There are awards both from a panel of judges and thepeoples’ choice, who will choose from a dazzling display of artisticcreations that truly will amaze and transcend what one might think ofas being possible with sand and water. All three days will feature live musical entertainment, food trucks, specialty food vendors (as well as Revere’s Beach’s own iconic establishments!), exhibitors, and amusement rides that will provide fun forthe entire family starting at 10:00 a.m. each day.A spectacular fireworks display will be the climactic event of Saturday evening’s festivities at 9:00 p.m.It is estimated that with the good weather that is being predicted forthe weekend (as we are writing this, sunny and hot is the forecast forall three days), up to one million visitors will journey to Revere Beachto partake of this truly unique event.Needless to say, the best means for getting to the festival will bevia the MBTA. The Blue Line will bring festival-goers to the Revere Beach and Wonderland stops, which are just a short walk (literally a few minutes) to the sands of Revere Beach itself. In addition, free parking and shuttle service to the T will be available at SuffolkDowns. As always, the Sand Sculpting Festival, which is spearheaded bythe Revere Beach Partnership in cooperation with the City of Revereand the DCR, is free-of-charge.We urge all of our readers to make the trek to Revere Beach, ournation’s first public beach, this weekend with their friends and familyto partake in the fun of this unique event that will create memoriesthat will last a lifetime.T he L ynn J o u r n a lPRESIDENT: Stephen QuigleyEDITOR IN CHIEF: Cary Shuman cary@lynnjournal.comPHONE 781-485-0588 // FAX 781-485-1403Email:editor@lynnjournal.comWeb Site: www.lynnjournal.comDIRECTORYAdvertising & MarketingDirector of MarketingDebra DiGregorio(deb@reverejournal.com)Assistant Marketing DirectorsMaureen DiBellaLegal AdvertisingEllen BertinoBusiness Accounts ExecutiveJudy RussiEditorialPage Design, Copy EditingScott YatesReporting StaffCary ShumanJohn LyndsPrinterGateHouse MediaGuest Op-EdBrittney Griner – Let’s all stay out of RussiaDr. Glenn MolletteBrittney Griner is an American basketball star on trial in acourtroom outside of Moscow. She is a prisoner of Russia and isfacing a possible prison sentenceon drug charges.Griner recently pled guilty after Russian authorities accusedher of having a vape cartridgewith hashish oil in her luggage atan airport near Moscow on February 17, 2022. The guilty pleacould potentially accelerate hercase’s conclusion, clearing a pathfor either a deal with the UnitedStates to free her or, perhaps, arequest for clemency. The harshest outcome couldbe a 10-year sentence in a Russian penal colony despite thecontention by Griner’s lawyersthat she packed the smoking cartridges by mistake.Brittney Griner is an American professional basketball player for the Phoenix Mercury of theWomen’s National BasketballAssociation, WNBA.  She playedCollege basketball for the BaylorLady Bears in Waco Texas. Sheis the only NCAA basketballplayer to both score 2,000 pointsand block 500 shots. In 2012,the three-time All American wasnamed the AP Player of the Yearand the Most Outstanding Playerof the Final Four.In 2009, Griner was named thenation’s No. 1 high school women’s basketball player by Rivals.com.   In 2013, Griner signed anendorsement deal with Nike. Shehad been entering Russia to playwith the Russia Premier Leagueduring the WNBA offseason. Her trial began on July 1, and shepled guilty to the charges.Paul Whelan is another American citizen currently held as aprisoner in Russia. On June 15,2020 he received a 16-year prison sentence with the possibilityof time in a labor camp. He isdescribed as a corporate securitydirector. There is conversation that aprisoner swap could be a possibility for freeing Griner andWhelan. Most Americans are notexcited about releasing a dangerous criminal. However, we areprayerful that something will beworked out for Griner and Whelan’s release.I would hope all Americansmight consider staying out ofRussia. They latch ontopeople, pets and even clothing, and often evade detection due totheir minuscule size.To maximize a tick-unfriendlyenvironment in your backyard, the following are suggested: Keep your lawn mowed, withno more than 2 inches of growth. Don’t place playsets/picnictables closer than 3 feet fromwooded areas. Create a 3-footbuffer zone between picnic table and play areas, consisting ofgravel, mulch, and wood chips. Keep leaves raked and doregular weeding around trees andshrubs. Trim plants, shrubs, andbushes to allow more sunlightinto the depths of the plant. Ticksdon’t like dry, sunny areas. Make your yard tick-hosthostile: ensure that mice and rodents do not have woodpiles orstone walls where they can setup housekeeping. Ticks love toattach to rodents. Move any bird feeders orbird baths as far from the houseas possible. Birds are lovely tolook at, but immature ticks hitchrides on them. Use binoculars towatch the birds from afar. For more information, followthe links s/avoid/in the yard.html).I won’t attempt an exhaustivelist of all the tick-borne illnesses. However, the black-legged (deer)tick carries Lyme disease. All thetick-borne illnesses have common symptoms: fever, headache, fatigue, muscle aches. Since allthose symptoms can be linked toany number of ailments, it is bestto see your healthcare provider. He or she can evaluate if thesymptoms are tick ases-spread-byticks).Please see Op-Ed Page 3

Thursday, July 21, 2022Allen CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1upbringing in the city.“I loved having my friends inLynn, especially when I got tohigh school and had the supportnetwork that the teachers gave totheir students – I thought it wasincredible,” said Allen. “I’m stillin touch with my media teacher,Don Hussey. He attended mywedding and came to the Statehouse and took photos when Iwas first sworn in as state representative. I made lifelong connections at Tech, and the teachersat the school are amazing. Mr.Hussey is an incredible educator.”After high school, Allen received her certification as a licensed practical nurse LPN.Leah is married to Ryan Allen,a union elevator mechanic. Theyhave two young children.Winning electionas state representativeAt the age of 24, Leah ColeAllen decided to run for staterepresentative in a special election in Peabody.Allen stunned the political es-tablishment by defeating a sittingschool committee member andcity councilor in the election.“I think it was that I’m reallyjust a regular person and at thattime, I was talking about thefact that the state was wastingall kinds of money,” said Allen.“There were reports that thestate couldn’t account for fundsin different state departments.Then-Governor Deval Patrickproposed the biggest tax increasein the history of Massachusetts, and I thought, ‘hey, wait a minute, I’m working at a nursinghome, doing 16-hour shifts trying to pay off my student and carloans – I don’t want to pay anymore taxes. Just talking aboutthat resonated with a lot of people and that’s what brought meback into politics. I saw things inthis state that I thought we coulddo better’.’’Allen was re-elected to the position in 2014 before deciding tostep down from the House andreturn to school and finish herRN degree requirements.Op-Ed CONTINUED FROM PAGE 2How should one prepare to gooutside during tick season? It’snot welcome news to hear “wearlong sleeves and long pants”during summer weather. However, there are precautions (andcompromises) one can makewhen venturing forth into thegreat outdoors: Wear light-colored clothing,on which ticks are more visible. Wear long-sleeved shirts andpants, with white socks pulled upover the pants bottoms (bad forfashionistas, good for tick avoidance). Treat clothing with the chemical permethrin (EPA approvedfor tick repellant, on clothingonly). For any repellent, alwaysread product labels before applying, to ensure proper use andeffectiveness. When returning from your outside excursion, check your bodyfor ticks. Check children and petsas well. Ticks gravitate to areasof the body that are warm anddark, such as in or around hair, belly buttons, ears, underarms, groins, waists, etc. Talk to yourvet about tick prevention products for your f you follow all the aboveinstructions, and you find a tickPage 3T H E LY N N J O U R N A Lwith its jaws attached to yourflesh anyway, don’t panic. Thereare a few things to rememberwhen removing a tick.Don’t coat it with petroleumjelly or touch a recently blownout match head to its body. Tickshave delicate nervous systems, and when stressed by suffocation from Vaseline or barbecueby matchhead, the critters reactby regurgitating their saliva intoyour bloodstream. This is in effect the tick vaccinating you withany number of tick-borne diseases. This is to be avoided. The correct way to remove atick, from either yourself, a child,or your pet: Get clean tweezers. Grab hold of the tick as closeto the skin as possible. Pull straight up, slowly, andsteadily. Twisting will behead thetick with his jaws still under yourskin.
