Cantu, MDNeurosurgeonChair of the Department of SurgeryService Chief of NeurosurgeryChairman of the Sports Medicine Committee Emerson HospitalRobert Cantu, MD is the Chief of Neurosurgery, Chairman of the Department of Surgery, and Director of Sports Medicine at Emerson Hospital in Concord,Massachusetts. He also serves as a Clinical Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery, Boston University School of Medicine; Adjunct professor Exercise and SportScience, University North Carolina; Medical Director National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research, University of North Carolina; Co-Director, NeurologicSports Injury Center, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, Neurosurgical Consultant Boston Eagles football team and Boston Cannons professional soccer team.He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of California Berkley, his master’s degree in endocrinology in 1962, and in 1963, his medical degreefrom the University of California Medical School in San Francisco. He completed his surgical internship at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital in New York Cityand a neurosurgery residency at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, in addition to a simultaneous position of research fellow in physiology at HarvardMedical School.Dr. Cantu has been actively involved with the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), serving as President and as Treasurer. In 1996, he was awardedthe ACSM’s Citation Award. This year, Dr. Cantu gave the J.B. Dill Lecture on the History of Concussions at ACSMs annual meeting in New Orleans. He has also beeninvolved with the NFL and Roger Goddell regarding concussions and management guidelines. In addition, Dr. Cantu has served as the ACSM spokesperson regardingNASCAR deaths and safety issues, the consultant for NOCSAE to the NFL Concussion Committee and Co-Chairman for the NASCAR Safety Task Force.Dr. Cantu has authored over 300 scientific publications, including 21 books on neurology and sports medicine, in addition to numerous book chapters, peerreviewed papers, abstracts and free communications, and educational videos. He has served as a consultant to many scholastic and professional athletes on thereturn to collision sports after a head injury or spine injury, and is active speaking on a variety of health-related interests including the overall benefits of moderateregular exercise; the special health and exercise concerns of senior citizens; and sports safety issues with high school athletic trainers, coaches, students and parents.Christopher M. Powers, PhD, PTPhysical TherapistCo-Director of Musculoskeletal Biomechanics Research Lab University of Southern CaliforniaChristopher M. Powers, PhD, PT is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biokinesiology & Physical Therapy, and Co-Director of the MBRL atUSC. He also has joint appointments in the Departments of Radiology and Orthopaedic Surgery within the Keck School of Medicine. His primary teachingresponsibilities include the areas of biomechanics and the mechanics of human gait. He received a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from the UC-SantaBarbara in 1984, his master’s degree in Physical Therapy from Columbia University in 1987, and a doctorate degree in Biokinesiology in 1996 from USC. Dr.Powers completed his post-doctoral training at the Orthopaedic Biomechanics Laboratory, UC-Irvine.Dr. Powers studies the biomechanical aspects of human movement. More specifically, his research and publications are concerned with the kinematic,kinetic and muscular actions associated with human movement, the pathomechanics of orthopedic disabilities and issues related to rehabilitation of themusculoskeletal system. He has published over 70 peer-reviewed articles and 120 abstracts and has received several research awards from the AmericanPhysical Therapy Association, including the Rose Excellence in Research Award from the Orthopaedic Section, the Eugene Michels New Investigator Award, theDorothy Briggs Scientific Inquiry Award and the Helen J. Hislop Award for contributions to the professional literature.Dr. Powers is on several editorial boards including the Journal of Applied Biomechanics, Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy, PhysicalTherapy, Foot & Ankle International, and the Journal of Athletic Training. He is an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association, serving as VicePresident of the California Chapter and President-elect of the Section on Research.Michael W. Collins, PhDNeuropsychologistAssistant Director of the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion ProgramChief Clinical Officer of ImPACT Applications, Inc.University of Pittsburgh Medical CenterMichael (Micky) Collins, PhD, a nationally renowned sports concussion clinician and researcher, joined the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Programas assistant director when the program was established in September, 2000. He received his bachelor’s degree in psychology and biology at the University ofSouthern Maine in 1991, his master’s degree in psychology at Michigan State University in 1995, and his doctorate degree in clinical psychology at MichiganState in 1998. He subsequently completed a clinical neuropsychology internship at the University of Florida and a neuropsychology fellowship at the Henry FordHealth System in Detroit.In 1999, Dr. Collins authored two major multi-site studies involving the effects of concussion and return-to-play evaluation methods. These studieswere published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). Dr. Collins continues to administer and oversee clinical programs for concussionmanagement for sports teams at several major colleges, universities, and high schools throughout the country. He is a clinical consultant to the PittsburghSteelers, NFL Europa, Major League Baseball, USA Lacrosse, USA Rugby, and to several high school, collegiate, and professional sports organizations bothnationally and internationally.He has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles in sports medicine and other medical journals and is a frequently invited presenter on the topic of sportsconcussions at national and international meetings. He has co-authored a sports concussion textbook and is a reviewer for JAMA, Neurosurgery, Pediatrics,American Journal of Sports Medicine, as well as on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Athletic Training Association.2 Symposium 2009

He has had a wealth of valuableexperiences in different clinical sports medicine settings. He hasworked with Resurgens Orthopedics (Atlanta, GA), and the GeorgiaTech volleyball team. He has also served as a faculty member and ateam physician at the University of Maryland and the University ofSouth Carolina - Columbia. Dr. Terrell has worked with the University ofMaryland in College Park and Baltimore County, Coppin State College,and the Baltimore Ravens NFL team. One of his career highlights wasspending two weeks at Lake Placid, NY in the US Olympic CommitteePhysician Volunteer program in 1999, complementing his previouswork at the 1996 Olympic Games Polyclinic.Dr. Terrell studied at the University of Cambridge in Englandobtaining a Master of Philosophy in Biological Anthropology. Cardiomyopathy Center at Tufts Medical Center. Dr. Link received his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, MA. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, New York, NY and fellowships in Cardiology and Cardiac Electrophysiology at Tufts University/New England Medical Center .
