchDaniels. Mr. Bland was then elected to serve as Chairman of the Commission in 2014. Additionally, in 2007,Mr. Bland was appointed by Governor Mitch Daniels to serve on the Indiana Education Roundtable. He alsocurrently serves on the Citizens Energy Group board of trustees and on the executive committee of the IndianaEducation Alliance.Among his distinguished awards, Mr. Bland has received the President’s Medal of Distinction from Ball StateUniversity, the Distinguished Alumni Service Award from DePauw University, the Distinguished Alumni Awardfrom Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis, and the Distinguished Alumni Award from Broad RippleHigh School, where he graduated. In 2014, Mr. Bland was presented with an honorary degree, the Doctorate ofHuman Letters, from Indiana Wesleyan University and in 2015 was awarded an honorary degree from MarianUniversity. In 2016 Mr. Bland was awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash signed by Governor Mike Pence.Mr. Bland earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from DePauw University and a juris doctorate (JD) from theIndiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law in Indianapolis. A native of Indianapolis, he is a memberof Christ Temple Apostolic Church where he serves as a deacon, trustee, and eighth grade Sunday school teacher.

15THE MACEThe mace was originally a medieval weapon that was carried by bishops of the church into battle as a protectivedevice. After more than 900 years, a ceremonial mace continues to be designed in a shape similar to a club, whichcommemorates its very early use.In later times, the mace was carried by sergeants-at-arms who were bodyguards of kings and others of high rank.Both Richard I of England and Phillip II of France ordered their sergeant-at-arms to carry a ceremonialmace. Legislative bodies such as the English Parliament also adopted the ceremonial mace as part of the pompand circumstance associated with opening the meeting of the body.As universities developed during this same period, they too adopted the mace for use in academic processions.Today, the mace is carried by the Macebearer who leads the platform party, which includes the UniversityPresident and other dignitaries, onto the stage for the graduation ceremony.Throughout history, special craftsmen were presented with the task of decorating the mace so it carefullyembodied the history, traditions, and symbols of the academic institution.
